Heard a lovely story on the radio today about Ogbene reaching out to a father and son who are going through a tough time and asked to meet up with them . He just happened to be listening to their story and reached out of his own accord . Top bloke and massive respect to him.

I remember a post on this sub years ago from a dad asking if Ogbene would be a good player to get on his son's new shirt.

This was just after Kenny had given him his debut. He may have had a handful of caps but im pretty certain he was still in league 1 and this sub was kind of saying "he seems like a good lad but mightnt stay in the Irish team long"

Its great to see him as one of our stars the past few years. Always has a smile on his face. Not the most talented player but makes up for it with pure effort. Brilliant at just winning free kicks and moving us up the pitch. I always think one of Kenny's better decisions was calling him up early and giving him lots of gametime. More old fashioned managers would have ignored him until he was a prem player.

Every video I see Cheo seems to be the heart of this squad, smiling, joking, pushing lads.

His form was terrible after his Achilles injury but Heimir stuck with him and his form came back despite not getting club games.

He’s a reflection of how far this squad have come. He’s seems a brilliant fella and that story doesn’t surprise me. Serious feel good factor with this squad now.

I genuinely he think he will be President some day.

He’s one of the nicest people ever honestly, he met the whole family and all to hear what they’ve been through and give them a nice moment to remember throughout their hardships. He’s a brilliant lad very caring

Excited to see the subs

Would love to see Umeh & Melia get some minutes tonight in front of a home crowd & share the pitch with a legend like Coleman

I think it is both true that it is important for players to play together and have a consistent system, so we continue get better and better at it, and it being quite ridiculous to play a back 5 with Coleman and Scales at wingback against a team like Qatar.  I mean realistically this could be Coleman's farewell and Scales wouldn't be 1st choice in this type of game usually but still

surely a change of keeper for the second half. excited to see these lads

Not sure. Heimer said its Kelleher vs Qatar and Travers vs Canada

so much for building as much depth as possible.

3 games, 4 different goal keepers playing. Thats depth

No complaints from me, hopefully putting Jamie back in the midfield 2 is a sign they'll do the same with one of the other 10s like Azaz or Moran come September

Back 5 ehh.  That Portugal "up and over" win has gone to our head...

Ah just give them a rest Heimir

11

u/EdwardBigby 6d ago

He is. A lot of the senior players arent going to the away game in Canada so hes playing them in thr home friendly before releasing them

u/WinterStandard2731 6d ago

Kelleher, scales, obrien, O’Shea, molumby, parrott, Collins played most games for club and country this year. Surely they deserve a rest and we can see more of the new faces

They’re putting together a nice little unbeaten run that has to be good for the atmosphere around the camp. I can see why he would want to protect that. Try to put the game to bed and then give the new/er lads the last half an hour or so.

I think having an unbeaten run in friendlies is kind of irrelevant though, the Macedonia game was so frustrating it was a boring lineup and a boring game. With new lads only given 30 minutes or so. I’d much rather see the new lads get 90 minutes and lose 3-0 than a 0-0 with ageing players in a meaningless friendly. Maybe that’s just me🤷‍♂️

Can always just watch the under 21s at that point but given their attendances vs the first team, I think its fair to say that most people attending the game would like to see a decent team

Try explaining to a 10 year old why Troy Parrott isnt playing

U21 is a completely different standard to first team mate. Thats why players need to be given minutes to adapt to first team football. Who knows in the future if all our centre forwards are injured and Melia is thrown in with no experience in an Ireland shirt in a big game. It would obviously help them break into the first team at club also if their national team can show faith in them.

u/EdwardBigby 6d ago

My point is that if youre just starting all the young lads then the first team suddenly isnt a very different standard than under 21s

2

u/WinterStandard2731 6d ago

Um yes it is? Obviously Qatar senior team would be more competitive and technically better than their u21 side. They have bigger expectations to live up to and are under more pressure, see how they fare. Was no harm giving parrott his debut at 17, fared well didn’t it.

And both Melia and Umeh will get their debits either tonight more against Canada

Which is why most of them will probably not go to Canada. The rest of the world is about to start training intensely for 2 months of non stop football at the end of their season. These lads are probably playing 45-60 minutes against Qatar in a friendly. They'll be fine.

People always get annoyed at first team players because they want to get hyped about squad players and young lads but it never hurts to play your first team players. Its not like they play together every week. They still improve as a team the more they play.

It also helps the other lads who are starting today. Seeing Moylan playing with the first team lads is going to be a lot more telling and beneficial than when we have our B team out.

But don't worry. Over the 3 games this summer, Heimer will have played about 50 different lads. Hes given out loads of opportunities and will have learnt a lot from training alone. Hes said that a more experimental side will travel to Canada

I think there’s a balance to be had between continuing to build the continuity amongst the senior/regular players & blooding new/younger guys. I think the senior players not travelling to Montreal tries to make that balance

Your point is valid though about some guys having played a lot of minutes this season for club & country.

1

u/WinterStandard2731 6d ago

Do you seen much balance in this lineup ?

1

u/Galway1012 Paul McGrath 6d ago

Over the course of 2 games, yes.

1

u/Mic_Oxlong 6d ago

4 center backs, how is he gonna line then up?

5

u/NandoFlynn 6d ago

Same as the other games?

1

u/EdWoodwardsPA 6d ago

Scales, O'Shea and O'Brien have all played fullback before

1

u/rayhoughtonsgoals Paul McGrath 6d ago

Coleman RWB, Scales LWB.

On attack Coleman joins midfield and JOB covers right.

It's a bit conservative

1

u/WhizzyWizard1895 6d ago

Scales lwb as he was against Hungary and others.

u/Horse-Patient 6d ago

Where is Harvey Vale? Is he not interested now since we didn’t qualify?

Anyone who’s actually watched the team the last 5 years has seen the lows. This is not one of them. Lots of bright new faces in a squad that’s building something

3

u/Otherwise-Macaron939 6d ago

It's hardly our fault that European qualification is extremely difficult.

6

u/VoteYourOssoff 6d ago

Asian qualification is just alot easier. Europe is a gauntlet in comparison
