News - Paywall DA wins its first township ward in Emfuleni, beating ANC by 8 votes
Paywalled Content:
- The DA won its first township ward in Emfuleni, beating the ANC by a mere eight votes.
- Alliance friction and systemic municipal failures, including severe refuse-collection backlogs, allegedly drove the ANC to defeat.
- The ANC intends to challenge the election process legally despite the High Court dismissing an urgent application.
Voters casting ballots next to mountains of uncollected refuse have delivered a historic blow to the ANC, handing the DA its first-ever township ward victory in the fractured Emfuleni Local Municipality by a razor-thin margin of just eight votes.
The DA secured 1 001 votes against the ANC’s 993 votes in Ward 28, flipping a traditional ruling party stronghold. Local residents openly admitted to switching allegiance, citing neighbouring Midvaal’s superior service delivery under DA governance as the catalyst for their change.
ANC Sedibeng regional spokesperson, Mphikeleli Msibi, admitted that the collapse of basic services and an internal alliance split heavily fractured their support base. The South African Communist Party (SACP) contested the ward independently, bleeding 3% of the vote away from the liberation movement.
“It’s a setback. We worked very hard to retain the ward,” Msibi said. “It was a highly contested terrain with the emergence of new parties, including our alliance partners, the SACP. They have done damage to us.”
“We can’t take away the challenges of service delivery. We heard people of Ward 28 complaining about potholes and illegal dumping. We are going to do our best to improve services in Ward 28 and the entire Emfuleni,” Msibi added.
Msibi also revealed that the ANC had allegedly tried to halt the election in court before voting commenced, citing irregularities.
“We lost a case in the Gauteng High Court based on urgency after establishing irregularities ahead of the elections. We are not bitter losers. We will challenge that decision. We still believe a process should have been followed to declare the elections free and fair,” he stated.
Crumbling infrastructure exposed
The historic political shift follows a series of damning revelations.
News24, in recent months, has reported on several service delivery failures.
Politically, the DA’s mayoral candidate for Emfuleni, Kingsol Chabalala, had also asked tough questions of the municipality.
He previously uncovered systematic maladministration within the municipality, including R112 million spent on refuse collection while streets remained buried under filth and R4.6 million blown on a stadium refurbishment that left the facility looking like an overgrown jungle.
There has also been widespread collapse of water, sanitation, and road infrastructure maintenance.
Reacting to the watershed victory, Chabalala said the result proved that township communities were done with empty promises.
“Today marks a historic moment for Emfuleni. The DA winning a ward in the township shows that communities are ready for change, accountable leadership, and a government that puts residents first,” Chabalala said.
“This victory is not just for the DA. It is for every resident who believes Emfuleni deserves better service delivery, safer communities, job opportunities, and leaders who listen. This is only the beginning of fixing Emfuleni, rebuilding hope, and restoring dignity in our communities,” Chabalala said.

Discussion Come Dine With Me
what are your thoughts of the show, the South African version of course?
when I was still interested in cooking shows I used to watch it. one time I fell in love with one of the contestants but that's another thing.
I have never heard anyone's opinion of the show. how it is produced, what it takes to be there, do you just apply to go and get selected or it is just selected people for entertainment. IS IT REAL?
I wonder how the contestants' lives are after production and airing of their episodes. Oh and it seems like it is always middle-upper class people contending. but that is kind of understandable because I don't think a kasi person would buy aubergine and ham and whatnot

