Funhaus Video IT'S OK TO TEXT AND DRIVE? - Dude Soup Podcast #132
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlqnv6Ce9pc102
u/whindonesian Jul 26 '17
I'm just trying to listen in the background at work and these air horns are actually triggering me...
60
u/Berktheturk09 Jul 26 '17
It was the first time I've ever been genuinely annoyed watching/listening to a Funhaus video. Had to stop. Does he stop doing it at some point?
41
u/whindonesian Jul 26 '17 edited Jul 26 '17
After the first like 3 minutes the rate decreases noticably and then after they finish talking about texting and driving he stops completely.
In their defense, they made their point, but they could have done it another way. It would have been much funnier in retrospect if Lawrence was constantly distracted by his phone, instead of playing the same air horn thats in every spotify ad and 90% of popular songs nowadays.

Thank you. Dude soup is my favorite show of theirs and I gave up after only 2 mins before deciding to check reddit.
6
u/BBrotz Jul 27 '17
Thank God, it was really annoying haha . Also who doesn't pay for Spotify now, cmon
2
u/whindonesian Jul 27 '17
Stubborn people like me who believe that their business model consisting of annoying customers into buying their product to end the torture that is their ads, is a shitty way to do business.
And I'll speak with my wallet on this subject by not paying for spotify. Also, if you play it smart and patient you don't have to listen to ads either.
7
u/BBrotz Jul 27 '17
Or I just started paying 4 years ago to support a service I like and use every day rather than making it some moral battle
3
u/Sypike Jul 27 '17
I buy my music (both digitally & physically). I only use Spotify at work for short periods to fill the silence.
I also have a dedicated mp3 player. I am an outlier.
1
u/whindonesian Jul 27 '17
I guess it should also be mentioned I'm a college student who is attempting to pay his own tuition and feed himself. I value paying for my education and continued sustenance over supporting a business practice that i disagree with.
5
u/MisterProdigy Jul 28 '17
I mean I'm in the same boat and pay for it. Just say you don't think its worth the money instead of trying to make into something so melodramatic and ethical.
2
u/DolitehGreat Jul 28 '17
Last I checked they offered a discounted price of like $4.99 for signing up with a student email. At least they did when I was in college.

u/leadpoisonedbrad Jul 26 '17
It infuriates me that I share the road with people that text and drive.
9
u/Beingabummer Jul 28 '17
Well you just watched a group of people 'debate' that since fining won't stop it, why bother trying to stop it.
Honestly this is why I stopped watching podcasts. Funhaus is a bunch of good content creators and funny people, but they know just as little as me about policies, crime prevention and traffic laws as me so why the flying fuck am I listening to them talk as if they have a modicum of authority on the matter.
If they are talking about gaming or Youtube or video editing or whatever, sure I attribute them that authority. But listening to them talk on the same level about topics that involve people getting killed by fucknuts that can't take their eyes off their phone for two minutes (Bruce being one of them by the way) goes too far for me.
Also, it's hilarious to me that James didn't seem slightly disturbed by the fact he sees 100% of people on their phones, since being the biker he will absolutely get killed the fastest when he encounters someone like that driving the opposite direction.
The whole 'it won't stop it, so why bother' is honestly the dumbest fucking shit I've heard come out of their mouths, and it diminished my enjoyment of everything else they do. Just Jesus Christ you guys, if you can't make a valid argument just don't fucking talk about stuff like this.
The whole reason you didn't think fining would work seemed to be that you all looked on your phone too and you didn't want to risk getting fined at some point. But fuck all those kids playing on the street right? Or everybody else in traffic for that matter.
And then Lawrence posts a comment under the YT video about how he lost people to distracted driving, but he wanted to adress the hypocrycy that everybody does it so we shouldn't demand nobody does it. THAT'S NOT AN ARGUMENT LAWRENCE. THAT JUST MEANS EVERYBODY NEEDS TO TAKE IT MORE SERIOUSLY.
1
u/JamSa Aug 12 '17
Geez you seem to have a very detailed description of the podcast for someone who doesn't watch podcasts.
23
u/living_food Jul 26 '17
Was this filmed before that girl live-streamed herself killing her sister in a car accident?
4
u/KatyBacon Jul 26 '17
It was filmed on Monday, so ?
23
u/living_food Jul 26 '17 edited Jul 26 '17
hmm, happened Friday but I guess it didn't really become news until Monday. I thought for sure that's what they were going to talk about given the topic. Maybe on the next Hard Nettin'...
24
u/thlastousla Jul 26 '17
I really hope not. Sure you could say she was Hard Nettin' but i really hope the sicko doesn't end up on the segment.
15
u/living_food Jul 26 '17
Oh, I agree. I'd prefer HN stays positive. This feels worse than that woman shooting her husband.
3
Jul 26 '17
In the other case it was more stupidity than anything else. This one is just sick and disgusting.
2
u/CUDesu Jul 27 '17
Fuck, well I wish I didn't look that video up. At least the face was blurred but that was fucked up enough.
75
u/AlexStonehammer Jul 26 '17
I feel like Funhaus's greatest flaw is sometimes when they're trying to be ironically annoying they can miss the mark and just be regular annoying. I think the airhorns at the start we're an example of that.
28
Jul 26 '17
It's not Funhaus as a whole being ironically annoying. It's almost always Lawrence.
50
u/cxrabc Jul 26 '17
I think Adam a lot of times falls into the ironically annoying/sardonic bandwagon.
5
u/Troggie42 Jul 27 '17
Sometimes you get airhorn Lawrence, sometimes you get Nugg Lawrence. I think it more than balances out in his favor.
FWIW IDGAF about the airhorns, it's nbd. I got the joke.

