Switching to Mint with dumbphone

Hi all,

I recently got a dumb phone (Sunbeam Horizon) and was successfully using AT&T. The Sunbeam website says that Mint Mobile offers the most "options" as a service for their dumb phone so I switched over, keeping my phone number.

Since switching/activating my SIM card yesterday, I am running into a lot of issues:

  • Not receiving texts consistently: I can send texts easily but I am not receiving all my texts, including from iPhone and verification code texts. I can make/receive phone calls. iMessage/Facetime/RCS have all been turned off and de-registered.
  • APN: It is unclear which APN I should be using. I am no longer receiving picture messages (which was successful when I was on AT&T). I have the option to toggle between T-Mobile MVNO (Wholesale) and T-Mobile Retail (fast.t-mobile.com).
  • Voicemail is only working sometimes. When I re-boot the phone, it tells me it is "setting up visual voicemail" but then when I go to the voicemail screen, it is blank. My husband and called and left me a voicemail while sitting right next to me, but when I checked to see if it worked and called my mailbox, it said it was empty.
  • Service randomly changes from VoLTE/4GE to "No Service."

I should note that my nephew who lives with me has the same phone set-up and has no issues. He receives all texts, pictures, voicemail, etc without a problem.

Do I need to actively try and fix something or is there a lag-time for things to work "properly" when switching carriers? Thank you!

Try swapping the SIM card with him. If everything works properly after the swap then your SIM card could be defective.

I’m assuming the phone was bought as unlocked right?
