State of the streets

Just been down Upper Street/Highbury & Islington streets are still such a state. Smashed bottles and glass everywhere...

Club and the fans should really be doing more to clean the streets...

As a Season Ticket holder and massive fan who enjoyed all the celebrations I personally think the club should’ve been involved with the clean up. Would’ve been a big positive PR move for them as much as anything.

Maybe it’s just lack of experience! 😂 if we win more in the coming seasons (🙏) then hopefully there’ll be some lessons learned.

The club are funding the cleanup, as per Islington BC’s twitter.

When? Next month?

Oh I didn’t know that. Good to hear and then I retract my previous concern :)

Which means they aren't it seems. This morning only Islington council employees were cleaning, and honestly they started cleaning way too late and with way too littl stagf

Would have been cool if their socials showed something like players helping out clearing the mess or at least highlighting cleaners work. In any case nothing prompts you to love local club as your neighbourhood smelling with a mix of bin juice and urine

PS my street clean up has not even started

They have been active and involved. They were responsive to our residents association concerns, provided security, blocked off some residential roads etc. Clean up started immediately as well straight this morning.

Bollocks have they. It’s 1am 24 hours later on Drayton park and the only people who have done anything are the building residents and the businesses. One business next to the wall which stopped ambulances getting through has spent three hours sweeping the street. The residents deserve a tiny bit of respect here.

That’s great to hear - sorry I ever doubted this magnificent club :)

Want to add that the amount of piss-filled water bottles i saw this afternoon was disgusting

It’s so disappointing and disrespectful to the community. The complete lack of public toilets, portaloos and bins was only ever going to have this outcome.
The borough streets and parks have been used as an open toilet.

The club should be held entirely responsible.

Loos I will grant but the amount of rubbish out there is ridiculous. Nothing about your team winning means you have to buy a crate of beer bottles and drop them in the street once you're done with it.

If they're happy to bring it with them, they can carry it home.

unless extra bins are provided, people in a crowd where movement isn't possible aren't going to have much alternative

Maybe a nice big donation to a local Islington charity too.

They’ve planned the parade alongside Islington council. Paid for the clean up and contribute millions of pounds towards the local community both directly and indirectly.

What and how would you like them to be held accountable for?

They'll never think about it again by this time next week. It's just a lot of people that like to complain for the sake of it.

It took a few days to set up, it will take a few days to clean up. Imagine the complaining if they'd locked down the roads again today just to clean everything up?

1

u/PandaBallet2021 2d ago

Spoken like a true non-resident

2

u/rio_wellard 1d ago

I absolutely am a resident, and was penned in living on a road that was closed during the parade. I also don't care for Arsenal at all. The one thing that is relevant is that I'm not a mard arse

17

u/Old-Ease-5771 2d ago

Maybe all the supporters that came from outside of Islington could come back and take their rubbish with them.

it shouldn't take so long to clear up, it''s disgusting and the council had a whole month to prepare bins, portaloos and a cleaning squad for the morning after

4

u/Beautiful-Shallot705 2d ago

They really just dropped 5000 guard rails and hoped for the best

Yeah, I think the council underestimated the size of the event. Liverpool Road for example should have been shut to traffic. Tbh given Upper Street was closed due to the parade it should have been obvious that a the adjoining N-S road would be the main thoroughfare. Some poor people stuck in their cars all day whilst thousands of fans streamed past them.

Shit-show

Walked from my gaff in Holloway to my girls' place on Upper Street - pretty sure I'll need new Reeboks from the amount of glass in my soles 😆

As at 7pm Monday, I’m a little disappointed that there is still so much rubbish and glass everywhere - I assumed the clean up crew would be all over it given this was 100% expected

u/red-cat1988 2d ago

Same here. I live up in Highbury Barn and the place is still an absolute mess, including the Barn, the Fields and Blackstock Road. Just walked down Upper Street and there are two lone street sweeping vans doing overtime outside the Town Hall. Further up towards Highbury Corner, and all of the side roads are still an absolute tip. The irony being plastic bags are hanging empty on side railings flapping in the wind. Why did people not use them for their rubbish!!

I feel so sorry for the poor guys and girls who work in the street cleaning team and the council offices. I tried to call the council earlier about something completely unrelated, and their phones are off the hook.

It's not fair when it starts impacting Islington residents going about their daily lives.

They’ve been working on it since about 7am. You can say that people shouldn’t have made such a fucking mess in the first place and I would agree with you, but they can only clean it up as fast as they can, it’s not as if they’re sitting around with their thumbs up their arseholes hoping that a strong wind will just blow it all into Hackney.

11

u/Old-Ease-5771 2d ago

7am?!! They should've started last night. Kids had to walk through that rubbish to get to school!!