I was at that panel, what did you not like about it? I thought it was all hilarious
11
u/Whoatemysupper Jul 27 '17
He's probably talking about the trigger alert thing. I also didn't think it was that bad. It happened what, like, 3 times total?
5
Jul 27 '17
Shame, the audience answers could have been better but Bruce running around screaming "WHO'S TRIGGERED" was worth it
6
u/AdvocateForTulkas Jul 27 '17
Or people have different tastes and preferences. I'm even referring to stuff I'm not super into that they've done. It seems important to remember they're not "fucking up" something when they do something that doesn't land with you.
Doesn't mean they're immune to criticism either but there's a world of difference between, "I didn't get it" or "I wasn't into it." and something like, "They're going overboard and fucking up the bit." or "It's unfortunate that people enjoy what they're doing there."
5
u/badgarok725 Jul 27 '17
I'll just provide a differing view and I always found the airhorns hilarious. Definitely think there are times that they miss the ironic mark and just come off actually dumb, but for me this wasn't one of those. Usually I find I'm in the minority when I think they miss the mark, but now it looks like I'm in the minority for thinking it worked.
15
u/Pestify Jul 26 '17
I really don't agree that people driving distracted is something that we need to deal with until self driving cars are the norm. As Lawrence said, statistically a smaller proportion of road deaths are caused by distracted driving but it seems terrible to dismiss 3500 deaths a year as "an acceptable statistic". (I'm paraphrasing there).
There needs to be a cultural shift and people being educated in the dangers of driving and texting. I remember in the UK we had an advert where relatives of people who died texting would read the last messages their loved ones ever sent. That stuck with me. Coupled with heavy fines for even looking at my phone, I will not use my phone while driving.
It's the same as when mandatory seat belt laws were introduced. There was a period of stubborn people not adapting but there is now only a small minority of people who's first instinct when getting into a car isn't to put on their seat belt.
Ok maybe I'm not American and don't have to deal with such long drives... but I still don't think driving distracted is something we should just accept.
7
u/Rhaega Jul 26 '17
The advert that stuck with me was the one where the group of girls are in the car, the cat wanders into the other lane. Killing the passengers, and most of a young family in the other car. That's what needs to be rolled out in the States. Shock advertising works, at least for me.
6
u/Pestify Jul 26 '17
Yeah shock advertising is definitely bigger outside of the US. It's like the new cigarette packaging in the UK is designed to shock
6
u/WheelingsAndDealings Jul 27 '17
In Australia, we have fairly shocking ads from the TAC (Transport Accident Commission) about drink driving, speeding, fatigue etc. We also have the cigarette packaging with pictures of gangrenous feet and cancerous lips. Some people might think it's too far but I'm honestly really glad that we actually make a serious effort with advertising to stop needless death, injury and illness.
Here's my favourite TAC ad. It still shocks me when I watch it

