Learning about the Underground Railroad (famously neither underground nor a railroad) was a confusing experience as a young student in an era where underground railroads were a real thing.

There I was thinking that people escaping slavery were taking the subway to the North and getting confused why they had to keep getting off to sleep under peoples’ floorboards
