Searching for a cheap studio

Hello everyone. This is a huge shot in the dark that I'm not expecting to pan out at all, but I've got to try anything and everything.

I am trying so, so hard to help my mother find a studio to rent for around $650-700/month.

After years of trying to get savings together to travel, I finally broke and dipped into my 401k to make my dreams of a long hiking trip come true. I quit my job recently so that I could spend my time preparing for the trip and enjoying friends and family before I go.

Just 2-3 weeks after quitting my job, I discovered that my mother was severely behind on rent and had been keeping it a secret so she wouldn't burden anyone. She received assistance from the county for a portion of it, but it wasn't nearly enough to correct the problem. Since discovering the truth, I have paid off her debts and even turned in the next installment of rent early to try to help the situation. Despite the full lease being paid up entirely, the property management is refusing to dismiss the pending eviction.

My mother is a self-employed house cleaner. When she signed for her apartment, she was making around $3000/month. She had a client pass away, another one moved, and another one who decided they didn't need service anymore because they want to try to remain as mobile and self sufficient as possible as they age. She's also dealing with another client who has failed to pay for services already rendered (I did already have a successful conversation with her about not providing service again until the payments are made). This has all reduced her income down to about $1400/month.

Her credit is terrible and she has two ESA cats (she does have all of the paperwork/prescription available). Because I already quit my job, I'm not worth anything as a cosigner and it doesn't matter how much money I have in my bank account to most properties.

I am hoping against all odds to find a private landlord who will work with me because I do have enough money in my account to pay for a security deposit, an entire year long lease, and an extra security deposit if necessary, all up front to secure a place for her. Any rent that she could afford would be reimbursed directly back to me while I handle the payments and communications with the landlord. But I am already aware that many landlords view up front payment like this as a red flag, so my hopes are not high.

Can anyone please point me in the direction of any help at all? I am filling out job applications left and right in the hopes to become a legitimate cosigner, helping my mother eliminate unnecessary bills, and doing apartment hunting all at the same time and it's burning me out to be doing it mostly alone.

Hi all,

I’m starting a search for a new apartment and hoping to find something a little different from the larger apartment buildings.

I’m looking for:

• 1 bedroom
• Minneapolis (especially Northeast, Seward, Longfellow, South Minneapolis, or nearby neighborhoods)
• Budget around $1,400–$1,700/month
• Smaller building preferred (duplex, triplex, fourplex, or other small multifamily)
• Lots of natural light
• In-unit laundry preferred
• Quiet building with respectful neighbors
• Has a parking spot

I recently toured a few smaller properties and realized they’re much more my style than large apartment complexes. If anyone knows of upcoming vacancies, local landlords, property managers, or neighborhoods I should be watching closely, I’d appreciate any leads. Looking at a late-July move-in or early-August. 🙏

Looking for a room ASAP

Hi, I’m moving to the twin cities to start a new job next week and am scrambling to find a place to stay. My budget is $1200 and am looking for something for a few months (3?) while I look for a house.

I will be working in West Bloomington so ideally it would be within a 30 minute commute. A furnished room is a bonus but not a requirement. I am a male in my late 20s and am ok with roommates of any gender. I don’t smoke, but I’m ok if someone else does. I’m an introvert and tend to keep to myself but am not antisocial and am fine to coexist in common spaces. I do my part to keep things clean and believe that good communication makes any living situation easier.

My hobbies include art, hiking and video games. I also am a pretty decent cook.

My plan is to start working and look to (ideally) buy a house soon so my wife can move up with our dogs and the rest of our belongings.

I’ve been looking at Craigslist, Facebook and a few other sites for a room to rent but since this transition is happening fast, I haven’t found anything yet. If I need to, I may lease an apartment but it’s not ideal since I would have to have a month to month lease and that’s so much more expensive.

If anyone has a room for offer or advice on where else to look, please let me know. Thanks!

