Advice Wanted newborn keeps having leaks

pic for reference

with most diapers i’ve tried he keeps having leaks from the top when the rest of the diaper is dry. for reference, these are huggies snug and dry, but it’s with multiple different ones that worked for my first son.

for my baby shower i asked solely for rascals because those worked for my first son the best and now i have so many boxes that i cant use because they leak like this.

for reference the only diapers that didnt leak were luvs and parents choice surprisingly. all huggies brand do this and rascals/millie moon

do you breast feed? i noticed that was happening to my 4 month old until i realized the boob i wasnt using while feeding him would leak onto him and always left a wet spot lol

31

u/WobbyBobby Apr 13 '26

This is a great pro tip! 😂😂😅

11

u/Successful-Search541 Apr 13 '26

I also took a very long time to realize that the boob I wasn’t feeding with was capable of (and often was) leaking. 🫠🫠🫠

This used to happen to me too!

10

u/TernEnthusiast Apr 13 '26

Lmfaooo yeah this is such a good point. This took me forever to realize 😂

3

u/fauxdawnpastdusk Apr 13 '26

looking forward to my milk collectors! tired of both of us being wet

2

u/desiladygamer84 Apr 16 '26

I just used use the cloth breast pads but then I just started shoving a burp cloth under my top.

I know this may be a silly question since you said your first is a boy as well, so you probably already know, but are you checking if the boy's penis is facing straight down when putting on the diaper?

26

u/CalligrapherDue7898 Apr 13 '26

yes! had this issue with my first, it’s always facing down now.

9

u/PlanMagnet38 Apr 13 '26

I’ve also tried having the penis pointed up but tucking the top of the diaper around it (gently) before sealing it up. That worked better for me than tucking it straight down.

4

u/CalligrapherDue7898 Apr 13 '26

great idea! i will try that

Taking notes as I just had my first son in February

1

u/Rrenphoenixx Apr 13 '26

Awww congrats! We have a Feb son too!

Buy yourself noise cancelling head phones if you get headaches. Thank me later.

0

u/Such_Pizza_955 Apr 13 '26

Thank you! Will relay this to my husband. He says the noise makes him feel like he's going crazy haha

8

u/Rrenphoenixx Apr 13 '26

Totally worth it. You can still hear stuff but it’s way less intense. Just remind him that if your kids are over 1, and it gets really quiet but kids aren’t eating- IMMEDIATELY SEE WHAT THEY’RE DOING. Whatever it is, it’s bad lol

5

u/Adept-Buy8986 Apr 13 '26

I wanted to write the same! If sizing up doesn’t help it may be the position

35

u/ManaSawson Apr 13 '26

Some diapers just didn’t work for my boy so we had to try a few until we found one that did work. Huggies was a constant disaster for us. Pampers worked best, second was luvs surprisingly.

15

u/bubbl3gum Apr 13 '26

this is the comment I was about to make. Some brands just dont conform right to shapes of babies, pampers swaddlers always worked out for us, could never use the huggies for some reason.

4

u/WittiestOfNames Apr 13 '26

Huggies for my daughter, Pampers for my son

6

u/CalligrapherDue7898 Apr 13 '26

luvs and parents choice were the only ones that he didn’t leak in surprisingly lol and the pampers from the hospital worked

1

u/DanielleSanders20 Apr 13 '26

I have two daughters so might not be relevant but we’ve had such a disaster with Huggies every time we used them. We love parents choice!

1

u/WillRunForPopcorn Apr 13 '26

Yes, same here. Huggies never fits my son right. Pampers Swaddlers has been best, followed by CVS brand.

1

u/slaptastictimez Apr 13 '26

Huggies were bad for us too

1

u/Mily4Really Apr 14 '26

Came to say. Pampers is a far superior diaper 🤣

All my friends who used Huggies struggled with diaper rash, so I chose pampers and never once had mine had a rash! Not once!

Ps. It's not like i changed every single pee either! I checked before every nap. Changed if it was soggy, but a one pee stayed on until after.

