Discussion Advice for hitting more hooks

Pyke main, 1.4 mil mastery here. I've noticed from my gameplay recently that I've begun missing q's way more than before. Currently emerald 3, so it could be because people are getting better at dodging as I climb, but whenever theres a pyke on the enemy team, my teammates become droolers (especially adc's) that can't dodge his hooks.

You should try holding the hook, often they burn flash or you can see what's the pattern in the movement of your enemies

I don’t know if I am suited to give you advice, but what I try to do is holding Q so I can get closer and you seem them panicking and wait for the best time

Just hold the Q to see dodge patern and then throw it, usually helps me

Dont throw the q right away. The enemy will cc themselves trying to sidestep it. It's super funny. Feel free to tap the q for the poke and cycle your other abilities to get away for easy damage.

A thing nobody mentions is that somewhat like thresh, if you dont put any movement command and just Q while the model is "looking" somewhere else, there is an higher chance to hit because most people try to predict it based on the direction of your model to dodge

The best thing about pyke is being able to move while charging it tho

Sometimes its good to to E first just to close the distance and then hook infront of their face

Too risky if you E then you got CC'd before you even throw the hook

I didnt say it was safe, sometimes the hook is worth the risk though

B4 Lol i played a lot of AoV on a champ that is a mix between zed and ezreal. That game is like an aram (cd was 2s), so ik my stuff about skillshots.

There are 4 patterns when it comes to dodging: 1) Completely ignores a skillshot is coming - tThis is what you get mainly at veery low elo when enemies don't even know what your skills do 2) Dodge banally in the most obvious direction - At around gold maybe you find this. They know they have to dodge but they are still very predictable. 3) Dodge in the way you wouldn't expect the m to walk - This is surely where you are at. It's kind of skillful to hook them but they usually have a pattern, even tho it's complicated. Stuff like an order of dodges (banal, thoughtful, banal, thoughtful, thoughtful, repeat) or situational (banal when playing aggressive and thoughtful when playing defensively). It's possible to read enemies but not everyone is good the same to do it. It's also requires to be very quick to do it since enemy could change his mind about how to dodge on the spot (you can feel he was thinking to dodge left but at the last moment he changed idea. Not in the sense he was trying to trick you: he literally changed idea because he understood at the last moment you would catch him, so he dodged to the right). 4) Entirely loss of a pattern - Only very skilled players get to this level. They know once they are in your hook range you either hit or miss and they are comfortable with it. And they make sure you can't read patterns because they make sure they won't have. Sometimes they could even ignore your hook at all, so now there are options to consider (left, right or still). Here it gets very chaotic. And very funny. I got to this when i peaked top1500 on AoV server.

EDIT: you will probably never find 4 in LoL since you don't have to fight around skillshots 24/7. Cds here are longer than AoV so people don't have to think about it that much. Maybe master+ just 1% is like that.

Hold it

I'm D1 but I almost always throw the hook immediately. For me it is more reliable to hook quickly where they will instinctively dodge, especially if you hooking horizontally to them or from max range. If you are closer to them then holding hook can be good since you can just walk even closer while charging hook.

You could a) W or hide in bush, and when an enemy is close enough E dash stun. Then Q. b) Be the backline, wait for the enemy to be focused on/engaged with an ally, then Q. More likely to land. This is more for teamfights/ganks than standard lane hooks. c) Wait for the enemy to be slowed/rooted by something. Most ADCs have some soft CC. Then Q.
