Announcements Discord Server!! and new safety rules (= bbye WhatsApp Groups)

We have created a Discord server!! WOOHOO, nerds!! woo-hoo. You can join it here: https://discord.gg/b8Z82SKz

Why have we done this?

  • Discord is a place where we can connect more easily with directly each other for "chatty" topics.
  • Discord lets people actually get to know each other and have more personable, meaningful interactions.
  • Discord lets you use a pseudonym or your real name -- just like Reddit. You choose. Your email and phone number remain private. This is an important privacy and security feature. You can even create multiple accounts, if you want/need.
  • Discord can be (auto)moderated -- and can be kept 100% under the mod-control of students and alums.
  • Discord lets you create channels for special interests or groups (e.g., we could create an "incoming freshmen" channel and a "house hunting" channel or whatever y’all want). This means we can stay central in one big group where we can help each other and collaborate, without getting disorganized or overwhelmed (i.e., you can get alerts for select channels on a server).

What does this change?

  • We will NO LONGER allow ANY WHATSAPP GROUP LINKS on the sub. At all. This is for everyone’s safety. We weren’t comfortable with facilitating Athena Studies' (and others') ability to reach vulnerable students, farm personal data, and create and dominate unsafe spaces. We cannot monitor (let alone mod) WhatsApp, but we *can* keep Discord safe. Discord will let you protect your privacy and we can use tools to keep spammers, scammers, trolls, etc. out.
  • We will no longer allow "Who is studying XYZ this year?" posts. This is a GREAT thing to do on Discord, where you can actually chat with people who respond. Consider starting a channel for your program, year, etc. if you want to meet people!!
  • Other “chatty” sorts of posts will also be removed and asked to move to the discord. We want to keep what we’re doing here appropriate for the medium. This will be an “emergent” filtering process that we can work on together as a community.
  • Not much else will change! Reddit is still Reddit. You do not have to join discord.

What is Discord NOT?

  • Discord is not a live-chat helpline to resolve uni admin drama issues. We are peers, not administration. All you can get here is perhaps peer support. Just like on Reddit.

Nah, I still want to use WhatsApp.

  • OK, you do you. You are welcome to share WhatsApp links privately or in-person on campus. A flyer with a QR code might be something to try (Although I’ve heard Athena Studies is also doing *exactly that*). Word of mouth is probably best.
  • We will nonetheless no longer facilitate sharing unsafe links in this community. That means no public WhatsApp links on Reddit. No exceptions. This is a hard boundary for the mods.

What about the Discord server that I already made?

  • We want to create a larger, centralized server that can serve as a starting point. If you have a thriving server for a sub-group of the UvA, we want to find a way to link it and/or work together (maybe create a channel that syncs with your #general? Something like that?)
  • If your server is kind of empty, we want to invite you to join the central server and switch from having your own server to having a channel and being part of a larger community
  • If you have another idea, let us know!

Courses and Programs Admissions, enrollment, and ChanceMe! mega-thread

All questions related to admissions, enrollment, etc go in this thread, please. More resources will be added to this post soon.

Edit: most undergrad and many master's programs at UvA do not have competitive admissions processes. If you qualify, you're in. If you can't pull it off, they'll fail you out. If you're worried about getting in you need to look up whether your program is competitive/selective and then look at the unique selection criteria for that program. https://www.uva.nl/en/education/admissions/bachelors/applying-for-a-selective-bachelors-programme.html

Edit 2: For 99% of the questions people post here, the contact point is the education desk: https://student.uva.nl/en/topics/education-desk

Courses and Programs Recommendations for Media Studies electives and research supervision?

Hi everyone, I’m an incoming student in the Research Master’s in Media Studies, specialising in Cultural Data & AI. Course registration starts next Monday, so I’d really appreciate any advice on electives.
I have a few questions: are students usually allowed to take electives from other departments or faculties? And are there any courses you would particularly recommend for someone interested in computational methods and AI/media studies? Besides,  are there any professors or research groups that are especially approachable for supervision, research projects, or RA-style opportunities? I’m hoping to get involved in research as early as possible, so any advice from current or former students would be really helpful.
Thanks so much! Any suggestions would mean a lot.