Shakopee

I know it’s the burbs, but looking for a place to rent in Shakopee that will be available around Aug/Sept? Feel like I’ve been limited so far with what’s on Zillow. Or am I just looking too early? I’m a new veterinarian moving to the area and have two dogs and a cat, and have a budget with my partner of 2500. Houses preferred over townhomes (omg there’s so many townhomes) would be great if anyone has leads or landlords that they like to work with 😅

Emergency Temp Housing Request (June 1st-June 11th)

Shot in the dark....Hello 👋 my lease is ending May 30 and I have no place to go except my car. I had someone that was going to help me have a temporary place to stay until I go on a preplanned trip to visit my parents in Texas, but the dates moved around and now they can't accommodate me. Is anyone able to host me/have a room to rent for June 1st- June 11th?

I am 23 yo woman and I have no pets. I smoke occasionally outdoors (medical mj patient)

I keep to myself for the most part and am a night owl. I will make sure to keep common areas clean and free of clutter.

ISO Roomates or room in St. Louis Park/ Uptown

Hi, I'm a 28 year old female young professional, and I want to pay off my student loans so I'm looking for a room or roomates. Ideally, I want to keep my rent under 1,200 a month, but even better if it's under 1,000. I'd love a garage to park in if possible. I have a cat, he's neutered and 8 years old. He's technically an ESA, but I really don't mind paying a pet fee. I don't care about gender of my roomates, as long as they're respectful. It would be super cool to make more friends here too, as I am a transplant, but I have been here for about 2 years. My Current lease ends at the end of July, so I'd love to start moving Mid-July if Possible. Please DM me if you're interested.

Uptown Apartments; Current Experiences?

Hello all, I’ll be moving back to the Cities after a number of years in Chicago this August. I’ve narrowed it down to a handful of apartments in Uptown but am wondering if anyone has personal experience (good, bad, anything) they’d share. I’m going for tours mid-June.

Revel, The Walkway, Uptown Lake Apartments, Flux, Blue and Lime, The Asher, Inspire, Track 29.

Grand Mill District apartments?

Moving to the glorious Twin Cities from out of state. Looking for high walkability to plenty of goods and services, restaurants and bars.

I looked at a 2 bed/2 bath unit in the a Grand Mill District apartments, 313 Washington Ave S, and liked it. Now I'm hoping some of you good people with experience living there could weigh in on whether the building is well-run. Managed by Weidner, if that helps.

Also looking for the same feedback on Ironclad Apartments, 811 Washington Ave S.

TIA, because this is tough to do from out of state!

Feel free to DM if you prefer.

Looking for a Home

Hello,

I am on the hunt for a place to live for myself, my husband, and our dog (45lb Australian Shepherd/Border Collie mix). I've got some pretty severe health issues and after my husband lost his job unceremoniously last year (a company hired him just to restructure their department and then laid him off with no warning), things have just sort of been going from bad to worse for us. We spent some time staying with my parents, but unexpectedly one of my parents was VERY resistant to the idea of us staying there until we could recover. In a rush to get into at least a better situation mentally/emotionally, we left and are now staying at an extended stay hotel. The cost for us to be here is his entire paycheck. We're doing a lot of relying on friends and family just to make ends meet. It's been a very difficult time for two people who, just a couple of years ago, had high earning jobs and lived happy, healthy, productive lives. When life hits, it hits with a bat wrapped in poison tipped barbed wire, doesn't it?

Though I have applied for disability, those decisions can take six months to a year, so we only have his income to live off of. We would be doing so much better if we had a small place that was no more than 1200/mo with some utilities included that would let us bring our doggo. Studio is fine, one bedroom is fine. We'd even take a finished basement if it has access to cooking facilities. I can't climb stairs easily, so in order to make lunch for myself during the day, I need access to a fridge at least, and a microwave (don't own one, but could buy one) and/or an air fryer (we own one). Because I'm home alone all day and have mobility issues, safety is key. I need to feel safe where I am while my husband is away at work. Also, my health issues mean I'm generally getting the only few hours of sleep I get a day during the daytime, so preferably a quiet place, but that's more of a secondary need that can be worked around.

Since life hit us, we don't have great credit. However, we do not have any adverse rental history, and could even provide references from the last two places we rented if we needed to. Both of our last two landlords said they would rent to us again, unfortunately, the last place we lived was in North Carolina, and the other is at the far end of St. Paul when my husband currently works in Eden Prairie. We do have a car, but it has its fair share of problems, so it'd be nice if his commute was no more than 20 minutes, but again, we can be flexible for a place that works.

