Discussion Klamacz: "Arma Reforger is not a test app, not a testbed, its its own game, continuation of the series... but in some ways it is a test, for future Enfusion projects"

There we have it. The Schrodingers testbed. Reforger isnt a testbed, but is a test at the same time, for future Enfusion projects.

In all seriousness, its good that this was addressed. Reforger is its own game, its own project thats separate from A4 (allegedly), seen as a continuation of the series by its lead dev.

In some way yes, it is a test for what happens later ... the work we do now will be valuable for those projects we do later.

So while its all of that, its obviously the first game of this scale on the engine, which provides a lot of help for the future, from lessions learned.

Now for what I feel is the most important part:

"It is not 1:1 (with A4), some things are remade (in A4) due to lessons learned from Reforger".

This is a bit paraphrased, but the message included is the same. Ive been openly very pessimistic about the future of Arma. Im very passionate about the series, been with it from the very beginning. Reforger has too much stuff, IMO, that is rather made approachable, accessible, than realistic, a step forward in realism or complexity. Hearing that some things are completely remade for A4 is a glimmer of hope. Maybe, hopefully, they remade gunplay completely, maybe they remade weight completely, maybe other parts of character controller are also much more complex and realistic in A4.

Maybe there is hope after all? Or.. then, it might just be more of what Reforger did wrong, going harder down that "consoles first" design philosophy. This is the same BI that tried a A3 subscription model some months back, after all. These devs assure us, in the QA, that they arent disconnected from the game, they play it even on their free time. But can we be sure that BI execs share that?

What do you guys think? Can we trust that enough has been remade in A4, that it wont feel like Reforger 2.0?

Klamacz on Reforger vs A3:

We wanted it to be a worthy continuation of Arma series, something that the Arma 3 people, people who play Arma 3 and love it, would enjoy because we made the graphics better, the performance better, bc it has bigger scale.

After the scale part Klamacz goes back a little bit, explaining on how Reforger doesnt maybe have the width of Arma 3, not as much content and assets, but its deeper, more moralistic and fixes some issues that couldnt be fixed in A3.

Scale.. I think everything is scaled down in Reforger, which is why this part was a bit strange. Not only the width, but depth in many cases too, is worse than A3. Projectiles disappear at 2500m. Soldiers stop rendering soon after 1000m. The flight model is straight out of BF.

The gunplay has less depth than A3, quite obviously as a result of design decisions. Weight has been twice revised, but still very arcadey and forgiving. Getting hit in ones arm doesnt really change accuracy. The gun is glued to the center of your screen. Theres literally almost no sway. Theres no recoil. Theres very little dispersion. Exhaustion has minimal effects on how well one performs in combat. Where is the depth in that? Gunplay and movement are only the two most important parts of the most basic gameplay loops there are.

Discussion 30 Hours of FIA in 1.7 – Thoughts, Suggestions, and a Few Thank Yous

First, some genuine appreciation.

I've noticed a lot of positive changes since the 1.7 patch:

  • Less chopper spam and fewer trolls/griefers
  • Matches last longer and feel more balanced
  • I haven't heard one complaint about "aimbot NPCs" – that used to be a real problem
  • No one has mentioned getting their radio dug up recently

Whatever the devs did with the third-party system (serendipity or whatever you call it), it's working. Thank you for that.

Now, onto the FIA.

Ranking System – It Needs Work

I understand the idea behind ranking, but for the FIA it feels backwards. We have two invading forces to fend off. Ranking should have been settled before they even landed.

Here's the problem:

Everyone spawns as a Volunteer with just a pistol. Running supplies ranks you up fast, but killing enemies or their AI gives very little. If you join late, you're stuck at low rank with limited gear. Yes, I get you can steal it! But, only your ranked weapons.

And here's the kicker – Arma is fickle. I've died just from jumping next to a vehicle. So you respawn with nothing, you're under attack, and you have to find weapons again while the enemy is shooting at you. If you're not a high rank? You're stuck with a pistol. Yes, again I know you can pick off the dead, I am raising a broader point with this.

My Suggestion for FIA Ranking

If ranking stays (and I'm not sure it should), then give us a default loadout that persists:

Rank Loadout
Volunteer Pistol, no storage, fine.
Partisan Sa-58, better clothes, little storage (no backpack)
Captain Max storage, random gun, more medical supplies

Right now, if I die I lose everything. That's punishing in a game where half the deaths are engine-related, not skill-related.

Vehicles – A Real Problem for FIA

The BRDM is my most used and most flipped vehicle. But here's the issue:

If the FIA loses all its bases, we have no way to get vehicles back. We can't build a Heavy Depot. We can't spawn anything. We're reduced to a running simulator. And I just as well go back to DayZ and my 5k hours of running there. Tents yeah, I understand how they work, but we need more ways to skin the cat and tricks up our sleves!

The the "despawn timer” or “cleanup script” as old-timers call it, removes vehicles that haven't been moved. I understand it's for performance. But when I flip a BRDM and run to find a repair truck;  only to come back and find the vehicle already despawned;  that's frustrating, I am sure this kills it for more then just me.

