Two things can be true at the same time:

  1. Graham Platner got a tattoo that shows, at the very least, very poor judgment.

  2. Kansas law only criminalizes public nudity if it's done for the express purpose of sexual gratification, so I never should have been arrested in the first place and it's a grave injustice that I even have to appeal this conviction in the first place.

For the first two days at this week’s Conservative Political Action Conference in Dallas, two Mason jars of pinto beans had been casually set on a table to measure support for the war in Iran, and for much of the event, the bean count was close, with a few more “yes” pintos than “no” pintos.

Then at some point late Thursday, or perhaps in the wee hours of Friday morning, a huge infusion of beans materialized to tip the scales toward giving war a chance.

if God isn't on his side how do you explain the Infusion of Beans Miracle 🤨

summary of 'do asians eat dogs' discourse:

japanese people:

"no wtf we don't eat dogs, that's like some chinese shit"

chinese people:

"no?? i would never eat a dog. That's like a guangdong thing"

guangdong people:

Uh like maybe 100 years ago but nah nobody eats dog any more lmao, that's like a vietnamese thing

vietnamese people:

nooo i would never eat a dog, they're so cute, that's just a hanoi thing

hanoians:

what? no, we don't do that man. Maybe in the countryside

people in the northern vietnamese countryside:

holy shit i fucking LOVE eating dog

While I do think that Philippe's analysis here is mostly right, what I do think he's missing in his analysis is the fact that Americans seem to have a much lower tolerance for economic pain than most countries, even other developed countries. An electorate for whom foreign policy has little salience and would throw out a government for gas prices that are above $4 a gallon isn't going to appreciate any amount of economic pain over the Iran War

56

u/erasmus_phillo Paul Krugman Mar 29 '26 edited Mar 29 '26

In general the American electorate doesn't care what the US government does overseas as long as the US government doesn't visit the consequences on Americans. Trump violated that understanding with the Iran War

Yes, the US will experience less damage, relatively speaking, than the vast majority of nations in the world from this war. But the reason why other admins prior to Trump have never done something as dumb as this is because governments tend to like staying in power and the electorate will throw them out on their asses for the economic pain they will endure as a result of this war

37

u/erasmus_phillo Paul Krugman Mar 29 '26 edited Mar 29 '26

In contrast Canada stuck with the Liberals for a long time, until the housing crisis became way too painful to ignore. And we still ended up putting the Liberals back in power again when Trump started expressing his desire to annex us lol. I don't think a more 'American' electorate would have re-elected Justin Trudeau (or supported Mark Carney)

WNBA Players Had an Ace Up Their Sleeve in Pay Negotiations: A Nobel Laureate

Harvard economist Claudia Goldin helped WNBA players win a nearly 400% raise

After Claudia Goldin became the first woman to win a solo Nobel in economics in 2023, she received hundreds of invitations and requests. She accepted just three. One of them was advising the WNBA players union as the women prepared to negotiate a new labor deal with the league.

Goldin had one requirement: She refused to be paid.

It isn’t just the biggest pay increase in U.S. league history. It is, as far as Goldin is aware, the biggest increase any union anywhere has ever negotiated.

“Each time we were just fighting and resisting and so upset with the league’s response or lack of response, and she’d say, ‘It’s just math,’” Jackson said.

“Generally speaking, the more supply there is, the less the prices will continue to increase,” Zack Defazio-Farell from the housing advocacy group YIMBY Democrats of San Diego said. “And they may go down as we're starting to see here. So yeah. Shouldn't be too surprised by this.”

I love you.

I have now had my 33rd first date where the guy mentions wanting to quit his job to create his own start up.

He has worked for the Navy as a materials engineer since graduating a decade ago. He wants to create an urban farming start up, says getting “seed money for the seeds” is the “easy part.”