I've noticed that on almost all the Dude Soup episodes in recent memory, Lawrence says something along the lines of "we need to talk about x so we can have a certain headline" or "to create controversy". I understand the thought process behind it, but I feel it goes against what makes both the funhaus crew and podcasts in general great.
Funhaus has some of the best chemistry and banter out of any group of creators I've come across, and my favorite moments from dude soup are often a result of conversation that isn't tied to the big gaming news story of the week or whatever. The team is filled with genuinely interesting, funny people that can create entertaining podcasts naturally, without trying to force a certain topic.
I can easily see Dude Soup becoming another fantastic pillar that makes up the great pantheon of entertainment that is Funhaus, but right now it feels more like a product used to push sponsorships. I'm sure there's a lot of factors I'm not privy to that make changing the show really difficult, this is just how I feel as a huge fan of Funhaus that wants to be able to recommend Dude Soup to my friends.
5
u/cxrabc Jul 27 '17
I think it's because they're still trying to "grow" the podcast. I know Lawrence has talked about how they can't just have a podcast where they talk about their personal lives because they haven't yet built up a large, devoted audience over hundreds of episodes.
So I think this leads him into trying to give each Dude Soup a serious, important, or culturally relevant topic to try and draw in new listeners. At least for me I feel like this serves the opposite effect. It might draw in new listeners who see it on their recommendations, but as an older listener I find myself not wanting to listen to their podcasts that dive into anything heavy or serious, because more likely than not, I'll either 1) generally agree with their opinions, which ends up being boring; or 2) they will just do a lot of finger pointing and say "Well, this is just how society it, can't really change that" which is both depressing and annoying depending on the topic.
For the record, one of my favorite podcasts was the one where James talked about his gym horror stories. I wish they would do more stuff like that.
5
u/galacticbearforce Jul 27 '17 edited Jul 27 '17
Yeah I assume analytics show having a topical podcast being the best way to grow, but personally I don't know why a new viewer/listener would listen to an hour of opinions from people they don't know. Don't get me wrong, I'm totally fine with them getting into serious topics or totally trivial little tangents, as long as it isn't forced.
I mean the Drunk Tank started as just a few funny people talking about random bullshit in their lives, and now it's the RT Podcast. Off Topic and CCTV don't need to piggyback off headlines, why should FH? I feel like people will gravitate toward such awesome people just enjoying themselves, and I know the Funhaus team is creative enough to bring their own unique spin on the format. Maybe I'm being too idyllic.
For the record I don't think Dude Soup is horrible or anything, and Lawrence gets a lot of undeserved hate from people as a host. It just doesn't tap into that special juice Funhaus has the way their other content does.
3
u/cxrabc Jul 27 '17
I've really been liking CCTV. Yeah, they have their "gimmick" of filming at various locations, but it's refreshing to just hear them talk about whatever random stuff they want.
2
u/canzosis Jul 28 '17
Interesting.
See, I don't really follow the "I want to know about their personal lives because I see them as my online friends thing."
I can't really KNOW them. But, they seem like intelligent people, so I like getting their take on topics. They're not my actual friends, so I have no interest in their personal lives. They are trying to entertain us as a business entity. Their videos are edited to present a version of themselves that isn't necessarily accurate, just entertaining and funny. And being candid doesn't necessarily sell views and laughs.
Would I be interested in seeing a retrospective of their everyday lives to get to know them more? Sure. But, for example, the RT podcast is boring as hell to me because I have no stakes in their lives. Seems like simulated friendship.
The gym horror story was interesting, because it was a good story. The best comedians tell good stories, right? But that's as far as I would be interested in listening too. Funny and interesting personal stories.
But - I totally understand people feeling differently. Maybe it's just my weird Aspergers stuff talking.
1
u/canzosis Jul 28 '17
Another thing - I personally love getting into topical conversations rather than personal ones with all of my friends and my girlfriend.
Not a popular way to socially interact, I'm well aware, just how I'm wired.

