Not offered feedback after being rejected for an NQ role

It was an oversubscribed role but I asked for feedback and it’s been 3 weeks and I still have not received a reply. I had many positive conversations with partners who indicated they’d like me back, as well as some really good feedback. I’m a bit blindsided (hence why I asked for feedback). Is it rare for NQs to ask for feedback or..? I’m a bit puzzled as to why I’ve just been abandoned

Oxford masters

Am I delusional? I want to do a Master’s at the University of Oxford. I am aiming to graduate my undergraduate degree at a non Russell Group university with a First (70%). I also plan to complete vacation schemes and a summer internship. I want to create my own civic education programme for people in my community, and I will further increase my law clinic volunteering as well as join the Law Society in my final year.

My degree has a dissertation but I didn’t do it. am I delusional to think I could be accepted? If yes, is there anything I can do to increase my chances of being accepted or is it basically over?

Lateral move from in-house to private practice

Hi All,

Seeking some guidance as I couldn’t find many personal account online of people’s experiencing moving from an in-house (legal counsel) position to private practice; as it’s usually the other way around.

I’m completing my SQE 2 exams later this October and (provided I pass) I have a role secured for me as a Legal Counsel at my current company (a FinTech in London). At some point though, I’d like to move to private practice, just to get some experience as I’ve only ever worked legal in-house, but I’ve not met many who’s gone through this route.

If anyone has gone through this route and are willing to share their experience, I’d really appreciate it! Not sure if this is even a realistic option for someone staring from in-house in their legal career.

Importance of networking as a barrister?

Hi all,

I’m hoping that if I were to acquire pupillage, I’d be very interested in trying to broaden my practice area whilst I’m still a junior.

If I was to ensure I was very active as a lawyer - hosting events, going to networking events, organising dinners, etc etc.

Would this help me to develop better relationships with solicitors, and potentially enable me to find more lucrative work in the long run.

How important is networking with partners/associates/even paralegals as a barrister?

EDIT: phrasing

Career advice

Hi everyone, I’m asking for career advice about a paralegal role that I have an interview for.

Firstly, any interview advice would be super helpful.

Secondly, does the firm standing/reputation matter when I’m looking at national/international firms later down the line for a training contract/better paralegal job? The firm I’m interviewing at is a small personal injury practice, and while they have a good reputation in reviews, there isn’t anything else to gauge their reputation on.

A large part of me knows that if I obtain an offer, I should accept it because it’s a legal job, but a small part of me thinks that I’d be shooting myself in the foot, because my field of preference is not claims (clinical negligence, industrial disease, PI, etc.). Would this job limit my future prospects?

Thanks for reading.

Screening Call: What to Expect?

I've got a screening call with a talent acquisition specialist from a large regional law firm in respect of a paralegal role. I've never had a screen call before, so i'm not sure what it usually involves and how best to prepare. I'd be very grateful for any advice.

Thanks in advance.

Hill v CC West Yorkshire, from a current perspective?

I might be misusing words or have the wrong idea, I’m not formally educated on the law, I look into it for fun sometimes (mainly due to lord Denning quotes). Also if this is political, or not allowed, I am happy for it to be removed!

The reasoning given in Hill v CC West Yorkshire was to prevent defensive policing (alongside proximity and like caparo stuff), which seems fair. But in recent cases like in Tindall v Thames Valley, where they’ve make something worse and still not been liable for a breach, or even had a duty of care arise.

Does it not seem as if, by avoiding ‘belt and teeth’ policing, we have found ourselves in such a position where police aren’t being defensive enough. Recent events like Novak and Cumberbatch, to me, illustrate that perhaps enough time and care to eliminate risks isn’t being taken, to such an extent where a duty should be imposed.

I would like to know if I have misinterpreted things, I end up on strange Uni thesises for most of my legal reading, so I might be wrong. And if my facts are correct, I was wondering how people feel about this and if anyone’s thought about this also?

Getting a degree in Scotland and then practising in UK?

I am classed as International in England due to my limited leave to remain therefore I am going to have to chose Scotland for my University so I can get Home Status. I am a bit stuck right now as I am not sure like if I study common law in Scotland will I be able to apply for TC in the England (London) or they except me to do a Masters? Also, I am going to go through clearing so I am probably going to chose whichever university has law in clearing. So, does the university prestige matters or is it better for me to study something else instead?

Taking part in external recruitment events

Say as a trainee solicitor we are invited by a uni society/organisation to speak in a panel about our life as a trainee solicitor in the firm. Do we have to clear this with Early Careers before accepting?

What career paths/jobs can one pursue with a 2.2 in law from a RG university (not necessarily a lawyer)?

