To be fair, one of them is flying is Mav's MS, and the other one is flying the vehicle he apparently put a lot of dev time into, so he's getting to relive his favorite thing with his favorite person vicariously.

On the plus side, it means that when the kids finally do need a way to leave Side 6 due to politics/personal issues/etc they've got a mega-fan ready to cart them on their way.

Well, to be fair, His team didn't have enough firepower to fight against 2 gundams piloted by Newtypes, so that is why he was content with gathering info and just asked for backup this episode.