2

u/ManaSawson Apr 14 '26

We use luvs during the day bc we change them often then pampers for overnights to prevent leaks.

1

u/Mily4Really Apr 14 '26

Never even considered luvs tbh! We were so pleased with pampers we never had to try anything else

2

u/shepardmutt Apr 19 '26

That’s crazy!! Pampers made me pull out my hair with leaks and blowouts! My son has been in Huggies for 4 months now and not a single leak, and only a blow out if it’s exceptionally massive and liquid-y while in the carrier!

I swear babies are crazy how different they are!

1

u/Mily4Really Apr 19 '26

That's so funny!!! It really is wild!

52

u/jhjohns3 Apr 13 '26

Size up! Our son was peeing through all his diapers and we sized up and it solved the problem. He just had a lot of pee lol

6

u/CalligrapherDue7898 Apr 13 '26

i thought that too, but it’s still happening since going to size 2

12

u/little-germs Apr 13 '26

See if a size three helps. Are you pointing his penis down when you button him up?

9

u/jhjohns3 Apr 13 '26

Oh just realized you’re using snug and dry, try the other Huggies. Little snugglers has better absorption and leak containment. We could never keep our LO dry in snug and dry haha

3

u/ShelterConnect6328 Apr 13 '26

Same here, the Snug and Dry were horrible for us. I dont like Little Movers either. Little Snugglers have been awesome! No leaks!

2

u/Novel_Newt5251 Apr 14 '26

Mines the opposite. Little movers leak, looove snug and dry. I just have to make sure it’s on “right” like the side pieces are smoothed out completely and the leg ruffles are on the outside. Plus finding the proper ratio of how much diaper is in front VS how much is in back matters too actually

1

u/Sad-Entertainer-5603 Apr 13 '26

We switched to pants , 1 or 2 sizes up at 2 months old Cos out baby is chubbier than usual. So for reference my 4 months old is 9kg now but his L size diaper is for 8-14kg.

6

u/Technical-Leader8788 Apr 13 '26

Or change diaper brand completely. Some diapers just don’t fit some babies body shapes and that’s okay! We had a ton of leaks in Huggies and honest brand but never pampers

17

u/riversroadsbridges Apr 13 '26

Are you super tired and breastfeeding? I thought my baby's diapers were leaking and I was losing my mind trying to stop the leaks, but at least half of those leaks were actually from me leaking milk onto him and not realizing it. Nobody told me about that!!

9

u/CalligrapherDue7898 Apr 13 '26

yk that could be it lol i thought the same thing but it’s always coming up from the top of the diaper. and the top part is drenched but the inside is dry

11

u/Impossible-Berry-194 Apr 13 '26

Have you tried sizing up? Leaks from the top usually mean it’s time for the next size.

3

u/CalligrapherDue7898 Apr 13 '26

unfortunately we have:( he’s 2 months into a size two now.

30

u/Impossible-Berry-194 Apr 13 '26

Maybe time for size 3 then? I usually ignore the weight limits.

4

u/Kbarr866 Apr 13 '26

100% agree

3

u/CalligrapherDue7898 Apr 13 '26

i will definitely try this. we did just size up to 2 after having leaks with 1’s a few days ago. i will say they seems to fit well. not snug at all.

1

u/CalligrapherDue7898 Apr 13 '26

i will definitely try this. we did just size up to 2 after having leaks with 1’s a few days ago. i will say they seems to fit well. not snug at all.

2

u/conquestical Apr 13 '26

We just sized up to size 3 because every. Single. Poop. Was a massive blowout. She is still a pound shy of the upper weight limit for size 1 😂

2

u/Different_Feeling929 Apr 18 '26

Same with my first. He looked like a clown in such a large diaper, but it stopped the leaks!

10

u/Mediocre-raptor Apr 13 '26

My 4 month old has been wearing size 4 since she was 3 months old. Sometimes babies just fit diapers differently. 🤷🏻‍♀️

1

u/Novel_Newt5251 Apr 14 '26

Wow cause my 16 month old wears size 3! He’s on the smaller side but still… wow!

