Concerned citizens, curious beginners, trolls and brigaders: Welcome!

I understand you're worried about our vegan pets, that's awesome! Caring for animals is a great thing. We're all here because we care about animals. There seems to be common concerns in your posts, so I want to address them here:

  1. This subreddit does not advocate for incomplete/inadequate vegan diets. For example, feeding a cat only fruits and vegetables: this kills the cat. We only support vegan diets that are nutritionally complete for each species. That means meat-specific proteins are included from synthetic sources, it is processed into a highly digestible form (like kibble), it is pH balanced for urinary health, and has all other required engineering done to ensure it is a healthy long-term pet diet.
  2. Scientific research supports vegan diets as healthy for pets.
  3. Dogs are true omnivores, not carnivores. They have evolved along humans to be great starch digesters. Dogs can easily be vegan, even high exercising sled dogs had no problems.
  4. Cats are true carnivores. However, research shows calories from plants can be made highly digestible for cats, and synthetic micronutrients prevent nutrient deficiency diseases. These same synthetic nutrients are included in conventional kibble, as the processing destroys the natural meat-specific nutrients. Cats can be vegan.
  5. Surgery, vaccines, flea treatments, antibiotics, and other healthcare is all "unnatural". Conventional kibble is unnatural. Raw diets contain unnatural prey animals. Natural does not equal healthy, and unnatural does not equal unhealthy.
  6. A nutritionally complete vegan diet may improve health. The most common food allergens for cats and dogs are meat and dairy, which can cause itching, skin issues, or breathing problems. Conventional kibbles can contain cancerous compounds, heavy metals, nutrient inadequecies and nutrient overdoses. Most active pet food recalls are due to contaminated meat. Raw diets are dangerous too: nutritionally inadequate and infectious disease-causing.
  7. Dogs do not prefer meat-based kibbles over vegan kibbles

Vegan cat developed struvites

I have a healthy vegan cat who’s fed benevo for years. Bloodwork was always great and have almost no health issues until a month ago. He developed FIC/struvides not long after benevo changed their recipe. I’m absolutely not implying there is anything wrong with the feed - the older recipe kept him in great shape for years, the whole issue might be entirely stress related (recently I started taking care of an abandoned stray kitten who now live on the property and they have visual contact sporadically, there are also noisy cat fights at night). There are plenty of meat-based cats with struvites as well, so I hate to event point to the feed as the source of it all - all these years without paying for meat is something I’m grateful for. Yet I wanted to ask if anyone had any issues after the recipe change apart from rejecting - I know this happens. I’m trying to narrow down the origin of the problem.

What vegan products do you most want for your dog?

Hi there!

We're a vegan pet food company (feedpetaluma.com) and currently produce two oven-baked foods (one for adult dogs, one for senior dogs) and a dehydrated just-add-water formula.

We're looking for feedback on what products we should develop next and would love to hear from this community what else you think is missing from the dog nutrition space. Any feedback is super welcome - what do you wish would be plant-based/vegan but isn't yet?

Thank you!

Food Anyone knows/can recommend this product? Veggie animals Digest+ Cat Kibble

Hi,

I am located in Germany and have 2 cats none of which are fully vegan as I hadn't found a cat food I was happy with.

One of my cats has really bad food allergies and her veterinary nutritionist recommended a food with the quote "please don't worry it's almost vegan but it's safe even without any meat." It contains fish oil and the rest is basically plants. She does really well on it and thrives in the plant proteins without any more digestive upset.

I was looking for vegan puppy food and coincidentally found a vegan cat kibble that is called

"VeggieAnimals Digest+ vegan cat kibble".

I was wondering if anyone knew of this food and could recommend it? Or maybe someone looking for an option that is happy to know about this product.

Thanks in advance

Pets at home Wainwright's discontinued 😭

We've always used a mixture of the dry Wainwright's plant protein and dry Omni for our Prince. He really likes the variety of 70/30 Wainwright's and we loved their price. But now they've been discontinued we don't know what to do. Anyone find anything in the UK that is similar price and vegan? Thanks!

Study Quick rant!

As mentioned here, I recently have decided to transition my cat to a Vegan diet. And I am committed to doing it right, incremental with vet check-ins to make sure its a healthy diet for my little dude. Pulling out if it is not of course.

I previously went to my vet and discussed it with them, and they gave me the generic obligate carnivore speech but then said if I can find a vegan food they can help me assess it to see if it is healthy or not.

I send them the dry food I am considering.