u/xNeurosiis Jul 26 '17
Great podcast (as usual), but I absolutely loved James getting pissed at the people booing Niantic. They're upset the game doesn't work (and rightly so, to a degree), but instead of just stopping, they keep playing, and think that gives them a right to be insufferable assholes.
I played it for a week, got annoyed at it, and deleted it. The end. People throwing shit at developers, or being harassing at all is completely uncalled for and fucked up. Furthermore, and this is a secret, but developers who work crazy hours and devote their lives to their craft, generally aren't out to fuck the game-buying public.
37
u/2ToTooTwoFish Jul 26 '17
Elyse's discomfort in watching the videos of the Pokemon Go Fest was so pure.
14
u/xNeurosiis Jul 26 '17
I honestly don't blame her. I generally like cringe videos since it's like a car wreck (due to eDUIs), but I can't imagine watching that.
3
u/2ToTooTwoFish Jul 26 '17
I generally don't get affected by videos where people embarrass themselves or it is very awkward, but when it's videos where the embarrassment is caused and piled upon by very mean spirited actions, it gets hard to watch. I just get disappointed.
1
u/Simone1995 Jul 26 '17
I'm the same, i love Crowbcat's montages and tried watching this, but it was way too hard and i stopped after 2 minutes.
11
u/dedicated2fitness Jul 26 '17 edited Jul 26 '17
They're upset the game doesn't work (and rightly so, to a degree), but instead of just stopping, they keep playing, and think that gives them a right to be insufferable assholes.
two things - one niantic refunded them BECAUSE they were such assholes about the whole process. there have been tons of events(mostly cons) where the planning was terrible and there was NEVER any refund.
concerts also get similarly rowdy when the artist doesn't show up on time. are concert goers also "entitled" because they paid for an experience and have no assurance of a refund when the experience doesn't happen?
secondly -i'm a developer myself and if my apps don't work i fully expect people to downrate my apps into oblivion. doesn't matter what work i did, the contract i have with users is that my apps ALWAYS work when they download them
otherwise what difference is there between me and some shitty app generator that uses custom built blocks but doesn't quite work and is unstable?
and that's for FREE apps. i get my money through ads and paid upgrades to ad free. if i got charged recurring fees, i'd expect rockstar levels of support and development. not whatever niantic does

u/Troggie42 Jul 27 '17
TBH, as big a shitshow as Pokemon Go was from day one, if anyone DIDN'T see this coming, they should have known better. Damn game barely worked for like six months.
2
u/AdvocateForTulkas Jul 27 '17
I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with giving devs a little bit of shit in a brief comment or something as a fan on the internet, but there's a lot of difference between that and chanting, "make it better now" angrily while the dev tries to talk to you.
6
u/MyAnusBleedsForYou Jul 26 '17
In Australia your phone has to be used entirely hands free, or it must be placed in a commercially-manufactured cradle if you want to place a call, use a GPS or play music. Learners and P1 drivers can't operate phones at all.
23
u/Lioto Jul 26 '17
Lawrence says he wants more views, so.....he keeps playing that annoying horn and starts with a story about a new law regarding driving in California. Some of your audience might not even got a driving licence and most of them don't live in California, but spread all over the world.
I would rather listen to FH opinions on recent released movies like Dunkirk, Planet of the Apes, Valerian, Homecoming...maybe talk about some of the news coming out of Comic Con.
I'm sure that relates more to your video game audience (geek culture), than a news articles about texting and driving.
3
u/Jolzifer1 Jul 26 '17
Statistically speaking, its likely at least one Funhaus community member will die shit posting and driving.
4
u/Mysocksarealive Jul 26 '17

I know movie podcast is next week but Bruce did bring up Dunkirk, and boy was that movie anxiety inducing, the only bad thing I could say about is I felt like I was deaf right after it finished
Ok not gonna lie that Iron Man repulsor sound video made me super like Ivan Dorin a lot, I was all for Keijo Portugal, but James did bring up a good point of KP is still young as a sport and their community is still growing hence they're not ready to be crowned as Hard nettin' champion as of yet.
1
u/anadayviez Jul 26 '17
I absolutely loved Dunkirk, and I personally handled the sound okay, but the whole time I was so aware of how loud it was and how I had my parents next to me who definitely would have found it troubling. Nolan did it on purpose, surely, but I imagine a lot of people would have negative reactions to that aspect of it.
(Then again, this weekend I'm seeing it in IMAX for my second watch, so maybe I hate myself and want to actually go deaf)

Jul 27 '17 edited Jul 27 '17
They've been doing this like 130 episodes, coming up on three years of doing it, longer if you count the IG podcast, but it still doesn't feel like Dude Soup knows what it wants to be. Some days its about social issues, sometimes it's really laser focused on some issue in the gaming industry, sometimes they just shoot the shit and share personal stories, sometimes there's a guest and that episode revolves almost entirely around them with few exceptions of people that really gelled with their chemistry (ETC for instance). movie and general media discussion which used to be a podcast highlight is now almost always nixed because of the movie podcast where they end up talking about something completely different. It's kind of all over the place.
It's all content I enjoy, don't get me wrong, but listening to something like mbmbam or how did this get made or other comparable podcasts really shows how unfocused dude soup is.