Hey you,

I am currently doing my thesis research project. And we need your help!

We need 350 people (Not easy). Here are 2 ways you can help:

  1. Please take part - 25 minutes, online, anonymous: This is the correct new link: https://uva.fra1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_eJ9Hx1L4Gf4i594

For a psychology research credit go here: https://www.lab.uva.nl/labtool/lab/projects/availability/16771

  1. Forward it to 3 people right now (18+ and English speaker). To family, friends, colleagues, neighbours, group chats, status — really, to anyone.

Unfortunately, time is of the essence we need to be done in two days!!! Every forward gets me to people I'd never reach myself.

You are a lifesaver! Thanks 💛

Warm regards,

Joshua

Administration Drama & Questions Applying to UvA via Colloquium Doctum as an international student, has anyone been through this before?

Hey! So I'm 22 and I'm trying to get into the Econometrics and Data Science bachelor (English track) at UvA through the Colloquium Doctum pathway, looking at 2027 intake.

The thing is, I'm an international student with no Dutch education background at all, and I genuinely can't figure out if this route is even available to me.

I've emailed UvA admissions a bunch of times already but honestly the replies were super vague and I didn't really get anywhere with them.

So I figured I'd just ask here:
- Can international students with no Dutch education background even apply through Colloquium Doctum?
- Has anyone actually done this for an English-track bachelor at UvA?
- And what were the requirements like? Is it literally just a maths exam and English proficiency or is there more to it?

Would really appreciate any help, there's barely any info out there about this for international students. Thanks!

Courses and Programs Questions about "Probability Theory and Statistics 1" Course

Hi, I'll be starting my first year in BSc Psychology in September and had some questions about this course (6011P0168Y).

  • How many places are there, in general or for BSc Psychology (first-year) students specifically, or is there an unlimited amount of places?
  • Am I likely to get placed with late course registration (in August, in October)?
  • For those who have taken the course, how would you rate this course and what is the course load for someone with a solid background in mathematics?
  • Is there a set schedule every year as well (lectures on specific days of the week) or will that be determined at a later date?

Thanks.

P.S. I'm also wondering if conditionally accepted students (not officially enrolled yet) can register for courses or add scheduling preferences?

Courses and Programs Incoming Exchange Student – Which Block 2 Courses Would You Recommend? (Business/Media Courses)

Hi everyone,

I'm an incoming exchange student at the University of Amsterdam (Economics & Business) for Semester 1 and I'm currently planning my courses.

For Block 2, I'm considering the following courses:

  • Business Analytics
  • International Money and Finance
  • Strategic Management
  • Crime, Justice and Conflict Otherwise
  • Media Culture in Transformation

I'm planning to take 2–3 of them and would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has taken these courses before.

A few things I'm particularly interested in:

  1. How difficult are these courses overall?
  2. What are the assessment methods (exam, group project, presentation, essay, participation, etc.)?
  3. Is attendance mandatory for lectures or tutorials?
  4. How intensive are the tutorials/workgroups?
  5. For International Money and Finance, I've heard there may be random group presentations during tutorials. How does that work in practice?
  6. For Strategic Management, is tutorial attendance strictly checked?
  7. For Business Analytics and Econometrics-related courses, how heavy is the workload and how difficult is it to pass?

I'm also wondering about course registration:

  • During the first registration round, can students choose their own tutorial/workgroup times?
  • If tutorial groups are assigned automatically, is it possible to request a change later?
  • Is there an add/drop period before or after the semester starts? If yes, how flexible is it for exchange students?

Any advice, experiences, or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Event Anyone want to team up for the AI Youth Challenge? ($1M prize pool, no-code, free London trip for finals)

Hey guys!

I stumbled across a global student AI competition called the AI Youth Challenge 2026 and wanted to see if anyone at UVA wants to team up and build something.

I know some hackathons can be intimidating if you aren't a CS god, but this one is actually super accessible. Here is the quick rundown:

  • Who: Students of all backgrounds (undergrad or grad). No prior coding experience required.
  • The Tool: You use a platform called Accio Work (it's a no-code AI builder made by an Alibaba team). Basically, you describe what you want to build, and the platform helps you ship it. They give you free AI credits to use.
  • The Stakes: A $1,000,000 global prize pool, official Alibaba AI Builder certificates, and internship opportunities

If you're interested in teaming up, learning some AI toolsets, or just trying to get a free trip to London, drop a comment or DM me! I can send over the registration link and the info group. Let's get a UVA team on that global stage!

