The start of my Hozier inspired tattoo

Post image

The instant I heard I, Carrion, I knew I had to get a tattoo of it. Idk what it is about that song but it just makes everything around me fade away when I listen to it. I ended up reading a lot about The Fall of Icarus, and all of it really resonates with me. Anyway, the song inspired me to get a tattoo of the story - here it is after the first of 2 sessions :)

General How did you discover Hozier?

The first time I heard his music was in 2020 during Dark S03E05, it was In the Woods Somewhere.

I had never heard anything like that voice before. And his lyrics?! Pure poetry! They make me feel things I didn't even know I could feel. Saying that his music changed my life is an understatement.

How was it for you all?

Hozier genre

It's interesting how people seem to universally refer to Hozier as "folk" when he hasn't really made much folk music and most of his music is pop soul.

Song Discussion I, Carrion possible idea interpretation???

Was listening to I, Carrion again today and heard the things I've seen people talking about with icarus and the word Carrion (which might i add bird connotation in the song then brings in the idea of scavenger birds like Carrion feeders) but I realized something else also. Not sure if someone has said it yet but the way that Hozier sings "I, Carrion icarian" also sounds like "i carry on" as if even though fallen he has strength to still continue on or some other meaningful message through the song.

Another interpretation is the play of Carrion (decaying fleshed a dead animal/ death) so that it's literally I, Carrion Icarian, "I, dead and decaying icarus." Or even with my thoughts of wordplay, "I, dead and decaying, I carry on (Icarus)." Icarus was foolish but determined, so of course he would be known for despite the danger, carrying on into flying higher and higher to the sun.

Anyway, just my two cents.

What's your favourite Hozier album?

I realize there are extended editions of each of these albums, but poll options are limited. So if your favourite is an extended album, vote for the corresponding "core" album. For instance, if your favourite is "Unreal, Unearth: Unaired" then vote for "Unreal, Unearth (2023/2024)."

I recently got the new Tomodachi Life game and of course I had to spend a little time making this album cover. I don't think I have the patience to attempt Wasteland, Baby! or self titled.

Which Hozier song for karaoke night?

Which Hozier song for karaoke night?

“Hear me out…. Butchered tongue.”

I’m singing in a karaoke contest in my hometown and wanted to sing a Hozier song because his music has always meant a lot to me. Winner gets $1,000 so I kind of want to actually try instead of just saying “screw it” and not planning and thinking about song choice.

Song choice is considered in their judging so the popular answer would be take me to church or too sweet but I’m just not feeling them.. take me to church is in an awkward range for me and too sweet is just not what I’m really going for. If I can feel connected to the music I feel like I’ll sing better and be more comfortable and authentic. We’re on round 3 and the first songs I sang were ‘what the water gave me’ by Florence and the machine and ‘heart like mine’ by Miranda Lambert.. mainly just cause I like them but I am also pretty emotionally attached to them. I’d sing ‘NFWMB’ but I gotta keep it clean.. I thought about ‘Francesca’ but it’s still not exactly the vibe I’m feeling. I also thought about ‘first light’ but I’m not sure if the little “ahh”s in the beginning will be there or not and it might feel awkward.

Anyways I’d really love to hear your guys’ thoughts. What do you think would be a good Hozier karaoke song?

Student Survey Results!

Hi Reddit! A few months ago, I reached out in this group to share a survey for physical media collectors and vinyl enthusiasts. Now that my project has wrapped up, I wanted to share some of my results with you all! I was thrilled with the response I saw from this community, and I was able to collect 754 total responses from all around the world. This far surpassed my expectations, and I was able to learn so much from each of your responses. THANK YOU!!!

If you're interested in seeing some of those results, please check out the LinkedIn post below. I'm also a recent graduate embarking on a job search, so if you have advice, connections, or anything to offer a new grad, I invite you to connect with me and start a conversation! I earned my Master's degree in Public Relations earlier this month, in addition to my Bachelor's degree in Communications, and I'm seeking roles in person/hybrid in the Boston area, or remote. I have significant experience in sports, music, and entertainment, and I have previously been given the honorary title "Chief Smile Officer" for my contributions to the team and positive attitude!

Most poetic lyrics?

I'm teaching my Year 9 class Unseen Poetry at the moment and so far it has just been a fantastic opportunity to shoehorn in my favourite non-conventional literature.

I'd love to create an activity where they annotate a part of a Hozier song.

Any ideas? So far I've considered Talk (potentially inappropriate/unseen element might depend on a lot of prior knowledge about Greek mythology) and Abstract (Psychopomp) - just because I love the song.