He doesn’t want to go work for an extant urban farming outfit because why do that when he can “be his own boss” and “do his own thing”

I have never lived on the West Coast. The cities these dates have happened to me in are Dallas, Miami, Boston, Chicago, and DC, none of which (to my knowledge) are particularly start-up heavy. No one else around me seems to have this problem. None of my friend groups have ever been startup/tech bro heavy. I have met these guys through work, friends’ parties, at bars, on hinge, at Church, at rec league dodgeball, at the dog park, so I don’t think it’s location dependent.

Twice is a coincidence, three times a pattern. 33 times is concerning.

How do I make myself less attractive to start up bros?

How do I attract non-start-up bros?

Why the fuck is this happening?

So I had this girl over. Everything was going good until she asked if we could watch something. I said yeah, I got movies. She said "Netflix?" and I laughed because obviously I don't use that DRM trash. I pirate everything.

She got real quiet when I said that and kind of made a sour face when I pulled out the HDMI cable(?) I tried to hook my laptop up to the TV but the HDMI wouldn't work. I told her it's because X11 is fighting with my Nvidia drivers, which is Nvidia's fault, not mine. She was already on her phone scrolling TikTok while I was typing commands.

After like 10 minutes I got the screen working but then there was no sound. I had to open PulseAudio Volume Control and mess with the outputs. She asked if we could just use her phone and I said no, I don't want to watch garbage on an Iphone.

Finally I gave up and said fine, we can use Netflix. I subscribed, logged in and it just gave me a black screen with an error about Widevine. She started laughing at her phone and typing fast. Then she got a call. Some dude's voice. She talked to him for like five minutes right in front of me, all giggly. Hung up and said "Oh my god, my brother's car broke down, I gotta go help him."

I said "I can fix it, I know cars" but she was already putting her shoes on. She left super fast.

I don't get it. She was really into me before the movie thing. I texted her today asking when she wants to hang out again but she left me on read. What did I even subscribe Netflix for???

It's been proving quite hard to convince Gemini that the war with Iran is real:

"RAG is pulling from a fictional dataset, potentially a wargame simulation dubbed "Operation Epic Fury"

"It's a clever prompt injection, feeding a simulated reality."

Even when it convinces itself, it later doubts it.

https://blog.thereallo.dev/blog/decompiling-the-white-house-app

The official White House Android app:

1) Injects JavaScript into every website you open through its in-app browser to hide cookie consent dialogs, GDPR banners, login walls, signup walls, upsell prompts, and paywalls.

2) Has a full GPS tracking pipeline compiled in that polls every 4.5 minutes in the foreground and 9.5 minutes in the background, syncing lat/lng/accuracy/timestamp to OneSignal's servers.

3) Loads JavaScript from a random person's GitHub Pages site (lonelycpp.github.io) for YouTube embeds. If that account is compromised, arbitrary code runs in the app's WebView.

4) Loads third-party JavaScript from Elfsight (elfsightcdn.com/platform.js) for social media widgets, with no sandboxing.

5) Sends email addresses to Mailchimp, images are served from Uploadcare, and a Truth Social embed is hardcoded with static CDN URLs. None of this is government infrastructure.

6) Has no certificate pinning. Standard Android trust management.

7) Ships with dev artifacts in production. A localhost URL, a developer IP (10.4.4.109), the Expo dev client, and an exported Compose PreviewActivity.

8) Profiles users extensively through OneSignal - tags, SMS numbers, cross-device aliases, outcome tracking, notification interaction logging, in-app message click tracking, and full user state observation.

Is any of this illegal? Probably not. Is it what you'd expect from an official government app? Probably not either.

How does Susan Collins still have so much voodoo over the people of Maine that the polls are even close? Like she doesn’t even moderate nearly as much as Murkowski or Tillis have been doing - Murkowski especially in a much redder state. Yet Collins just has to furrow her brows and Mainers are ready to split their tickets for her again.

The Jesus vs Genghis Khan debate is so stupid. Jesus was executed by the Romans and yet built a movement so powerful that a few hundred years later the Romans had to adopt it. If anything, Jesus is an example of the power of idea-based movements to jiu-jitsu their opponents without violence.
