PSA PSA for travellers: Using the N2 safely

Hi travellers,

A quick, friendly reminder for visitors (and locals) who’ll be using the N2, especially when travelling to or from Cape Town International Airport. The N2 is one of the city’s main routes and is used safely by thousands of people every day. As with any major highway, it’s worth being aware of your surroundings and following a few precautions. The airport is located near areas that can be unsafe if you take the wrong turn, so these tips are simply here to help you navigate safely.

There is a rough route map (below) of areas to avoid (in orange) and the N2 that should be followed to safer areas.

General Tips:

  • Stick to the N2 until you’re close to the Cape Town city centre (or using the M5 to the northern suburbs), Somerset West or Stellenbosch.
  • Be cautious about taking “quicker” alternative routes.
  • Avoid stopping on the N2 unless your vehicle cannot continue.
  • Keep your doors locked and windows up.
  • Don’t leave bags, laptops, or valuables visible inside the car.
  • Familiarise yourself with the route before you set off.
  • Don’t stop for, or engage with, anyone attempting to wave you down.

Getting From the Airport:

  • The simplest and safest option is to take the N2 directly towards the city or Somerset West.
  • If you’re using a ride‑hailing service or shuttle, wait inside the official pick‑up area and confirm your driver before getting in.

There are plenty of locals who can share advice on routes if you'd like. Safe travels, and enjoy Cape Town.

Rough map. N2 highlighted in blue, areas to avoid highlighted in orange.

Vent / Complaint Anyone struggling? Depression and cannabis recovery in Cape Town

I’ve been sober from cannabis for basically 2 months now, after smoking for 8 years, and I am struggling a bit. I thought things would get better by now but there are so many things “going wrong”. I don’t have anyone to really talk to, so I thought I’d make this post.

Friends and family have been really distant during this time and I honestly feel so lost.

If anyone is going through this and just wants to talk about it, here’s a space for that. Any advice would be appreciated too.

Feel Good White-pill me about living in Cape Town

There's a lot of negativity here, understandably: crime, cost of living, corruption, economy, etc.

I was wondering if there are any positive people here who could white-pill me about living in Cape Town?

Context: South African abroad considering moving back to CT.

Appreciation Post Shoutout to the 5 good guys at Queens Beach who saved my husband’s Sunday evening

It’s been a stressful week, so my husband took the baby and dog for a walk on the Prom so I could have a bit of a break before another hectic week.

He gets home, hands me the baby, and starts shouting he’s freaking out because he thinks he left the baby backpack somewhere.

He runs back, jumps in the car, and goes to check the Prom and then Checkers. I’m already going through all the emotions, because yes, the backpack, sippy cups, nappies, favourite stuffed toy, etc. can all be replaced, but my expensive, deeply sentimental, completely irreplaceable film camera was in there from an outing earlier in the day!

I know this is cynical, but I honestly just thought it's obviously long gone and now I'm going through all the emotions, knowing I'm going to feel this loss for a while.

He messaging me, not at Checkers. Not at the bench where they sat.
On his way home, he makes one last stop at the Queens Beach parking lot where he had parked. As he pulls in, five young guys come running up asking if he’s looking for his backpack.

Apparently they had seen him drive off with it still standing on the sidewalk, ran around trying to find him, and then decided to wait at the parking lot in case he came back.

They waited over an hour.

So if one of you happens to see this: THANK YOU THANK YOU!! I can’t tell you how much that camera means to me, and I’m honestly so grateful I could just cry

Faith in SA humanity restored.

From a very relieved wife who has her camera back, and a husband who gets to not have a terrible Sunday evening after all , thank you. I’ll be paying it forward the first chance I get.

Looking For... Beginner sketching & watercolour classes

Hey folks, so I’ve tried the YouTube route to learn how to sketch and watercolour but honestly, I feel overwhelmed and am not making any progress…

I’m looking for classes that will take me by my learning-feels-hard-as-an-adult hand and teach me right from scratch how to sketch and ultimately watercolour paint.

I’ve done a light google (obvs), and there are so many options, I’m not sure where to begin.

Please help this little terrified-to-get-it-wrong person with your best recommendations!

Oh and PS: if they’re Blouberg side, even better, but will travel some if the schedule works!

Looking For... Laid-back restaurants with comfy seating, good drinks and good food... do they exist?

Looking for a chilled place that serves good food and drinks. Somewhere you can go around dinner time with friends for a good few hours to catch up and be comfortable.

It's winter so somewhere that is comfy inside too.

Even a few suggestions for a bit more alternative places would be great, for example somewhere similar to Banana Jam Cafe. Pub vibes are also good. Somewhere that serves great ribs and a killer whiskey sour is a plus.