1

u/Mediocre-raptor Apr 14 '26

My older child (just turned 2 a few days ago) has been wearing size 5s since he was about 12 months? He’s had a few growth spurts since then, but he still fits into size 5s really well.

Babies just like to troll us 😂

1

u/Novel_Newt5251 Apr 14 '26

You’re right about that 🤭

3

u/Empty_Palpitation_29 Apr 13 '26

i think you can go even higher. i have a toddler and she uses 5, i started using 5 on my 6 month old baby and it works better tbh

1

u/rennyber Apr 13 '26

Recommend this. My boy is now size 5 at 8m i swear I was sizing up every month for the first few. Any leaking means sizing up or changing more often.

5

u/MurphysLawInc Apr 13 '26

As many said - size up - pp down- make sure all frills are where they are meant to go. A lot of my leaks came from trapped frills making pee bridges 😭

4

u/teacuptina Apr 13 '26

Are you using coconut oil or another oil based moisturizer on him? Took us awhile to realize it after soo many leaks even though inside diaper was barely wet. The oil created a water (pee) proof barrier between skin and diaper and would repel the pee out instead of absorbing into diaper. Now we use a gel lotion that absorbs completely to skin before putting diaper on or just skip the lotion from his groin area

1

u/CalligrapherDue7898 Apr 13 '26

just the boogie wipes brand of diaper rash spray in between changes, i don’t think that would affect anything but i could be wrong.

4

u/smurphypup Apr 13 '26

Make sure his penis is pointing down when you close the diaper

4

u/queeniemab Apr 13 '26

Do you have a boy? If so, place their penis pointing down before closing up their diaper. This prevents leaks from the top. I learned this from the nurses at the hospital when my boy was born.

3

u/Unusual-Neat-3178 Apr 13 '26

Size up. Companies create these sizes to make more money, confusing parents they need to stick within a certain size. I just size up more than usual and it works out.

3

u/MurphysLawInc Apr 13 '26

As many said - size up - pp down- make sure all frills are where they are meant to go. A lot of my leaks came from trapped frills making pee bridges 😭

2

u/CalligrapherDue7898 Apr 13 '26

i didn’t think about that!

3

u/Right-Ad-8329 Apr 13 '26

Had the same issue and had to switch to Pampers!

3

u/Sad_Repeat_7458 Apr 13 '26

Maybe a weird situation, but I’ve found that regular Huggies work well for my kid but NOT the Snug & Dry kind. She will pee through those but does perfectly fine with regular Huggies.

2

u/tasty_quesadilla Apr 13 '26

Came here to say this. This particular brand of Huggies is terrible, but the kind they sell at Costco (little movers?) is way more absorbent

1

u/Agreeable_Friend_177 Apr 14 '26

I had the same experience. A friend swears by snug and dry but we had leaks every time.

2

u/nicole_1 Apr 13 '26

This happened to me!! I had to switch diaper brands. Drive me nuts for weeks 😭

2

u/CalligrapherDue7898 Apr 13 '26

it is driving me crazy😂

2

u/turkeyandsquab Apr 13 '26

We had a similar issue. Although we were pointing the penis down, we realized it could still be angled in such a way that the stream could run along his thigh crease.

2

u/Pale_Spirit3007 Apr 13 '26

Have you tried pampers?

My first did horribly with huggies, only pampers worked. He would leak everytime I used huggies on him. With my second, I tried pampers first since this what worked with my first and it was the complete opposite! Both are boys!

1

u/CalligrapherDue7898 Apr 13 '26

the pampers do work, but he has crazy sensitive skin and they gave him a rash sadly. we just switched to huggies because they’re fragrance free but they just seem to not fit his body well

1

u/Agreeable_Friend_177 Apr 14 '26

I’ve heard little rascals from Walmart are a good brand for babies with sensitive skin. Pampers also has a “pure” version. Not sure if it’d be much different though.