They respond without any assessment simply by sending me an article referencing cats as obligate carnivores. The article is 14 years old.

Ugh.

Found these, they’re very small, perfect size for training! The entire brand isn’t vegan, but they do specify this is a vegan formula.

Hairball preventatives for vegan cats?

(Let's skip the whole can cats eat an all plant/vegan diet thing and assume for this question that these two cats are doing just fine long-term on their all plant commercial kibble diet.)

We have two vegan cats. One almost never has hairballs. Her sister/littermate has frequent hairballs...and usually on the bed or couch of course.

Does anyone know any hairball treatment products that are actually vegan with no animal products like chicken flavor or gelatin? There are some we've found that are close, but have things like natural chicken flavor or by-products of gelatin.

Ideas or brands? Our vet says that just using most oils added to their food isn't a good idea in cats. (Specifically she said: In reviewing the veterinary literature and search boards for information on natural oils and hairballs-coconut oil, olive oil, canola oil, and sesame oil are sources of medium chain triglycerides which have been associated with hepatic lipidosis in cats, so I would recommend avoiding these.)

Question Vegan Wet Cat Food

Hey all! I am considering attempting transitioning my cat to vegan.

Are there any wet foods you recommend that are available in Canada?

I have found a decent dry food that I am going to try (Nature's Hug) but would as well love a wet option. If there isn't a decent wet option, I will likely just give him the Vegan dry food plus a meat based wet food.

Question Hydrolyzed Diet Experience

Hey all,

Curious if anyone has experience with an allergy pup? My poodle has been battling allergies for a while now and we are now doing a food trial. I was able to get Purina HA Hydrolyzed vegetarian formula. As far as I am aware, the only thing not vegan is the vitamin d3 which may come from lanolin.

Has anyone had success with this food or is there some obscure completely vegan hydrolyzed food I am not aware of?

Right now I'm at the point if she needs to eat food where the only issue is the d3 source, I'll just have to deal with it.

Please let me know what worked for you.

Question What Vegan Dogfood has worked well for your dog?

What Vegan dog foods did you put your dogs on and which ones did you like the best if you tried more than one brand? My dog is not very healthy according to the vet and I want to put her on Vegan dog food to help her as my Vegan friends with dogs all rave about Halo. What do y’all suggest?

Discussion Response to the argument of my vegan friends.

About the evidence concerning plant based cat food, I am already sure it can be healthy if done properly, but their claim was - it is immoral to not give them food programmed by nature / it's speciesist to force our morals on to naturally carnivorous animals. How do I respond do that? I have some ideas, but I would want to hear you out, please.

PSA they reformulated benevo cat food

And my cat has rejected it.. and I have non of the old stuff to slowly incorporate. What a ridiculous move by benevo. The only reason I can think of is that they are using lesser quality ingredients and made cuts.

Edit I did look at the ingredients and they did increase the protein from 27.5% to 32% and the kibble is smaller so it's easier for smaller cats to eat. So I think it's a positive switch but it's kinda annoying how sudden the switch was.

Question Plant based for fish?

I went vegan about two-ish months ago I believe but I’ve had a fish (Blood parrot cichlid) for three years now. I was always into animal care so he has lots of options for now. But fish food expires and I’ll need to replace the main food soon. Does anyone have fish (preferably cichlids) who eat plant based? Ik it’s a very small product that lasts a while but if there is a healthy plant based version I would prefer to buy that. It’s possible this is too niche to have good opinions or evidence for safety but I just don’t know. Thanks for the help :)

Just wanted to spread the word on an upcoming vegan cat food brand.

I just finished watching a live zoom meeting/webinar hosted by In Defense of Animals, featuring the co-founder of Virtuous Vittles, Briana Schweizer, who answered the question of if dogs and cats can be fed plant-based (generally yes, but one possible hurdle I remember mentioned is that they may be very picky).

They plan to release vegan cat food this year that really aims to address the issue of cats being picky eaters better than other brands (she did clarify that they still focus on nutrition first and foremost).

I don't know where else to share this info, recommendations would be appreciated, or you could share it yourself if you want.

I've been informed that although there is the risk of vegan cat food causing crystal piss, the animal flesh version of cat 'food' could also cause crystal piss, so anyone using crystal piss as an argument against feeding cats vegan cat food are bullshitting.

Lastly, I know this isn't absolutely necessary, but the more vegan cat food brands, the better, and they asked people in the zoom meeting to spread the word, so I did.
