Resolved I was laid off and am waiting to be paid unemployment; if I get a crappy job in the meantime and then quit, can I collect benefits again on my current claim?

It's hard to interview for a job if I'm working full time at a not-great job (as I understand is the case for many people).

If I get a crappy full-time job to tide me over until the unemployment office pays me, can I quit and still collect unemployment on my open claim? (So I can go back to interviewing for a job in my actual field?)

Or would quitting my new job disqualify me from claiming any additional weeks?

Resolved Denied Training Benefits-Dislocated Worker Question

I'm currently collecting UI benefits and also applied for Training Benefits and enrolled in a ETF approved certificate program. But I was denied TB for not being considered a "dislocated worker". I'm appealing. But before I do, I hope someone more experienced in the nuances of this vague statute to clarify what is defined as a dislocated worker per the Washington State law:

(2) With respect to claims with an effective date on or after July 1, 2012, "dislocated worker" means any individual who:

(a) Has been involuntarily and indefinitely separated from employment as a result of a permanent reduction of operations at the individual's place of employment, has separated from a declining occupation, has separated from employment as a result of chapter 179, Laws of 2018, or has separated from employment as a result of the denial of commercial finfish net pen aquaculture lease renewal applications or the issuance of order number 202211 by the commissioner of public lands on November 17, 2022; and

(b) Is eligible for or has exhausted entitlement to unemployment compensation benefits.."

If my job position was permanently eliminated due to company cost cutting measures, would that qualify as as dislocated worker? Or would the actual job site have to shut down and cease operations to be considered "dislocated worker'?

Resolved Help with overpayment that

Hey so I been filling for claims for the last three weeks smh. And while that was happening I had to resolve bunch of issues on my old claim from like 2 years ago and while all of it has been fixed I was finally awaiting for my payment cause I got approved. It’s been 3 days waiting to deposit and that’s to soon to be worried but since I been on the phone with them for every week straight I decided to call them, everything is great they just told me to wait so I was like ok! Then last night 10pm I get a lovely email saying I owe 684$ that I haven’t even received and they haven’t sent me money so I never got paid to began with. Has anyone had issues ? I am gonna call Monday but I was wondering if I am no longer eligible for whatever reason. I already verified my identity and they’re asking again for whatever reason but I am just so confused rn.

Resolved Incorrect initial filing week and current adjudication

Should I attempt to take on the Herculean task of contacting customer service if I learned too late that I should have waited until the Sunday after I was fired to file my initial claim?

After a whole alternative base year debacle, I was given a weekly and total determination, so I thought I was approved. The first week was denied for excess earnings, all good. The past two weeks of claims are pending and I see that I was put in adjudication a few days ago. I have no problem waiting out the adjudication, even if I can only speculate what it's about.

But is it worth the effort to try to call so I can correct my initial mistake of filing right away or will that work itself out?

Resolved UI eligibility for federal employees terminated for performance despite "outstanding" performance evals

I'm a federal employee that is currently still employed, but I worry that I'm going to be imminently terminated in a mass firing of federal probationary employees. Many of my fellow federal colleagues shared that they were told they were fired because of poor performance. However, those same people had "achieved outstanding" performance evaluations. There's obviously a political element to the claim that these federal workers were poor performers.

I'm wondering if ESD would consider me at fault for this reason for termination? Said another way, if my former employer says that I was terminated because of my performance — despite the fact that I have "achieved outstanding" performance evals and have received several awards — would I be found ineligible for UI?

I tried calling ESD several times to ask about this but wasn't able to get through. I'll continue trying and will update this post if I hear anything directly from them.

Resolved SAW

u/SoThenIThought_ I am registered with SAW, but it asks me to set up a Workforce WA account. For various reasons, I do not want to set up a Workforce account. Is it necessary for me to set it up?

Also, next Tuesday will be 10 days since I filed. No escalations, but my case is pretty straight forward. When I send in the PDF to the senator's office, do I need to attach any supporting documents since I already supplied the supporting documents to unemployment when I filed (position eliminated and 9 years with the company and in very good standing)? I was laid off.

Thanks.

Resolved No job search forms available

I have records of my job searching (at min 3/week) but no links to the weekly forms to provide that data since Nov 30.

I was approved, seems once you read the alert it can’t be found again…. Anyway, I was approved and received the back pay from Sept- Dec. I have had no links to weekly job searching forms for all of December- current and I thought maybe bc I’m approved I don’t have to complete forms?
Something doesn’t feel right.

Resolved Are these hours/wages for calculating my "base year" forfeit because too much time has passed?

Benefit History:

  • In Summer 2023, I applied for benefits.
  • These benefits (as in $) ran out in February 2024.
  • The benefit "year" for this claim ended in July 2024

Hours

  • In 2023, I worked 720 hours (not applied towards previous claim).
  • In 2024, I worked 48 hours total.
  • in 2025, I worked 329 hours in Q1, and 50 hours so far in Q2.