Lastly, we would need someone willing to work with us on application fees and a security deposit. We would never expect not to pay these things, but hopefully someone could give us some time to pay them or maybe tack payments onto rent until they're paid. We do have family members who are willing to help if they need to, but given how much we already owe them, we're trying to minimize borrowing anymore money.

I know this post is getting a little long, but I just want to provide as many details as possible with the hope that someone could help us. We're very kind, quiet people. I'm MN born and raised and he's from Texas. Our dog is 4. He doesn't do well with other animals, but he LOVES people. We both have degrees--my husband (46yo) is a pastry chef currently working as the kitchen manager at a preschool and I'm (35yo) a writer, though currently unemployed and working on my own projects since I'm home locked. Neither of us has any criminal history. We have one car and no furniture--we had to pack and leave NC very suddenly when my husband lost his job so the largest item we have is our dog's crate. Everything else is clothes and a handful of kitchen items. We're very nerdy into gaming, anime, D&D and other tabletop games. We are also very introverted, so we wouldn't have much company. The occasional visit from my family members or we'd host D&D once every couple months. And my husband works early in the morning, so we're typically in bed by 9. Our dog is not a barker, thankfully. We would consider ourselves liberal/democrat, but neither of us is super political in general. The state of the country terrifies us, tbh, so we dissociate with anime and video games. 😂

Feel free to ask any additional questions you think may help. Since we have no furniture, we're open to a furnished place, but we would also just as soon take an unfurnished place and then troll garage sales and cheapies on FB marketplace to make it work.

Thanks in advance, sorry for my book!

Jasmine

Any landlords that have a security deposit alternative?

I can’t afford a full extra month of rent up front for a deposit until I get my deposit back from my last place. Does anyone know of a landlord that lets you pay your security deposit over time?

Seeking tenant to take over my current lease

Hey everyone,

I am currently trying to find another tenant to replace me for my year long lease I just signed. I signed the lease a week before I got a job offer which requires me to relocate out of state.

Here's some info about the property:

Region: Edina

Rent: $1995 per month

Square footage: 1010 sq ft

2 bedroom, 1 bath apartment for rent. New carpet, new efficiency washer and dryer, updated kitchen with stainless steel appliances, quartz countertops and large master bedroom with built in closets. 1 underground heated parking space included in rent. Cable, high speed internet, heat, water and trash all included in your rent. Tenant pays for electric only. Enjoy beautiful Centennial Lakes park just in your backyard!

-This is a second floor unit with no elevator access

-12 month minimum lease requirement

-No pets allowed

-Gross income per month: 2x rent

-Credit score requirement: 700+

I really enjoyed living here, it was very quiet and beautiful, hence why I signed on for another year right before the job opportunity came up.

If interested please reach out and I will connect you with my landlords. Thank you so much!

Looking for apartment recommendations

I'm thinking about moving from Wisconsin to somewhere in the St. Louis Park/Hopkins area. Are there any particular apartments that people would recommend? Ideally, I'd like to get a 1bed 1bath unit.

I'm curious which places offer the best value for their price. Or even which places have good management, if you happen to know any.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Need Apartment Recs

My husband and I are moving to the area soon (I’ll be working at UMN, he’s fully remote in SWE), and we’re looking for some housing recs. We’re hoping to be under $2300 (we’re okay paying extra for parking) for monthly rent, and here’s what we’d like:

Within 30 minutes of UMN - suburbs are fine by me.
Size: 1 bed with den or a 2 bed (need an “office”)
Parking: 2 cars, covered parking needed for both.
Amenities: gym with free weights, lap pool would be major bonus.
Unit: 100% need to have central heating and in-unit laundry. Patio would be a nice bonus.
We have two cats. We also would like to maybe have a more insulated unit (I don’t want to hear our neighbors).

Any recommendations? We aren’t from here and there’s a LOT of options to sort through. We are young professionals, so we’re open to really anything but it would be fun to be in an area we could explore.

Thanks y’all!

Asher Apartments in Uptown

Hello everyone, does anyone currently live/d in The Asher apartments in Uptown? If so, what are your thoughts? I feel like everything in Uptown is closing, I’m a homebody, but I do like to walk around and go check out coffee shops, restaurants, cafes etc.

Any recommendations for specific places/neighborhoods to live with good walking and public transportation?