Hi hope you guys are well! Just to preface I haven't actually achieved a 2.2 in my degree overall I am in my second year. This question has essentially arisen after receiving a grade in a module that was way below my standard (2.1 average) after going through a rough patch mentally at the time. Being honest it has definitely upset me and maybe this post is a bit over dramatic but it's mainly for the purpose of planning and preparing myself for all possibilities.

I would be grateful if anyone has any advice or stories on what they have gotten into upon receiving a 2.2. Thank you for reading.

Any suggestions for where to sell law books?

I'm wanting to sell a copy of the White Book (2024) I assume that listing these on eBay or Vinted probably won't get me too far. Does anyone know of a website where I can list directly or even a website that buys law books?

Can exaggerating your cv effect a career in law and the sra?

I did volunteering with a charity to gain new skills and to boost my cv when applying for law jobs. Problem is I did the volunteering on and off for in total of 3 months and you had to be with them for at least 1 year to get a referral. I did basic stuff such as adding clients to the system, attended work shops, followed up on basic questions with the client. I eventually left it because it was hard to commit to it with a job. Is it worth even adding it to my cv when applying fir legal jobs?

I was going to exaggerate it on my cv and write i did it for 3 months but will this be a problem with the solicitors regulation authority regarding dishonesty? I've heard solicitors have been struck off for things like dishonesty. Should I leave it out of my cv?

I want to work for a startup whilst doing my PGDL (with a TC)

I recently got a TC at a major US company (yay) as a non law finalist. I also got an offer to join a late stage startup on a full time basis, which has good pay and I think I would be able to handle it alongside the PGDL (seems pretty loose on workload?). I would be living at home and it would be great to properly save up in the interim.

Now I need to decide whether to accept the start up offer soon. I want to know if this should be run by conflicts (assuming yes), and what information they might require of the company. I.e if the investors of the startup were VCs that worked with the firm, would that be a conflict? I am not sure how comfortable my startup boss (haha) would be with me handing over information to the firm. Honestly I just have no clue what the process is, if this would normally be allowed and how to go about doing it all.

Has anyone else worked in the interim of doing their PGDL and SQE and faced any conflicts issues? Is this literally nothing to stress about

University Grades

Do firms take into account how different universities assess students?

For example, if one student had 7 in-person closed book exams and averaged a mid 2:1 and another had all coursework and averaged a first, do they take that into consideration?

I personally think they should

Please give me some advice on my paralegal job moving to formal stage

Hi, I posted under the title:
Worried about capability/performance process at work — should I be actively planning to leave?

I'm looking for advice because I'm quite anxious about a capability/performance situation at work and I'm not sure how serious it is.
I'm a paralegal and started in June 2025 in a recently expanded regional firm (around 500 people). My immediate team is small (two partners, a paralegal role, and a legal secretary).
Early on, my supervising solicitor became seriously ill and left, so I had very limited structured supervision or training for several months.
On 8 May 2026 l was unexpectedly called into a meeting with HR and a partner and received a letter confirming it was an informal capability/ performance meeting.
Concerns included:
- timekeeping (a few minor 1-2 minute late arrivals)
- productivity
- accuracy/detail
- needing supervision
- lack of initiative

The outcome of the meeting is they are progressing me to the formal stage. Do I put my resignation in tomorrow? How long does the formal stage take?

mostly feeling quite embarrassed about it, even though i know a job is a job. where do i even go from here?

Banking --> Law Career Change in 30s

Hello Reddit,

I'm 31 and work as a private client banker in Scotland. I'm worried that this might not be the right role for me and would like to understand if anyone has had experience transitioning into law in their 30s. I understand as a Scottish resident, the route would be a 2 year accelerated LLB followed by a training contract, and when I start I would be taking a significant pay cut to what I get now.

Based on the fact I have significant experience with private clients I suppose this would be an option for me further down the road, but I'm only at an early exploratory stage.

All insight appreciated.

What do law students and graduates want to know from senior lawyers?

I’m an ex-magic circle lawyer, now working as Head of Legal in-house.

I recently started a free weekly newsletter for aspiring legal professionals. I see so many students struggling to land their first legal role, especially those without connections or those based outside of London, and no-one else seems to be tackling the problem. Drives me crazy when I see roles listed as ‘entry level’ requiring 3 years of paralegal experience!

I’m on my fifth newsletter now but I’m conscious it has been more than ten years since I was applying for legal roles. If you’re an aspiring lawyer, I’d love to know what you could really use help with from the lawyers and legal professionals?

Any honest info and advice appreciated 🙏

Ps I’m also very keen to show that there are exciting, varied, interesting careers outside of the magic circle (often with much better work life balance and significantly less pressure)!

**UPDATE - thanks so much for your messages about reading the newsletter. You can subscribe and read previous newsletters at inclusieclub.co.uk. I’m loving reading your requests and ideas!**
