I've done this in games where you can allocate points whenever you want. If you're already massively OP, adding more points isn't going to noticeably affect the majority of your gaming experience. Just saving them up can be a matter of not wanting to bother with them, or it can be strategic. Using them all up means you can't specifically tilt your build to a specific purpose if an emergency arises or you get inspiration to try something quirky (there are a lot of stat-based games that don't allow you to reset builds).