Jul 26 '17
Probably an unpopular opinion but:
I'm tired of PewDiePie. Tired of his "controversial" persona and trying too hard to be in the news. He lost me months ago with his Hitler shit (right or wrong I felt like that was pointless tripe) and seeing he is trying to get a rise out of people with Keks (and apparently Alex Jones now too) it makes me happy I gave up.
12
u/Alex2life Jul 26 '17
Tired of his "controversial" persona and trying too hard to be in the news.
Hmm - To me it feels/sounds more like he's tired of it. Cant remember which video it is but there is one where he talks about how he really hates being in articles because often its stuff taken out of context or crazy rumors where they'll just use his name for clickbait.
Imo his latest content feels more relaxes - Its clear he just wants to make content that makes people laugh, if that includes a bit of offensive humor - He'll include that. Doesnt feel like he's making videos to get in the news.

Jul 26 '17
If he was sick of it then stop putting shit like Nazi images or this Kek stuff. He clearly is doing this to get views and people to talking about him. (Which, like right now, he is sadly succeeding with.)
13
u/Alex2life Jul 27 '17
stop putting shit like Nazi images
Iirc the first real nazi thing was as a response to an article calling him a nazi. Some weird East european website reported on basicly nothing, then concluded that he was a nazi. Then he "lived up" to the article by wearing a uniform while clips from one of Hitlers speeches flashed.
This was completely taken out of context which made the whole thing even more ironic since he made that video exactly in response to a silly article.
In regards to the "Death to all jews"-message held up by those two dudes from Fiverr, I get both sides of the argument. I personally found it so absurd that they do this silly dance, then one of them grabs the scroll, then reveals that message... followed by them laughing/smiling - Its fucking absurd that you can pay people for that! - And its pretty clear that Pewdiepie didnt expect them to do it - He says it a couple of times in that video too. He didnt think they'd do it so he wrote a stupid meme etc etc.
I get the other side saying its normalizing hate speech because yeah, it certainly can do that. And you also had some pretty far out people praising him for it, which is really insane. But idk, I felt he made it clear that it was a joke, a stupid one too.
Besides that I cant remember seeing any more nazi stuff - He's made references to the WSJ-deal a couple of times but thats it I think. Anybody seen any nazi imagery in his recent videos, please let me know, I might be wrong.

Jul 26 '17 edited Jul 26 '17
I find it odd how Lawrence didn't mention that the "Kekistani" flag is based on the nazi iron cross flag.
But yeah, it's just a le dank meme. Ignore the fact that a lot of the people that use it are horrible people. Ignore the fact the pewdiepie has an audience of millions of kids that will now think ironic nazi symbolism and making jokes about killing all jews is cool. The nazi stuff on /pol/ started off being ironic too, but now the place is full of actual white nationalists.
But I guess according to him I'm just a dumb kid on reddit making mountains out of mole hills and he's an enlightened centrist. Ten years ago that kind of shit was relegated to the darkest corners of the web and now it's so normalized that people like him just write it off as, well normal I guess, to see it in the most popular internet celebrities videos. To see it all the time on twitter, reddit, and youtube is just normal now.
God, this is exactly why I don't watch Dude Soup often. The way they talk about politics and social issues just annoys me. I should just stick to skipping over that stuff.
18
Jul 26 '17 edited Jul 26 '17
Well I wouldn't go that far (like patrionizing Lawrence). I didn't get that notion we were "dumb" for thinking this is serious.
But I do agree this is becoming a problem. A bunch of younger kids or teenagers are seeing this stuff and find it normal. Especially from sources like 4chan or influential YouTubers/celebrities. I am really worried what the future is gonna hold if we don't reign this shit in soon.
12
u/Alex2life Jul 26 '17
The nazi stuff on /pol/ started off being ironic too, but now the place is full of actual white nationalists.
I feel like this has happened to several "meme"/"funny jokes"-sites over the last couple of years.
Used to waste a lot of time on Funnyjunk but leading up to the election and ever since Trump was elected it became very clear that most of the users weren't doing funny jokes.... they were rather serious when they made offensive/racist comments.
I used to love that kind of ironic stuff but after experiencing that, I've kinda become more conscious about who's saying/commenting that kind of stuff.
Funhaus making an offensive joke - No problem, its clearly a joke. Random user on the internet making an offensive comment - I don't know if its serious or a joke.
5
u/Troggie42 Jul 27 '17
There were allegations that actual white nationalist groups use sites like 4chan as recruiting, or at the very least try to influence and steer discussions to bring people on board of their way of thinking... I don't think any of this kind of thing is a coincidence.
5
u/cxrabc Jul 26 '17
I feel like if someone is going to see a dumb post on /pol/ and actually base their political philosophy off of it then that person is too far gone anyway.
I mean, what are you going to do but laugh at that? I don't think that the kekistani "movement" is anything more than a dumb continuation of the attack helicopter meme. Is it stupid? Sure, but I don't think that just because it shows up a lot on youtube and reddit and twitter it should be worrisome.
It's not like those places are a good representation of society.
2
u/Alex2life Jul 27 '17
I feel like if someone is going to see a dumb post on /pol/ and actually base their political philosophy off of it then that person is too far gone anyway.
Completely agree!
The problem is when its not just a few shitposts but almost floods of political shitposts that are very one-sided. Mentioned Funnyjunk in another comment here and that side got flooded with Trump posters.
At first it was some silly shitposts, then "fuck Hillary" stuff, then more serious political posts and when I got enough and left the site it was basicly a trump propaganda website, filled with those kind of people that praise him as a god....
It started with silly posts but I'm pretty sure that they ended up changing the political opinions of a lot of the userbase. Pretty sure it wouldnt have gotten so popular there otherwise.
2
Jul 27 '17 edited Jul 27 '17
The nazi stuff on /pol/ started off being ironic too,
Sorry but I have to correct this as someone who was actually around at the time. /pol/ was made as a clean slate to replace /new/ because that board was overrun with racism and stormfronters. When /pol/ was created all the racists who took over /new/ literally just moved to a new board. The unabashed promotion of nazi ideology has been a part of pols identity since its inception.

