We don't need to propose with diamond, a specific company just lied about that being the norm until it became true. You can use any other pretty rock, it'll work just fine. I don't recommend using an ugly rock though, your partner might feel insulted by that.

And plenty of us didn't. Like, I get that the company you're describing made us a small minority, but we're still out here. Anyone can join us.
