The washed up pilot isn’t even retired, he should’ve retired a long time ago but he’s able to stay in due to his connections with fellow boomers in charge, even when he deliberately made a reckless mistake and crashed a multibillion dollar experimental plane.

Pretty sure Luke wasn't inexperienced. He used to bullseye womprats in is T-16 after all. Maybe not exactly battle-hardened though.