I mean, from a business perspective I think what he's doing is smart. People are eventually going to get tired of the hyper screaming gameplays that made him famous. Hell, he might've even got bored or making them.
Now, however, there's a pretty big market online for the "fuck SJWS, FREE SPEECH!, fuck the MSM" mentality. He can still make some good money by capitalizing on that. I think he's transitioned into it pretty well.
From a personal perspective: I never watched him in the past and I'm still not interested now; but to each his own.
3
Jul 26 '17 edited Jul 26 '17
I get what your saying and financially it makes sense. (Hell, a ton of NORMAL youtubers did their best to either pretend they hate MSM/WSJ or go after that crowd of Trump lovers.)
But it doesn't make for fun content and eventually you start to turn into something your not. I honestly believe Felix is at that point now where going this route is becoming the new normal for him. Also, you are showing a bunch of youngsters this side of life which I find really reprehensible.
2
u/Alex2life Jul 26 '17
Now, however, there's a pretty big market online for the "fuck SJWS, FREE SPEECH!,
With all the talk about horseshoe theory in regards to politics, I'd argue its also relevant in the SJW vs anti-SJW discussion.
Imo the anti-SJW people just keep piling on, not realizing they're actually being just as silly as the crazy SJW people.
1
u/Ritcheyz Jul 27 '17
The 'crazy SJW people' such as the people who identify with attack helicopters never existed. They were scapegoats created by GG/4chan to discredit the original Social Justice movement.
2
u/cxrabc Jul 27 '17
While I think you are right that the "I am a dragonmoon wolfbeast, please recognize my identity" type of people have been largely blown out of proportion, there are indeed crazy people on "the left" (whatever that means).
You just need to look at something like /r/gamerghazi or certain parts of twitter to see that.
That being said, I'm not trying to say that they are more or less prevalent than crazies on "the right", I just want to acknowledge that both exist. And if I'm being honest, neither has had any impact on my life other than me searching out for some crazy internet posts.
1
u/dedicated2fitness Jul 26 '17
Hell, he might've even got bored or making them.
he was indeed floundering for content ATT. now he gets tons of views for making videos poking fun at leftist/right wing memes. he doesn't have to play another hundred hours of happy wheels like markiplier anymore
13
u/cxrabc Jul 26 '17
I know it was only a small bit at the beginning of the podcast, but did anyone else feel like it was sort of irresponsible for them to drop that dude's actual twitter handle?

In my opinion, when you decide to post something outrageous on social media, you have to accept the reactions to it being tied to your identity. Freedom of speech to say what you want doesn't mean freedom from consequence when others find it abhorrent.

