We don't need to propose with diamond, a specific company just lied about that being the norm until it became true. You can use any other pretty rock, it'll work just fine. I don't recommend using an ugly rock though, your partner might feel insulted by that.

My mom’s engagement ring was emerald.

It recently broke, so I get to be the man who gets his mom a replacement one.

And because it is emerald it won’t break my bank.