International Things Stuck on deciding

Hello all,

I have been accepted into UvA’s astronomy and astrophysics masters program as an international student from the US. The only problem is that I take an ADHD med for both ADHD and hypersomnia that’s unavailable in Europe.

I’m torn between taking a slightly worse quality of life for this amazing opportunity or keeping my quality of life and accepting a slightly less prestigious (but still great) opportunity at a US based school.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

International Things Adhd medicine

Hi, Im a incoming student from the us. Currently I am diagnosed with ADHD. I wanted to know what the process would be to receive new medicine and typically how long it would take? The ones I Currently take are considered illegal(journay PM)in the Netherlands. Does UvA have any sort of resources for students regarding this? Or someone I can reach out to?

Courses and Programs Questions About Attendance for both orientation and courses as an exchange student (AUC)

* reposted due to Reddit error

Couldn't find any information about AUC specifically and for exchange students so I was hoping someone here as some insight! I'll be an incoming exchange student for one semester in August, and AUC states the orientation is mandatory, but it is very long (24-28) and I might be unable to make it. They did not provide any schedule yet. Those who have experienced it, especially exchange students, is it actually really compulsory and what do they do? I assume it is a little different from UvA since we register courses earlier? And I see something about sessions floating around for UvA orientation but I'm not sure if it is the same for AUC.

Also, according to the handbook, class attendance is mandatory for 80% of classes, but does AUC split into lectures and seminars/ tutorials? Lectures typically do not have their attendance taken in other universities, so I was wondering if it is the same case for AUC! Thank you so much

Courses and Programs Prerequisite class for social science

edit. If anyone has any experience with admission could you please let me know who to message other than education desk and admissions? Ive contacted quiet a few different people about this problem and not gotten a response in 10 days :[. Looking for other univ options at this point.

Hi! Im conditionally accepted to a masters in anthro program here but one of the requirements was to take a quantitative/methods research summer course. I missed the deadline to register because it was in the middle of my finals and also I was stupid. They say vaguely that there are other options to complete this requirement, like taking a course not at the university? Ive never had a requirement like this and it makes sense but also the 400 dollars I had to gather for it definatly threw me off. Has anyone else had something like this for your program? Were there work arounds instead of applying to a full 10 hour a week course? Its not a problem to do it, just want to know how common of a thing it is.

Student Life and Culture UvA Psychology work load and international students

Hi, i've been offered a place at UvA to study psychology but i would like to know how its like as an international student with no one familiar around you, managing living alone in a new city with people speaking a different language and balancing your studies with your daily chores, navigating areas, grocery shopping, cleaning etc whilst also having fun, if anyone could please tell me about their experience(the amount of work load the university gives, how difficult it is to score well in exams, how often they go out, experience in general) it'll be really helpful! And i would also like to know what kinds of events the university hosts, how the student life is etc etc

Courses and Programs Examinations Board Appeal

Hi, I was wondering how effective making an appeal to the examination board is? I was rejected from the Economics Masters for not having sufficient maths in my degree (EBE bachelor at the VU) and I wanted to try and appeal the decision. Does anyone have experience with making an appeal? Are they lenient when it comes to appeals or is there something specific they tend to reply to?

Courses and Programs Public International Law at UvA

Hii everyone

I just got accepted into the Public International Law LL.M. at the University of Amsterdam starting this year, and I was curious to see if there are any other people here who also got in. Would love to connect with future classmates before the program starts!

I was also wondering if there are any alumni from the program in this subreddit who might be willing to share some advice or insights. In particular, I’d love to hear about:

Which electives/courses you found the most interesting or worthwhile

• Professors or seminars you’d especially recommend

• Tips for balancing workload, networking, moots, internships, etc.

• General experiences with the program or career opportunities afterward

Really looking forward to starting the program and hearing from people who’ve gone through it (or are about to)!

Thanks :)