My Suggestions for FIA Vehicles:

  1. Give FIA a way to keep vehicles persistent. The engine allows it this memory tell me old .sqf code was… addEventHandler ["HandleDamage", {0}]; (I think??), prevent despawn. FIA should have that option.
  2. Add "jacks" to the FIA arsenal. A big backpack item that can flip a vehicle. Exclusive to FIA only. Load it from an arsenal or arsene/ truck, use it in the field.
  3. Let us establish new hidden bases. The island has caves, basements, castle, docks, ruins, and the entire southwest corner that nobody uses. If FIA loses all its bases, we should be able to set up a new secret base in one of these locations. RCON squads from RU and US could still find them;  that's their job.

The Command Truck / MHQ

Right now it only sells tents and radios (which make this vehicle/tool useless kinda). In the future, maybe it could let us establish a new mobile base that only enemy RCON squads can detect.

Supply Depot Destruction – Love It, But…

I love that teams can blow up supply depots. Great dynamic. But now I'm seeing the return of multiple Heavy Depots to counter it.

As an FIA player, I remove supplies by dropping them on the ground. But I don't think the devs know that supply depots don't report their own storage levels properly on one of the marker signs.

Maybe FIA should also be able to destroy base buildings? Just a thought.

A Few Last Things

  • I no longer play mods much. I've been around since Flashpoint. I appreciate the convenience of jumping straight into a game, ranking up by running supplies, helping the team, and just having fun. I always tell people: "Play to have fun first. If you don't, we won't win anyway."
  • Radios used to matter. I was disappointed when they were made useless because the wrong groups complained while the players who actually used them weren't heard. I call this "The Atlas Effect", listening to the loudest, not the most invested.
  • I know FIA is still in development. I'm not demanding changes overnight. I'm just sharing what 30 hours of 1.7 has taught me.
  • I wrote Bohemia a physical letter asking for a third faction. I'm glad they added FIA. I just want it to reach its potential.

TL;DR

  • Ranking for FIA needs persistence or removal.
  • Vehicles need a way to stay or be recovered.
  • Let us establish hidden bases.
  • Give us jacks to flip our own vehicles FIA exclusive.
  • Radios and command trucks should matter again.

Multiple big updates planned for this year

In the Q&A they just confirmed multiple large updates, including OFFICIALY TRACKED VEHICLES!!!!!!!!

(Just one vehicle though) Seems to be the M113 from the leaks we had some months ago.

Rest is still not announced!

Edit:
Multiple big updates is kinda misleading. I quote Klamacz:
"We have some big plans this year, we have multiple big objectives that we want to realize, there are some interesting things in there" and later on it was also clarified that no new vehicles (beside M113 and apparently a tractor) are coming, also no new terrains.

1.7 Update Explanation on driving changes in 1.7 from Devs Q&A

The devs have said that the driving changes were necessary because the old system couldnt be upgraded and limiting them from fixing stuff like sliding vehicles on handbrake, implementing Ackermann steering geometry and more.

to prevent folks from spawning in games as FIA. I believe they must have multiple accounts, they spawn as FIA and set that group to 'Private', then leave and join with another account as US/USSR. Then when you join as FIA, you can't get in a group. I could be wrong but check out server 17516030 and try to join as FIA.

FIA has its issues, but some of that might be your approach to it.

Maybe put less effort into defending bases and more into building a hidden FOB or two. Place them near a stash, but far enough it isn't obvious, and the same for a base/supply point or two you want to hit.

I just keep hearing people in chat acting like the game's over because they lost the one location with a pre-made hvy vehicle spawn, or the guy with enough rank to build an ammo depot only did so at the base they're losing, etc. The stash is your new gear source (a mostly deserted base is another).

On Everon, there are usually five stashes. They're not all in prime locations for everything you want, but you don't really want them in prime, obvious locations.

The stashes spawn with maybe 50 supply, and only hold 300. Fill a supply truck, stick an AI in the passenger seat so it doesn't despawn, and hide the truck nearby.

It's supposed to play differently and be more difficult. You have to be the kind of person who "embraces the suck" or you won't like it much.

A lot of people know all of this, certainly, but quite a lot of people seem to be playing it like it's one of the other factions and making themselves miserable in the process.

GRS modular vests and rigs glitch HELP

Hi, recently the server I play in had every mod deleted because of the update once they started adding them back up GRS had a big change, mainly everything looks bulky and dirty now but there’s this glitch where when I try to customize a plain vest everything gets deleted every time I try to load it back, leaving me to either use non modular vests or the premade ones that look to bulky and ugly, also the backpanels don’t allow you to carry anything anymore so I have to carry an additional back pack also anything that I put inside the vest (mags, nades, smokes) also disappears, first visually so I can’t take it out even if the game tells me is there and then when I reload the kit it disappears completely. Does anyone know a fix I need to make loadouts for my guys 🙏 I’m on Xbox