Based on this information, am I currently ineligible for unemployment in Washington? Are all those 2023 hours/wage forfeit because too much time has passed?

Resolved Fired due to misconduct, claim been disqualified twice

Reason why I was fired: first was on admission leave due to a co-worker reporting me out of spite to HR for a disagreement we’ve had. A week later after meetings with HR (weed was never brought up) They claimed there was “suspicion of drug use” to initiate a drug test but ive never smoked at work nor had management talk to me regarding ever smelling like weed/working high + evidence of smoking on property. I tested positive for weed, Found out Company secretly changed policy (but didn’t tell anyone already employed) that it’s a 0 drug tolerance (while I was already employed) but when I started the job it was NOT a requirement nor did I have to test to start working. So I end up getting fired for the drug test & the reasoning says “misconduct”.

I’ve applied for unemployment and filing weekly claims, which has been denied twice saying disqualified. I don’t know what to do or even start.

Resolved Multiple "Adjudication in progress" at the same time?

Hi all,

Got booted from a place at the end of June. I filed on the Friday as that was the day I had the "we're firing you" meeting, but my "termination" signing letter didn't come through until the following week (the place is extremely badly run and HR "delays" are very common)

As a result I got thrown into adjudication. Though weirdly I have three pending adjudication issues? One for July 5th, one for July 14th and one for July 17th

Per a post I found from /u/SoThenIThought_ I went and uploaded documentation proving I was fired to all 3 of them. But they're still stuck over a week later?

Do I need to get my case escalated because of the bizarre nature of it?

Thanks!

Resolved WA paid medical leave - outpatient mental health leave?

Hey! So, I was unsure where to post this. I decided that it was best to try here than not try at all.

My girlfriend is dealing with a lot of stress and mental health issues. On top of this, she forgot to take her meds for too many days in a row and now has to work back up to her original dose. This is obviously affecting her as well.

She is wondering if it is possible to take medical leave for mental health without having to be institutionalized in a hospital setting. She has gone to the hospital before, and it has helped her, but currently she is rather sure that going currently would probably make her feel very isolated.

On the website, it mentions mental health, but it is rather vague in its coverage. It mentions inpatient services, but not outpatient. We are working to get her a therapist, but her doctor will also do any paperwork needed in the meantime.

So, if anyone knows anything that might help, please let me know. Thank you :)

EDIT - If you are looking for more details and information, I suggest you read the comments, as I have an answer for my question and of some other situations people have had. If there is something you wish for me to clarify or you have a question not answered below, leave a comment and I will try to get back to you in a timely manner.

Resolved 401k withdrawal question???

Does a person have to report a one-time 401k withdrawal when filing a weekly claim? One of the questions ask if there’s been a change in a monthly retirement pension. But a 401k plan that’s just sitting there, not being drawn out of on a monthly basis, isn’t a monthly retirement pension in my opinion. Am I right?

Resolved Approval on benefit question

Resolved Unsure how to fill out the employment entry regarding some paid union training events I went to

So I got suspended from work without being given a reason, so I'm applying for unemployment. The application asked for information about my job, and I filled that in fine, but then it wants information about my union being my "employer" because I'm shop steward and went to a couple one day training events where I received a $150 stipend for each one

I've tried searching for answers, but unfortunately including "training" or "union" in the query gets results for apprenticeship programs and such, which these weren't. I don't know what reason to select for why I separated from the employer, because they're not really a proper employer and they were just one day paid trainings a few months apart. And I don't know how to fill out the wages portion because it was $150 per event/day and there's no option for that, and I don't know how to fill out average hours per week. Both trainings were 5hrs each, but that's 10 hours total over like 4 months. So it's either 5 hours average, but that males it look like I worked a lot more than I did, or something super tiny because it's spread out. My union rep said to put 0 or .5hrs but it won't let me put 0 or a decimal

The one thing I do think I know how to fill out for it is the first and last day I went to the trainings are probably the start/end dates for the period of "employment"

Any help would be appreciated, and thanks in advance

Resolved Need financial help while waiting for treatment

I got let go from my job (I am a server). I am waiting for a bed in a treatment center. I was in a mental hospital for a week and my psychiatrist and therapist don’t think I should go back to the service industry until after treatment if at all. But I haven’t worked in a month. Is it possible to get financial help or unemployment while I am waiting? I have bills to pay… I don’t think I qualify for it though. But I’m not working.

Resolved Understanding WA-ESD Hours Reported

Hi All,

I was looking on E-Services at under my employee wage data because I need to sign up for unemployment and noticed that 2024 Q4 data is missing. Does anyone know why that is the case? For 2024 I worked for Q1, a couple weeks of Q3 and all of Q4. I know I will need those hours from Q4 to qualify for employment so not seeing them is making me nervous.

Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