Discussion Grooming advice from men (particularly black men)
Hi guys, hope you're all doing well. I'm looking for some grooming advice for my beard hey, black men who are able to achieve a clean shave look without the razor bumps, how on Earth do you do it? I've been traumatized, guys! Lol, I've tried damn near every type of shaving blade, every shaving cream, every shaving gel, every shaving technique, every aftershave balm, every bump control cream etc. Absolutely nothing gives me the clean shave look without getting razor bumps! So I resorted to using an electric clippers to shave coz the razor bumps are less severe with a clippers than with a blade - and I've genuinely tried every type of blade; single, double, triple blade but they all leave my face looking horrible with the amount of bumps I get.
I was doing research on YouTube and stuff about grooming techniques for black men with sensitive skin and thick curly hair, and apparently, I should get something called a foil shaver. Have any of you guys ever used this machine? Apparently, it gives you the clean shave look without causing bumps coz the blades don't touch the skin. But I don't know guys, I'm really nervous coz as much as I want the clean shave look, doing a clean shave is what caused the really bad bumps, would it really be different using the foil shaver instead of a blade?
Please let me know guys, this foil shaver is like my last hope or I'll be forced to just let it grow which I don't want. Or is there any other method or product that works for you guys? Thank you so much.

Discussion Unite180: Sending intentionally vague messages in community groups to get people to message them, proceeds to try and convince them to join the church
Hi all -
I am a member of a community chat group in a suburb in Pretoria. I got a notification today of a message sent by a girl known to me, saying, and I quote, "Are there any students on this group? Please pop me a message☀️". No further context provided. I, however, am acquainted with her, and I know she is a member of Unite180 and a so-called Ugroup leader. Knowing this, I could smell the BS from a mile away, and knew this was church related. Someone on the group then proceeds to probe her for more information, at which she gives another vague answer, saying it's to ask people to join a cell group, with no further clarification as to what church this is for, and what a cell group is, for those who don't know. It took even more probing to get her to explain what a cell group is, but still no mention as to what church it belongs to. I find this incredibly shady. Why not just come out and say, "Hi all students, I'm (insert name), I'm from Unite180, I'm having a Ugroup at (place and time), please feel free to join"? Instead, she asks students to message her privately. Knowing this church and it's strange ways of conducting religious business, it feels like a way to corner someone, like isolating prey from a herd. Am I wrong for thinking that she should just be upfront as to why she wants people contacting her? I have seen this happen on multiple occassions from this specific church, and I am getting fed up with their tactics of seemingly isolating their members from the rest of the world.

Nostalgia Strawberry Pencil Sweet?
Hi guys!
wow really need some help - can’t get it out of our heads.
My fiancé & I both figured out that we both were obsessed with strawberry pencils when we were in school. We were in different schools in different provinces so safe to say, we are soul mates. lol.
We spoke about it and we both liked the EXACT same brand.
Came in a pack of 4 long strips, all stuck together but you can pull them apart - in plastic packaging.
does anyone know what I’m talking about? and if so, anyone know what it’s called and what the old packaging looked like? I’m dying for some nostalgic dopamine.
thanks in advance

Discussion Forced to move to America
i apologise if this question isn't a usual or allowed post for r/southafrica, but im seeking genuine guidance and advice.
i am 20 years old, 21 in december. my parents have been talking about applying for trump's refugee program for quite a while. nothing has ever come from it. they have known for YEARS now that i do not plan on moving countries any time in my near future. even when they'd get interviewed for international jobs, my mom would joke about how i can stay.
now the time has come when they have sat me down and told me that they are serious about doing the paperwork, passports, etc. and they know i want to stay. then they said that because im not 21, i have no say and i will go with them.
as far as im sure, the age of majority is 18? on top of that, i refuse to go to a place where all i know is my parents and brother. ive been wishing to get out of this house for give or take 5 years. now i have to be stuck with them for maybe another 5. in america as well. i also don't want to leave my friends, girlfriend, and job behind.
what do i do? are they right, or is there a workaround?
edit: i can't see any reason i would be happier there than here. my only reason to maybe even start to consider it would be live music, and that's still not enough.
they are trying to persuade me by saying your usual same old stuff "theres no future, no jobs, no money" blah blah blah. now its gotten to a point where my mom will say stuff like "well if you stay here your kids wont have a future, and if you come with us atleast you'll see twenty one pilots" that sort of stuff.
i also have a great job at an SPCA. been working there 15 months, and ive already been promoted and been given 2 raises in my time there. i am financially stable.
i don't want to break my parents' hearts, but i know that moving will break mine
