Question First period! Help!

So yesterday my 12 year old started her period. She was super chill about it because we have discussed what and how.

What I need now is some advice on some of the products out there now. When i was 12, it was pads and tampons. She seems to feel comfortable using pads and doesn't want to use tampons because she's not a fan of sticking it 'up there' - her words. I think that would rule out any sort of period cup.

How do period underwear work? She said her friend told her about it, but all I can think about is free bleeding and it going everywhere. So if anyone knows about these and uses or has used in the past, educate me, because I'm clueless.

Also I use regular pads - when I have my period that is - but i'm hearing that people are moving more to cloth pads for environmental reasons. What are your thoughts on those as well

Thank you!

Welcome to a new stage of motherhood!

We are living in the best time to be a tween and get your period! There are more options today than ever before and with each passing day the sub-options get better and better.

Period undies have surged in popularity over the last decade. The percent increase in adoption is highest among the youngest menstruators.

The biggest thing to know with period panties is fit is everything. They need to be super snug. Not just in her crotch but all over. Anything less = leakage on moderate or heavy flow days and/or if she's active.

Like pads or tampons, period undies come in a variety of absorbencies. Most will have a rating showing it holds as much as x # of pads/tampons. The bonus on period undies vs other options is styles are unlimited. If she is used to briefs of bikini for everyday undies those are readily available. Boyshorts and even bike shorts are available too.

Finally a word for the future. Gussets. The absorbent part varies a lot. This is true in multiple ways including overall size and feel. The overall size - particularly how far up the back it goes - is relevant if her flow becomes heavier over time and/or if worn for sleeping. The overall feel is important as the same reason some girls want to try period undies after trying a pad and not liking the feeling/sensory reality can recur.

Glad to offer more specific information or answer questions.

I would suggest Always pads with Flexi foam. They are very absorbent but thinner and more comfortable than regular pads.
