Made an app to help drivers find break spots

Finds laybys, public parking, toilets and rest stops near your location; now on both iPhone and Android. Works offline too if you've downloaded the area in your Maps app.

Just pushed an update with improvements based on early feedback.

Free to download: search "Respite Driver - Layby Finder" on the App Store or Google Play.

Let me know if you find it useful or have any suggestions!

People Who Drive Cargo Vans for a Living: How Did You Get Started?

Hey everyone,
I’m 19 years old and based in Denver, Colorado. I’ve been thinking seriously about getting into cargo van work because I enjoy driving and want to build something for myself.

I’m still learning about the industry, so I apologize if some of these questions sound basic. I’d rather learn from people who are actually doing this than get information from random websites.

My situation is pretty simple: I’m willing to buy a cargo van, get the proper insurance, and put in the work. What I don’t understand is how people actually start getting loads and making money.
A few questions:

Is it realistic for a 19-year-old to get started in this business?

Are there companies or contracts that hire drivers under 21?

If I stay within Colorado, are there still age restrictions?

How do cargo van owners find their first customers or contracts?

Do most people use load boards, dispatchers, apps, or work directly with companies?

What type of insurance should I be looking into?
If you were in my position today, what would be your first step?

I’m not looking for a get-rich-quick thing. I’m just trying to learn, work hard, and build a reliable income. I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has experience with cargo vans, courier work, medical deliveries, local freight, or anything similar.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. Any advice is appreciated!

Does this exist? Idea for Swiggy/Zomato: "Micro-Radius Merchant Delivery" for ultra-short distances (<500m)📋

Hey everyone,

Ever tried ordering food from a restaurant just 2-3 buildings away because you were too sick to walk, injured, or stuck in meetings?

Currently, the app still assigns a dedicated rider. This wastes fuel, keeps riders stuck on tiny payouts, and delays your food.

🛑 The Problem

Assigning a delivery agent for a 2-minute walking distance is a waste of manpower, fuel, and time during peak hours.

💡 The Solution: "Micro-Radius Merchant Delivery"

If an order is under 500 meters, the app pings the restaurant: "Customer is X meters away. Want your staff to walk this over?"

  • The Incentive: The restaurant gets a share of the saved delivery fee.
  • The Execution: A restaurant waiter walks it over during off-peak hours when dine-in orders are slow.

📈 Why everyone wins (The 4 Happy List):

  1. 😊 Customer Happy: Gets piping hot food in minutes, especially helpful when unwell or unable to step out.
  2. 🛵 Delivery Agent Happy: Stays free to take longer, higher-paying deliveries instead of micro-trips.
  3. 🏪 Shop Owner Happy: Earns extra margin by utilizing existing floor staff for quick errands.
  4. 📱 App Platform Happy: Saves precious rider supply and reduces its carbon footprint.

📝 Note on Current Tech Stack

I know platforms have various "self-delivery" setups for restaurants, and I am not 100% sure if a hyper-local walking trigger like this already exists in some beta phase or internal roadmap. However, I preferred to share this exact use case anyway because a dynamic, distance-automated prompt like this would be a game-changer for accessibility and logistics efficiency.

Is this logistically possible for Swiggy or Zomato to build? Let's discuss!

Responses needed for research study !!!!! 🙏🙏🙏

Hey everyone! I am doing an academic research project on how delivery apps use screen timers, pop-up alerts, and hidden drop-off locations to push us into taking orders and how this affects our actual hourly earnings.

If you have a few minutes, could you please fill out this quick survey? Your answers are completely confidential and anonymized.

Note: Sharing your name is totally optional, but providing your email is required so we can verify unique responses and send you a copy of the final research results when we finish! Any data provided will be used for research purposes only

Here is the link to the survey: https://forms.gle/vVaeXJwCt4bFf8iE9

Thank you so much for your time and stay safe out there!

Delivery riders: who are you on the phone with? I genuinely want to know.

Many delivery riders I meet with my food are mid-conversation usually in a foreign language. Bluetooth earpiece, phone in the helmet strap, hands-free through the handlebars … doesn’t matter. Someone is nearly always talking to someone.

So I have to ask: who’s on the other end? Family? A friend? Some kind of permanent open line between riders across the city? Genuinely curious.

Hi all, I just got signed up to deliveroo and I got my own referral code: MU1226787

there are conditions (have to deliver 10 orders within 30 days usually) and there are only specific areas that allow you to sign up with a referral code.

I'll link the page to see if you're in an area where you can use my code and make a little extra money if you're planning on signing up anyways!

I built a route planner for delivery and truck drivers in Israel. Looking for honest feedback.

I'm a truck driver from Israel and got tired of juggling addresses, parking notes, unloading spots, and route planning across multiple apps. So I started building BigDrive. Current features: • Multi-stop route planning • Route optimization • Driver parking locations near delivery points • Parking time and vehicle length information • Quick navigation to stops The screenshots show the current version. My goal is simple: save drivers time and reduce parking headaches. What feature would be most useful for you as a delivery or truck driver? Any honest feedback is welcome.

Some days delivery driving feels like you’re just trying to keep up with the city itself

Anyone else feel like the job is less about driving and more about constantly adjusting to whatever the day decides to throw at you?

