Meta Advice.

I’ve been working at a used car dealership and currently make $1,800 every two weeks. Last month, I sold 17 cars.
We’re only on the second day of June, and I’ve already sold 3 cars this month. At this point, I genuinely feel like I’m being underpaid for the value I’m bringing to the dealership. I’m not trying to sound cocky or arrogant, but I know I’m an asset to the team and my numbers back that up. For those of you who work in the car sales industry, what would be a fair pay structure to ask for? Should I be looking for a set commission per car, a percentage of the gross profit, or a higher base salary plus commission? I’m trying to figure out what someone producing these kinds of numbers should realistically be earning. Any advice from experienced salespeople or dealership managers would be appreciated. I just want to make sure I’m being compensated fairly for the results I’m bringing in.

They are not going to structure you pay differently from the other sales people. Time to look for another job. All the biggest increases in income j have ever got were from switching employers

You don’t get a set % per car sold?

Nope. Last time we had a conversation he said $200 per car but that’s nothing .

You don’t really ask for a %. Every dealership has their own commission structure. If you’re asking about what to ask your current dealer… I’d start at 20%

This is crazy but it sounds like you don’t know your pay plan. As described it seems a volume pay plan, but at some point then number should increase. I don’t think you’ll be seeing a percentage of gross if it’s not explained in your plan. After a 17 car month you should probably find out exactly what is being paid out, the 1800 EVERY TWO WEEKS is wild. Bottom line, yes, you are being underpaid. Not sure what can change.

One young man I know, who I had the privilege of mentoring when he started in the car business, I saw him post yesterday that his store is paying salespeople $7500 (maybe $7800 I forget, but over $7k!) For 17 cars a month. I want to say $7800 for 17 cars. That's totally on brand for him and any store he's managing at. (He fast tracked his career, did exactly what I said, and he's on the desk, he's like 24 years old, I'm so proud of him). Anyway, yes, you can and should be making way more money than that. That's real bad.