2

u/TriumphantPeach Apr 13 '26

I’m gonna go out on a limb.. did you have him circumcised? I’ve heard the care for that is putting aquaphor or a barrier cream while he heals, and that can cause leaks because the diaper isn’t able to absorb the urine coming out

1

u/CalligrapherDue7898 Apr 13 '26

yes we did, but he has been healed from that for a month

1

u/Seazetheday Apr 13 '26

Try pampers pure or pampers amore? Sadly stupid expensive tho

2

u/pat_micklewaite Apr 13 '26

I don’t have advice but I’ve come to realize some babies just pee and poo A LOT and others don’t. My oldest would constantly leak and have blow outs, multiple poops a day and constant peeing, especially when he started drinking water. My youngest was the opposite, pees a normal amount, one poop a day, and isn’t sucking down water like a fountain. Using night time diapers when we went out for a while helped with the leaking and helped with bedtime, sometimes even doubling up on diapers helped in certain situations. When he was older we’d do a diaper and a pull up, not all the time I just want to say but when we had activities or were going somewhere that we wouldn’t be able to do a million diaper changes because he was also afraid of public bathroom changers of course 😖

1

u/CalligrapherDue7898 Apr 13 '26

he definitely does pee a ton! but this is happening and the line on the diaper is still yellow, sometimes it happens immediately after i put on the diaper:/

2

u/Jessiicaamn Apr 13 '26

Leaks usually mean you need to size up or down. Look up the sizes. Also for my personally I love Huggies and my daughter has problems with allergies and Huggies is the only one she can really feel comfortable in, but Huggies snug and dry would leak so bad. I’d maybe go with the Huggies little snugglers or movers. I’ve had better outcome with those.

2

u/Just_here2020 Apr 13 '26

Bigger diaper and check that it’s over their butt by running a finger around the edges after putting it on.

Source: 3 young kids

2

u/vahhhlicious Apr 13 '26

I had this problem with both boys, usually when bumping up a diaper size. Like a size 2 was too snug, but a size 3 was just a little loose. Try some different diaper brands. Honestly before they’re mobile they twist and turn so must sometimes the diaper just gets twisted or pulled and pee can sneak out

2

u/EvenHuckleberry4331 Apr 13 '26

My son is nine months old and I'm having this problem too. Is it a boy thing? I don't know, but I've literally resorted to trying to aim his penis in different directions when I put his diaper on. Just a heads up to anyone who is also an idiot, it doesn't work.

Sizing up helped with pee blowouts but he still has poop blowouts, I'm not joking, maybe 60% of the time that he poops. It's like it shoots like a rocket straight out of the top of his butt crack, it defies physics. Is it boys? My daughter never had these problems.

2

u/CalligrapherDue7898 Apr 13 '26

with my toddler, the poop blowouts were constant. are you using a diaper with an up the back blowout protector?

2

u/EvenHuckleberry4331 Apr 13 '26

Yeah, I've tried em all... I think it's probably just a phase we have to hang on through until he increases solids and stops the weird formula poops. But seriously, my first had maybe one or two blowouts ever and we were like 🚨 ALL HANDS ON DECK! And now I'm just used to hanging out with a little round biohazard of a baby lol

Some day it'll be a silly distant memory. Right? lol 😩

1

u/CalligrapherDue7898 Apr 13 '26

do you use a formula that contains prebiotics by chance?? with my first he did and had diarrhea constantly until he was on more solid foods. recently he mistakenly grabbed one of the baby’s bottles and drank some of the same formula and later on had a diarrhea blow out lol

could be this, my sons daycare teacher is the one that told me about the prebiotics lol

2

u/EvenHuckleberry4331 Apr 14 '26

He's on Alimentum (like a super hypoallergenic formula) bc he had really bad reflux.... maybe that's it?

2

u/CalligrapherDue7898 Apr 14 '26

my son was on that for a bit and he had super hard poops lol. so i doubt it tbh. we put my son on a goat formula and that’s what had the prebiotics

2

u/ybelli Apr 13 '26

I don’t have a boy so I can’t help, but you should call around stores near you and see if they let you trade in the boxes you have. I’m not sure if it’s different in other states but in California I can just go to a Walmart or target and switch a box/pack of diapers for a different size/brand. Even if you didn’t buy it from their store

2

u/Mountain-Koala-6256 Apr 13 '26

Love the nails 💅🏻 It’s probably the other boob causing this..