We know of:

- Forresters Arms (drinks good but food lacking)

- Woodcutters Arms (meh)

- Banana Jam (great vibe, just looking for something new)

- The Toad in the Village (same as BJs just looking for something new)

- Hassar Grill (too formal)

- Peddlars (did not enjoy)

Areas: all CPT area suggestions welcome.

Thanks!

Looking For... Looking for Overstock/End of roll/ Remnant based Fabric stores in Cape Town

Hey! I’m a fashion designer based in Cape Town looking for unbleached calico fabric — ideally remnants, end of roll or deadstock for a sustainable fashion project. Does anyone know of fabric stores, independent sellers or markets in Cape Town that stock this? Woodstock/CBD area preferred but open to suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Question | Advice-Needed Car fine outside of City of Cape Town

I got a section 56 car fine in the swartland municipality.

I can either pay the municipality or go to court at MOORREESBURG MAGISTRATES' COURT.

I’m happy to pay since I did break the law by disregarding a right turn etc and I’m not driving there to appear in court.

The electronic payment doesn’t state what the reference should be. Do I use the notice number including the slashes ? How do I know if it’s been received ? Call and ask?

I also can’t find the fine on CoCT sites since it’s not in this municipality is that correct ?

PSA Uber and e delivery services in Cape Town becoming unreliable and dangerous

Just a warning based on my own experience.

I no longer feel comfortable using Uber or some delivery services in Cape Town, especially at night. I've had too many situations where drivers were difficult to reach, locations on the app didn't seem accurate, deliveries were delayed for long periods, and communication was poor.

I've also experienced drivers becoming rude or argumentative when simple instructions were given. Recently, a delivery driver repeatedly rang bells and caused a disturbance despite clear delivery instructions, and then became confrontational when asked about it.

Not every driver is like this, but the overall experience has become frustrating and, at times, unsafe.

My advice, especially for women and tourists, is to be cautious when using these services at night. If possible, use transport arranged directly through your hotel, accommodation, or a trusted company.

I've decided to stop using Uber for now. Until GPS tracking, driver accountability, and customer safety improve, I'd rather use alternative transport options.

Stay safe and trust your instincts.

Question | Advice-Needed Is Claremont safe?

My husband and I are looking into buying property (instead of renting) in Cape Town, however, finding a halfway decent property for under R35000 per square meter is proving to be a little more challenging than I thought.

This option seems like a goodie, but I am unsure about the area.

Question | Advice-Needed Atlantis Walking Safety

Hi, I'm thinking of trying quadbike riding at the Atlantis dunes, but I've got no car and the transports services are very expensive if you're coming from town. The best option seems to be the Myciti to Ankerlig Power Station, which is a 20 min walk away from the dunes. Would it be safe for me to walk from there to the dunes in the Morning/Afternoon?

Question | Advice-Needed American studying abroad at University of Western Cape and I have a tons of questions

  1. What are the stereotypes about UWC? For example, is it a party school, is it known as nerdy, etc?

  2. I LOVE punk shows. For reference, for some reason I live right next to University of Cape Town. Are there Instagram accounts for bands in the area or certain bars/places know to host punk shows?

  3. Question number two but with drag shows

  4. On paper Cape Town is pretty progressive but my state is supposed to be progressive yet I keep getting called a f*g and getting misgendered and all that jazz. Like I’ve been presenting as straight because of ICE being in my area and the harassment but if Cape Town is progressive I’d like to be more expressive with who I am as a member of the queer community yk be a twunk with dyed hair.

  5. I’m next to a national forest which is super cool and I love nature but I’m not really familiar with the wildlife in SA. How dangerous are the animals in the area?

  6. Im Jewish. Is there a strong Jewish community in Cape Town? I know there’s a Synagogue right up the street from me but idk how many people actually go. Also is antisemitism common? I wear a head covering daily and get hate in the US but not hate-crimed. I know Jews are currently pretty controversial. Also, any kosher delis or restaurants around? I’m kosher

  7. More of a touristy question, but what are some must have food and places to go?

P.S. Thank you to everyone who ends up responding ❤️

Question | Advice-Needed Stellenbosch to Foreshore Route

We are driving from Stellenbosch to Foreshore. Could anyone advise please the safest route? I was thinking R304/N1, but any advice about this would be most gratefully received. For our other journeys, noted as follows, my understanding is that the N2 should be okay but please let me know of any alternative suggestions.

Cape Town airport to Camps Bay

Camps Bay to Hermanus (R44 for a scenic detour)

Foreshore to the airport

Thank you so much!

I’m near main road and heard stationary sirens for a couple minutes after which a lot of shots rang out for a good while. On and off for about five minutes from 9 AM.