Annunciation - a little laugh

I know there’s a running joke/discussion about Hoziers lack of enunciation (edit) in some songs, so this was too good to not share with the masses.

My daughter (she’s 5) was singing yesterday and she said “mom, why does he say limmy jimmy?” And I said “I’m sorry but I don’t understand what you mean” and she said “when my time comes around, limmy jimmy in the cold dark earth” 😂😭

Safe to say Work Song will never be listened to the same again.

Hozier - Self Titled Gay as hellllll

Post image

Taking us straight to church

Edit:
- of course this is a critique of the church, and also the whole song has verse after verse of smut in service of that message
- of course he is not gay, but we also know he’s an unapologetic ally and artists make art about others experiences all the time
- I’m gay and these lyrics bang okay

MEATY?? High horse??? Whatchu got in the stable?? bffr babes

Song Discussion Song meanings (I got bored)

Angel small death- explores the toxic, intoxicating parallel between a dysfunctional, intense romantic relationship and drug addiction

Take me to church- emphasizing raw, physical, and emotional intimacy over dogmatic, condemning doctrine

Work song - death can’t take me away from love

Aryatins lullaby- embracing one's dark, destructive, or intense inner "demons" rather than trying to suppress them

Shrike- The lyrics express regret over a past relationship, where the singer feels they failed to appreciate their partner

Eat your Young- a dark, satirical commentary on societal greed, capitalism, and the exploitation of future generations by the current one

All things end- accepting the inevitable conclusion of relationships and life, transitioning from heartbreak to a sense of relief and peace

Through me- a pandemic-era reflection on finding strength and resilience amidst overwhelming grief, loss, and chaos.

Unknown- betrayal by someone trusted

Francesca- unconditional, rebellious love

Jackie and Wilson- feeling lost, lonely, and desperately idealizing a stranger or brief fling as a "cure" for oneself

Someone new- explores the fleeting, daily experience of falling in love with strangers as a form of emotional escapism and distraction from life's hardships.

To be alone- explores the intensity of finding solace and humanity in an intimate, private relationship, particularly when loving a "damaged" person in a relentless modern world,

From Eden-perhaps toxic pursuit of someone who is not entirely available or who is viewed as "pure".

In a week- something happy

Sedated- explores themes of escapism, numbness, and toxic dependency, using metaphors of addiction to describe a desperate longing for connection in a draining world.

It will come back- the inability to resist a toxic, addictive relationship, framed as a warning to a lover to not show mercy

Foreigner God- feeling like an outsider within one's own culture or relationship, grappling with distant, unfamiliar, or inherited values

Almost- describe the feeling of nostalgia and healing

Movement- soulful, metaphorical ode to admiration and the captivating power of a lover's movement, portraying them as an inspiring, almost divine, force

No plan- embraces the lack of a predetermined purpose or afterlife

Nobody- limitations of love between flawed people
As it was- a haunting, nostalgic song about returning to a love

Talk- a song about the intoxicating, irrational nature of love and the, at times, deceptive nature of romantic pursuit

Dinner- explores the frustration of enduring tedious, polite social engagements ("dinner") and harsh, critical, or boring conversations ("diatribes") while craving, instead, the company of a romantic interest

Would that I- explores the transition from past romances to a new, all-consuming love

Sunlight- explores the overwhelming, dangerous, and intoxicating nature of love, comparing a beloved to a burning, divine sun

Wasteland- love song about finding hope, intimacy, and humanity in the face of an apocalyptic, "end of the world" scenario

Anything but- deceptive, upbeat track from Unreal Unearth that explores the 8th Circle of Hell (Fraud), representing a desperate desire to create distance from a partner

First Light- symbolizing the end of a long, dark journey through hardship and personal turmoil

Abstract- a reflective song about memory, trauma, and finding gentle beauty in the inevitability of death

To someone from - explores the, intimate, and often difficult, merging of two people from vastly different backgrounds—one cold, one warm—as they build a life togethe

Butchered tongue- gut-wrenching lament exploring the violent suppression of indigenous languages and cultures

Fare well- chaotic journey toward recovery, blending the desire for personal joy with a cynical acceptance of past traumas

Empire now- explores themes of anti-colonialism, revolution, and the fall of the British Empire

July- explores themes of hope, longing, and emotional survival (COVID)

That you are - explores a deep, spiritual, and all-encompassing love that makes the mundane, modern world feel cold and isolated by comparison

Why would you be loved- explores the vulnerability, risk, and ultimate questioning of worthiness within a romantic relationship, likely in a turbulent or uncertain context.

Silence song- enjoying physical intimacy

NFWMB- portrays a relationship where the partner is a terrifying, powerful force of nature, inverting traditional protector roles