2

u/ElmindredaFarshaw63 Apr 15 '26

A lot of people recommended sizing up on nappies but try sizing up on vest. I had this problem with my first boy and one night my husband didn't close his vest and it didn't leak. Turns out vest was too tight on nappy and it didn't have room to expand so it leaked

1

u/No-Bug-3638 Apr 15 '26

Came to say this!

2

u/hebrewhemorrhoid Apr 13 '26

Suggest going up one size in diapers and changing brands.

1

u/mmebee Apr 13 '26

Was your older baby a girl by any chance? Someone had to tell me with my first boy that before closing the diaper you need to sometimes manually point his penis down so it's not shooting pee out the side.

1

u/ManaSawson Apr 13 '26

Some diapers just didn’t work for my boy so we had to try a few until we found one that did work. Huggies was a constant disaster for us.

1

u/madhatton Apr 13 '26

We had a similar issue with our boy. After sizing up on diapers and no luck we bought booster pads from Target/Amazon (https://a.co/d/0eanb200) and they’re great! Helped solve the exact same issue for us

1

u/cielebration Apr 13 '26

We had this issue for some time til we started to layer a cloth swim diaper over the disposable ! Might be an option so you can still use all the ones you already have. We used esembly brand. We also found that the issue just kinda stopped after a few months

Overnight diaper helps when they start to fit that size too, I think a lot of brands don’t have overnight ones til size 3

1

u/Mandalorianus Apr 13 '26

You could try using a cloth diaper cover over the diaposable diaper. After months of experiments with sizing up and different brands it was the only thing that helped us. But it's not guaranteed, some days it will leak anyway. We use rascals pants and a cover.

1

u/bled-sobad Apr 13 '26

My boys always did the in Huggies. 🤷🏻‍♀️ switched to pampers

1

u/4sakenqueen Apr 13 '26

Are you fluffing out the side around his thighs, with my son i noticed if I didnt do that he would sometimes leak thru or it could he just has to pee a lot and the brand won't work for you

1

u/fessa_angel Apr 13 '26

Girl my boy is 8 weeks and I had to try 8 different diaper brands to find what fit him best. I even did all the tricks: ruffles out, pull up the inner ridges, higher in the back, higher in the front, penis point down, penis point up, cross the waist straps, point the waist straps up or down to tighten up the leg holes. Nothing worked with some brands! Here's the brands I've tried. We're sticking with Dyper and Honest as they seem to fit best and have less leakage than other brands.

Dyper - best fit, still occasional leaks/blowouts but not as bad as others.

Huggies Snugglers - next best fit, but irritates his skin and can't be used regularly

Honest - fits him close to as well as the Huggies, but in a size up from every other brand. He's a NB in everything else but a size 1 in these. These are our next choice if our Dyper subscription runs out.

Pampers - too small in the waist when fitting his thighs properly. Sizing up made the opposite problem.

Parasol - the shape didn't match his body in NB or size 1

Millie Moon - NB fit in waist but was too tight on thighs. Sizing up to 1 made the thighs gap really badly.

Up&Up - shape was weird like parasol and also irritated his skin

Luvs - too long for his torso in NB but too big in size 1

Rascals - I have a size 1 sample from a baby box to try when he's bigger. Too big for right now.

1

u/FruityPebl8 Apr 13 '26

I had this problem with my second. His pp kept accidentally shifting to the side when pulling up his diaper to close it. I also found Huggies and pampers to leak the most. We switched to Kudos and it solved the issue

1

u/benijodos Apr 13 '26

Sizing up romper and pants might solve the issue.

1

u/Jaded_Assumption4376 Apr 14 '26

If it is a nappy issue, make sure you face the penis downwards, and make sure all flaps are out. This happens to me when we don’t do the waist band firm enough so could also be that in addition.

1

u/Suspicious_Salt145 Apr 14 '26

Anytime I get multiple leaks I go up a diaper size.