Very true. However, FH naming his account on the podcast is broadcasting it to thousands of people who may not have seen it otherwise.
It's why you redact names on subreddits like /r/iamverysmart or /r/facepalm or /r/forwardsfromgrandma. The people that see the initial post are entitled to respond however they want to the guy, but bringing in a large outside audience that wouldn't have otherwise even known about the post sort of rubs me the wrong way.

They definitely shouldn't have mentioned the guy's username. The guy may have come across as an asshole but he didn't say anything truly horrible. Even if he did I don't really think Funhaus is in the position to be sending their fans after these people, whether intentional or not they [Funhaus] must be aware what will happen when they do something like that.

I felt like they did that on purpose so he could get some "internet justice"

That's exactly my issue with it. That sort of thing reminds me of that girl who made a tweet about getting AIDS before she got on a plane to Africa and when she landed she had a shit ton of hate and "internet justice" coming her way. While a distasteful joke (and honestly it's a very Funhaus style of joke), I don't know if the reaction it got is correct, you know?
Same thing with this Wonder Woman dude. They could've made fun of his shitty hot take without giving away his name.

Responsibility that content creators with a large audience have for their audience's potential actions is something FH has talked about in the past (see the Dude Soup about Pewdiepie). It might be smarter to mitigate any potential doxxing or brigading if possible. You don't need to know the dude's name to make fun of his tweet or his views.

does driving just get old as you age? i would much rather drive and not use my phone, but the FH doods seem tired of it and would rather have phones. but i also just got my license a few months ago so is it a time thing?

I'm 31, I'd rather drive and not use my phone as well. I mean, I do for changing music and shit, but I'm pretty hardline on not using it while driving, unless I'm in horrendous stopped traffic that ain't going anywhere, then I might fire off some messages to people, but as a rule I don't do it if I'm not stuck in a jam.

I'm almost 25, and it just hit me this year.
So yeah. Probably depends if you're a car guy though

I'm quite surprised to see them just shrug off the Jake Paul drama of recent with "he's a cool guy" and then move on. A lot of the stuff he's been doing recently is incredibly unprofessional and gives youtubers/online content creators a bad image. It's as if they purposely ignored that stuff when mentioning him parting with Disney

I figured they were being sarcastic - surely any sane person finds him beyond cringe-worthy and a part of why society looks like it is failing.
He's revealed personal information through the buying of merch for PostMalone (I think that's his name) and starts massive fires in fucking LA where a cigarette could burn the city down.
He threatens his neighbors and records them, even though he's constantly disrupting their neighborhood.
These are just a few of his beyond cringe worthy antics.

On the Doctor Who thing right at the beginning, no, it wasn't "just a few guys". It was thousands of angry manchildren. Just look at the /r/KotakuinAction thread about it and really any thread about it on reddit and anything about it on twitter. Obviously most people are cool with it, but there were a lot of very angry manbabies letting out their impotent rage all over the internet over it.
These hateful, misogynistic babies are a big problem in "nerd" culture, and ignoring them and downplaying their existence isn't gonna make them go away. It just allows them to fester unchallenged.

KiA is pretty self contained though. no one is forcing directors/writers/artists to read KiA. the reason tweets are damaging are that they get read by the artists and then they do have to engage SOME of them. honestly anyone can make a twitter account, don't you think there should be hundreds of highly upvoted tweets about the whole thing like the whole ghostbusters thing?
i don't think anyone actually cares, it's just a couple of shit stirrers stirring shit coz it's an easy narrative2

sarkeesian(who is anti gamer gate iirc) even complained about how the doctor isn't black or transgender. just the shit stirrers...2

KiA seemed to mostly be laughing at all the journalists jumping on the tiniest scraps of outrage so they could try and make a story out of it. I imagine most people who care about Doctor Who are hoping the writing improves now that Moffat is leaving.

What's so bad about it? I haven't seen anything unreasonable come from there, though I don't go on there all that often.

u/Troggie42 Jul 28 '17
It used to be about discussing how shitty games journalism was, now it's just an anti-sjw news hugbox with some mild journalism shit peppered in here and there.

I never thought I'd see the day where Funhaus cited my hometown newspaper as a source.

Here in the UK age of consent is 16, I expect to see Bruce on the prowl at RTX London. It's worth noting that age of consent in Austria, Italy and Germany is 14.