4

u/beginningtheory 2d ago

When I was younger, Rangers left Manchester literally ankle deep in rubbish after their 2008 riot - had to walk to school through it and was absolutely disgusting.

Just a grotesque sense of entitlement to just drop rubbish wherever they feel like it.

2

u/smooth-as-mud 2d ago

You don’t need to tell me mate I’m not the council, all I can do is write what I saw when I went for a walk this morning

4

u/fledglingpenis 2d ago

They didn’t imply you work for the council. They’re echoing a sentiment (inspired by your observation) that the council should have began the work earlier. Whether or not it’s possible is another thing entirely.

Then contribute higher council taxes

I’m not an arsenal fan but live in Islington and tbh I’m struggling to get too vexed about this, given (as far as I understand) this is the first such event in 22 years. If it was a regular occurrence it might be different but I just saw it as an exceptional, unusual event that pretty much inevitably and unavoidably going to have an impact on the local area, even if well planned (not to say it couldn’t have been planned better) but within a few days will be back to normal. Or am I missing something?

5

u/Flat-Ad-9609 2d ago

That’s fair but also the event could have been better organised. Where were portaloos? Or signs saying the stations would be closed to exit from a certain time? It could have been better for residents. The council have a habit of organising whatever and residents are an afterthought

2

u/PJP1331 1d ago

Yeah they probably could have done better with that - we got a letter saying there would be severe disruption; didn’t specify exactly about how it would impact specific stations or anything but I just took it to mean to expect all of that would potentially be disrupted. They probably could have had more portaloos which would certainly helped, though give the scale of attendance I’d imagine there wouldn’t be physical space to put all those needed for such a crowd.

1

u/roothyemorg 1d ago

I think they did put the station and road closures online. It was all good around Hornsey and Seven Sisters area, good vibes and not one bit of glass on the floor even on the day. Maybe cos it’s more residential round there? I hated the flares though, they stink! Wish they’d ban them.

folk just love a moan

6

u/SuspiciousView2861 2d ago

I guess we got lucky on Canonbury Road. People left their trash by the sole bin that wasn’t removed. Took my dog for a walk and noticed Essex Road had also been swept perhaps. I’m assuming and hoping they’re working on it in parts - not ideal but I was pleasantly surprised to see my street clean. People were also quite mindful yesterday.

7

u/Vanilla_Face_ 2d ago

My flat near Canonbury is on the route - our street was totally clean by 8am this morning. Wouldn’t even know there was an event yesterday.

2

u/DazzaHazza1975 2d ago

I left my flat at 5:30 and it was proper Children of Men so someone’s been busy. Did see a few lost souls at that time too.

1

u/jaycey120 1d ago

Islington have asked Hackney for help, Islington were out of their league and pretty incompetent.

1

u/Reg1c1d3 20h ago

Club are paying for the clean up. It’s easy to criticise but there’s not a way to have over a million people on the streets and expect it all back to normal in 24 hours

-6

u/banjonose 2d ago

The club are literally paying for the cleanup. Binmen and cleaners are working overtime to clean it. Let people have some joy in their lives and deal with some mess for one si gle day

1

u/Fantastic-Ad9582 2d ago

The clean up must not of cost very much. It’s absolutely filthy out there with the exception of the emirates. The emirates had a full jet wash earlier. Everywhere else is stained with piss.

1

u/beginningtheory 2d ago

And the people who got assaulted? Not just one day for them, is it?

1

u/banjonose 2d ago

That's fucking awful, should never have happened and I hope the people responsible see serious justice for., but also this post was about litter...

1

u/DownToFuck1 2d ago

Always gonna have a few bad apples amongst 1.5m people. Can't blame the whole parade for that.

1

u/beginningtheory 2d ago

Thanks for that insight u/DownToFuck1

1

u/DownToFuck1 2d ago

People in this sub and r/london don't seem to know what fun is unfortunately. They all seem to hate seeing people happy.

-14

u/Tight-Yogurtcloset-4 2d ago

it’s normal after a big event. Everything should be clear by midweek.

-1

u/duduwatson 2d ago

The club pay for the clean up, policing, and also the stewards.

-8

u/Stock_Table1859 2d ago

Obviously a fan of some shit club that’s never done a parade before. It only finished 12 hours ago. Go back to celebrating your mid table finish and bore off.

-2

u/BannedAccountSadFace 2d ago

The council never provide enough bins. You can’t take your rubbish with you for 2/3 hour walks until you pass a bin that isn’t full.

It’s actually easier to leave rubbish in the street and just clean up that area.

1

u/jaycey120 1d ago

They removed the bins to prevent people climbing on them.

0

u/BannedAccountSadFace 1d ago

And then moan about rubbish. Cant have it both ways.