1

u/kelli-fish Apr 14 '26

Same, consistent leaks means it’s time to size up. Also, looks like your tightening it a bit too much and if you have a boy, make sure his penis is facing down.

1

u/Rickeysmiley34 Apr 14 '26

My daughter was the blowout QUEEN. Leaks, poop, all of it. We sized up and it changed everything lol then eventually switched diaper brands

1

u/soontobemrscool Apr 14 '26

My husband constantly has this issue when he changes our son, I watched him one day and noticed the back of the diaper was wayyyy to high up the back. Try pulling it down so it’s lower in the back and has more slack in the front

1

u/learninhowtohuman Apr 14 '26

Millie Moon diapers are amazing! They fixed this problem for us

1

u/CoolBandanaz Apr 14 '26

We have gone through stages with leaking overnight (we cloth during the day and use disposable at night) so we just put a cloth nappy shell over his disposable diaper before we put him to sleep.

It may but be a 24/7 fix for you, but it could be a solution for him for sleep or if your going out?

1

u/lasuperhumana Apr 14 '26

This was happening to us recently (but with our 13 month old, so it’s not apples to apples) - we found that putting the diaper on with the back of it lower than the front stopped this.

1

u/alee0224 Apr 14 '26

I was honest brand all the way but the newborn size didn’t work for my fourth. Worked every other baby though. I am rascals now. But pura brand worked great before we tried rascals. Silly question though, but did you try sizing up? I know sometimes there’s leaks and it’s an indicator that they need to go up in size.

1

u/No-Lifeguard-3883 Apr 14 '26

This was happening with my son as well, it was how I knew to size up! It always fixed the issue!

1

u/HolisticHoneyBun16 Apr 14 '26

Make sure the ruffles are out! That helped me when my baby was having leaks

1

u/FitFarmChick Apr 15 '26 edited Apr 15 '26

I’m sure you’ve done this just hard to see in the picture but make sure the fluffy stuff around the leg holes (I know there’s a proper term for it I’m tired 😂) but make sure it’s all the way pulled out on both legs all the way around. That part isn’t absorbant so if it’s tucked in over the absorbant part could cause the fluid to go up (fluid dynamics always moves from wet to dry area!). Also if you put a lot of diaper cream on that prevents liquid from absorbing into the area of the diaper it’s covering.

Also, my guy did great with coterie and swaddlers were ok but not great for overnight like coterie was. Not sure where you’re from but we found the Sam’s Club members mark premium comparable to absorption of Coterie. The tabs in the front have a cool sticky thing on the end to keep it from bunching up at the waist too!

1

u/_wheatgrass_ Apr 15 '26

I hated Rascals because they did this for me too!

1

u/Thirteen012 Apr 16 '26

Try Huggies ultra dry for boys. Never had leaks.

1

u/This_Bookkeeper5077 Apr 16 '26

I highly recommend pampers swaddlers nighttime diapers. This had started happening to me as well and once I switched to those diapers, never again.

1

u/Funky-Cat-97 Apr 16 '26

You said he so im assuming its a boy, make sure you have his penis pointing down when doing the diaper! I call these ninja pees lol it happens when the penis gets pointed up in the diaper rather than down so it comes out the top rather than being absorbed by the bottom of the diper😅

1

u/EstablishmentFlat135 Apr 16 '26

I hated Huggies. Try Pampers Swaddlers or Pampers pure. No issues ever

1

u/BreakExtreme6118 Apr 16 '26

Pampers are the only nappies I will use for multitude of reasons, never had even a incling of a rash or Any accidents no matter the explosion or a full Night sleep And a weighty nappy xx

1

u/Left_Round8126 Apr 19 '26

You need to up the diaper size.

1

u/Celestial_lillies Apr 20 '26

My baby was waking up with leaky diapers and I switched to a brand called Bambo Nature bamboo diapers…. Have never had a leak again. Mentioning this if the issue is the diaper itself.

-2

u/LucyThought Apr 13 '26

Skill issue

1

u/CalligrapherDue7898 Apr 13 '26

i think not😭
