I like how they managed to balance Shiori's 'empathy' with her being an insensitive yokai. When the plot twist with her blood came up, I was afraid it would follow the "oh I secretly harbor so many feelings and I'm not actually a monster" schematic. But she sees Hinako as some kind of property, something that is positive for Shiori, and acts accordingly to protect her own interests.

I really don't agree with this at all. Shiori clearly doesn't want to be a monster, or being called one by Hinako wouldn't have hurt her so much; she just believes that this is the only way she can be.

I agree with your take. It’s like how I took Shiori calling everyone at the zoo meat last episode as a defense mechanisms. That whole date she was jealous of Miko for really understanding humans. She wants to get there because of Hinako, but doesn’t know the right way
