Figure it was to show his pocket device isn't a time related machine just freezes the people you want in place

I might be reaching, but I thought it was a Life is Strange reference, with the (ghost) deer showing the protagonist the way to go and therefore the way to address the issues in her heart, sort of like a Spirit Guide.