Had one of those shifts recently where everything started normal. First few drops went fine, traffic was moving, and I actually thought it would be an easy day for once.

Then one delay just kind of snowballed into everything else. A blocked street, a wrong pin on an order, a customer not picking up, and suddenly I’m rerouting the whole day just trying to stay on track. By the time I noticed, I was already behind schedule without doing anything wrong exactly.

You start noticing things more when you’re out there all day. City buses cutting through traffic like they own the road, people double parking for, and everyone acting like delivery drivers are invisible until something is late.

I even had a moment sitting in the van waiting for access to a building, scrolling through orders and thinking how different logistics look depending on where things come from. Some routes feel smooth like they were planned well, others feel like they were built on assumptions. I’ve seen people talk about Amazon systems versus Ebay sellers versus Alibaba shipping chains, and it honestly all feels connected once you’re the one trying to make it work in real time.

What I’m still trying to figure out is how experienced drivers keep their routes from mentally wearing them down. Do you just get used to the chaos, or do you actually find ways to make it smoother over time?

Illinois - Recent email/in-app notification from Uber

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Crossposting - Apologies, if it got duplicated. First time trying it, this way.

## **Stop and Read: What Uber's Email About "SB 2906" Is NOT Telling You**

Uber sent out an email/app message with the subject **"Tell Springfield: Don't risk ride share jobs for special interests"** claiming a bill in Illinois could "put thousands of ride share jobs on the line," get drivers "kicked off the app," reduce earnings, and "destroy flexible work."

**Here's what the bill actually is—and why Uber doesn't want you to know the details.**

***

### **What Bill Is This?**

It's **Senate Bill 2906 (SB 2906)** — the **Illinois Transportation Network Driver Labor Relations Act** (aka the "Rideshare Drivers' Union Bill").

**What it does:**
- Gives ~100,000 Illinois rideshare drivers the **right to form a union** and collectively bargain with Uber/Lyft
- Drivers **remain independent contractors** (NOT employees)
- Sets up **industry-wide bargaining** on pay, benefits, safety, and deactivation appeals
- If negotiations stall after 210 days, **binding arbitration** forces a contract
- **Voluntary membership** — you don't have to join the union or pay dues to work

***

### **Uber's Claims vs. Reality**

**Uber claims:** "Drivers could get kicked off the app"
**Reality:** The bill *requires an appeals process* for deactivation. Currently, Uber can deactivate you without explanation or recourse.

**Uber claims:** "Reduce earnings"
**Reality:** The bill mandates bargaining over *compensation*. Most drivers currently earn *under $8/hour after vehicle costs*.

**Uber claims:** "Destroy flexible work"
**Reality:** You *keep independent contractor status*. No set shifts. You can work whenever you want.

**Uber claims:** "Thousands of jobs on the line"
**Reality:** No mechanism eliminates jobs. Similar law passed in *Massachusetts* — drivers formed a union, platforms kept operating.

**Uber claims:** "Special interests"
**Reality:** The "special interests" are *drivers* organized by the Illinois Drivers Alliance (driver-led coalition).

***

### **The Real Reason Uber Opposes This**

The bill would:
- **Force Uber to negotiate** on pay and benefits
- **Limit Uber's ability** to deactivate drivers without due process
- **Require better safety standards**
- **Reduce Uber's profit margins** by requiring better compensation

In short: **This would cost Uber money and reduce their control** — not because it hurts drivers, but because it would force them to treat drivers better.

***

### **Important Context: Uber's Position Changed**

In **December 2025**, Uber publicly agreed **not to oppose** this bill after years of driver organizing — a "historic breakthrough" according to the Illinois Drivers Alliance.

So either:
1. Uber's leadership is running a conflicting messaging campaign despite that commitment, OR
2. They're opposing **specific language added later**, OR
3. They're trying to scare drivers into lobbying against a bill they previously agreed to support

***

### **The Bottom Line**

This bill gives drivers **collective bargaining power** without eliminating independent contractor status. It adds **deactivation protections**, mandates **pay negotiations**, and requires **safety improvements**.

**What Uber stands to lose:** Unilateral control over pay, deactivation, and working conditions — and higher profit margins.

**What drivers stand to gain:** A voice in negotiations, better pay, deactivation appeals, and safety protections — while keeping flexible hours.

***

### **What to Do If You Got This Email**

  1. **Read the actual bill text** before calling legislators: [SB 2906 Bill Status](https://www.ilga.gov/Legislation/BillStatus?DocTypeID=SB&DocNum=2906&LegID=165253)

  2. If you're worried about your job, understand: **This won't eliminate jobs**. It gives you bargaining power.

  3. If Uber says "special interests," ask: **Special interests doing what?** Making drivers earn less than $8/hour a special interest?

  4. **Contact your legislator** with your own informed opinion, not Uber's talking points.

***

**Sources:** Illinois Senate Democrats, Illinois Drivers Alliance, Chicago Tribune, Capitol News Illinois, WTTW, CBS Chicago

***

**TL;DR:** Uber is trying to scare drivers into opposing a bill that would give us union rights, pay bargaining, and deactivation protections — while keeping our independent contractor status and flexible hours. The bill helps drivers; it costs Uber money and control. Read the bill before you call your legislator.
