Maryland in distress

This is like mild distress. This is like O’s are in a rain delay level of distress

u/Star_Blaze Prince George's County 25d ago
I'm laughing so hard at this 🤣 What are some other situations that would mean Maryland is in mild distress? Two-way shutdown on the Bay Bridge? The tanks at the Baltimore Aquarium spring a leak? That time when our blue crab and oyster populations were dangerously low?

Old Bay just got bought by the Saudis and now the whole world's supply is stuck on the wrong side of the Strait of Hormuz
Nah, that would be a much more major distress

Blame the company that made it. I would have returned it.

u/beergeek3 25d ago
I bought a Maryland flag last summer from the Kite Loft in OCMD - when I got it back home and opened the package it had the same issue. I returned it and the kid working the register did not understand that the flag was defective. I had to explain “black square in the air”. I think he was a seasonal J1 worker and still did not understand, but he gave me my money back.

What are you talking about, just flip it over and hang it properly?

u/Imatros 25d ago
I'm not a MD flag-ologist, but looks like the longest vertical bar toward the flag pole should be yellow and not black. So no way to actually fix that...

A detail I don't think I picked up in all my 40ish years. Thank you for the clear explanation!

u/Star_Blaze Prince George's County 25d ago
The word is vexillologist, I think. Thank you for teaching me something, I thought this could just be corrected by flipping it, but now I see that the Baltimore crest is actually NOT reversible...

Grommets were placed on the wrong side of the flag. You could carefully remove the white edging with the grommets and sew it on the other side, then flip the flag bottom to top. That would put everything in correct orientation.

u/PainfullyLoyal 25d ago
The hooks are on the wrong side. If you flip it over, it'll still be wrong.

I grew up and lived in Maryland for over 40 years, and I have no idea if that flag is the right way up.
But "black square in the air" I can get down with that.
It's still the best flag ever.

u/mumblingzombie 25d ago
Can someone explain that part to me? There are no black squares on the md flag

u/Neil_sm 25d ago edited 25d ago
Black quadrilateral in the air. Should have the smaller black one at the top left with the longer gold part underneath. Looks like they call it a stripe on that official instruction page. So this needs to be flipped diagonally over. But in this case it couldn't be done because the flag-holder grommets are on the wrong side.

u/Consistent_Claim5217 25d ago
It's in reference to the side of the flag that connects to the flagpole. When it's right side up you'll see a black rhombus (not really a rhombus, given the corner of the flag is cut at 90°, but given the pattern on the flag, it's safe to refer to it as such) touching the flagpole on the top corner of the flag. This one has a gold rhombus there, indicating the flag is hung via the wrong side.
The "black square" thing is just a simplified way of remembering it, as the average person, unfortunately, can't identify a rhombus as such when they see it. There's a scathing picture that's painted by such a reality, in terms of what that implies about our public education system, but that's a different conversation altogether

Black trapezoid in the air.

u/mumblingzombie 24d ago
Oh ok so im getting down voted because people dont understand elementary school geometry...got it thanks for everyone explaining that there is not a black square on the flag...like I said

u/ChessieChesapeake Calvert County 24d ago
I bumped you up so you’re out of the negative, but I think you were taking hits because they assumed you should’ve been able to figure out what they meant from the context, and that it has nothing to do with geometry. “Black square in the air” is a common saying when discussing the Maryland flag.

Look at the top left and bottom right corners of the flag. Top left should be black.
1
u/CyberAvian 23d ago
Flag is backwards and upside down. Bottom right corner should be at the top left.

u/mumblingzombie 23d ago
Sure is but there arent any black squares on the flag no matter what way you orient it...my point is that the saying is dumb and Maryland is smarter than to have a saying about their flag that doesnt make any frigging sense and the fact that people can't seem to see that or understand the simplest of statements without looking into everything with a microscope is just as concerning....THERE ARE NO BLACK SQUARES ON THE FLAG...jfc people

It’s upside down?

u/MrZaptile933 Queen Anne's County 25d ago edited 25d ago
Horizontally flipped and upside down, it’s so minor you’d hardly notice. I don’t blame the manufacturer for putting the grommets of the flag on the wrong side

For those who don't know what's going on here: the Calvert quadrants (yellow and gold) should be the other way. Those areas should touch the flagpole with the side that starts with "short black over long gold" segments, while this flag is reversed (short gold over long black). You need to look closely to notice it.
Edit: I accidently typed the colors reversed from how I intended. Fixed it

well IT IS a Ford dealer...
also that WHOLE flag is made wrong... you can see the white reinforcing is on that edge ...
5
u/worldchrisis 25d ago
Yea the grommets are on the wrong side. You couldn't fly it correctly even if you knew better.

Yup. Seen that at DarCars in Silver Spring (White Oak) and the Bethesda Marriott Center.....I did let them know and both were fixed within two day's time.

u/Fadedcamo 25d ago
The yellow and black are off? Am I missing anything else?
1
u/coffeetabletime 25d ago
The flag is upside down.
3
u/Fadedcamo 25d ago
That.... Will make the yellow and black off lol.
3
u/Oddman80 25d ago
not mirrored upside down, like they need to switch which clip they attache through which grommet. but upside down as in the flag needs to be rotated 180 degrees, so the side that has no grommets is the side being attached to the clips.
there is supposed to be yellow/black panel in top left corner - but if you look at the two yellow black panels, along the outer edge, one panel has a long black rectangle and a short yellow square, while the other side has a long yellow rectangle and small black square... the long yellow rectangle and small black square are supposed to be the top of the flag on the clip side. But this manufacturer put the grommets on the wrong side of the flag, so the yellow square is in the top position.

Can someone explain what wrong with flag
6
u/Consistent_Claim5217 25d ago
The little gold rhombus over the long black segment in the top corner should be reversed: black over gold. The grommets holding the flag to the flagpole are installed incorrectly, so this flag technically can't be flown correctly

My friend worked at the state and put up a picture of the flag upside down in his office to see if anyone would notice. No one ever did.

I think the real sign of the apocalypse in Maryland would be if there were no traffic jams on either Beltway. (Do we still get call 695 the Beltway with the bridge out?)

That's called the local test... you spot that correctly, they know you're truly from the area and get a free cup of coffee in the service department.
