👋 Welcome to r/TexasElectricity - Start Here to Decode Your Bill & Beat the Math Trap

Welcome everyone! I started this community because the Texas retail electricity market is fundamentally broken for the average homeowner, and it’s time we level the playing field.

The "Teaser Rate" Trap Some retail energy providers in Texas rely on gimmicks. But if you read the fine print, that rate only applies if you use exactly 1000 kWh or 2000 kWh. The second a Texas summer hits, your AC works overtime, your usage shifts outside that narrow tier, and hidden penalties kick in. Suddenly, your effective rate doubles.

These plans are effective only if you know your power consumption pattern. You cannot accurately shop for power in Texas using a generic "average monthly usage." To actually benefit from some of the credit back, free nights, free weekend plans, you have to look at your home's 15-minute interval data from Smart Meter Texas and run that specific footprint against the complex math of every available plan.

Purpose of this community: This is a space to share strategies, warn each other about bad experiences with billing, the plan traps, and help decode confusing bills.

I got so frustrated doing this manually that I built an automated platform called MyPowerNegotiator. It securely pulls your past 12 months of smart meter data and calculates exactly what you will pay on every available plan so you can find your true lowest cost.

How to get started here:

  1. Got a confusing bill? Redact your personal info and post a screenshot. We'll help you decode it.
  2. Looking for a new plan? Run your home's math through the tool and let us know what you find.
  3. Have questions about the grid? Ask away.

Grab a seat, look out for your neighbors, and let's stop overpaying for power.

Texas energy plans- rhythm referral code

Hello! I moved from gexa to rhythm 3 years ago because I had a minimum use credit plan (pls learn from my mistakes and don’t get this). Rhythm was one of two companies that would reimburse early termination fee, and it had the simplest plans for me. Don’t get the minimum use credit plans, louder for the people in the back! I’m ambivalent on the time of use plans- I don’t want the hassle but other people have loved them. I’m very happy with my electricity bill now. Use this code for $100 credit each for me and you!

3 months Plan

Post image

I am seeing conversations on going with short term 3 months plan. Came across this on PTC which most of us use. If you are going with this plan, make sure you have to pay a one time fee of $50 to signup which is equivalent to 1.6 cents/ kWh at 1,000 kWh usage. So your cost will be 5.3+4.99+0.49+1.6=12.4 cents at 1,000 kwh - not 11.2 at 1,000 kWh (EFL is based on 1/12 of the $50 fee but this is a 3 months plan and $50 is one time fee).

Free Solar + Battery + 25-Year Locked Electricity Rate in Texas. Your Thoughts?

Some of the providers I work with have started rolling out VPP programs in Texas. So I started looking it in detail.

Highlevel details: Full solar system + home battery installed at $0 upfront, get backup power during outages and you lock in an electricity rate for the next 25 years (contract term)

For that, the provider owns and remotely manages the system as part of a larger grid network.

As a homeowner, the benefits I see are - No upfront cost, whole-home backup power, potentially (assuming the retail rates go up as we see in the discussions) savings compared to regular plans.

What I am thinking about is -Locked in for a full 25 years, rate escalates slightly (3%) every year (but what if the retail rates don't really go up as much as we think would go up) and I don’t own the equipment until the end of the contract

I’m curious what you all think about this type of program.

Would this be something you’d consider for your home?

Drop a comment below with your thoughts? yes, no, or too much to worry about that electricity bill 😄and if you want more details, just say the word and I’ll share what I know.

Texas Electricity Plans Cheat Sheet

Texans - stop falling for the “lowest teaser rate” trap on Power to Choose.

Most plans look amazing on paper… until your actual bill arrives and you realize the plan was never built for your home’s usage pattern.

The Cheat Sheet:

  • Bill Credit Plans: Only for the "Steady Eddie." Best if you hit 1,000–1,500 kWh every month. Miss the window, and your rate spikes.
  • Free Nights/Weekends: Only for "Night Owls" and EV owners. You need >50% usage at night to make this math work. Otherwise, the daytime rate will kill you.
  • Fixed Rate: The "Safe Bet." Best for homes with big usage swings (Âą50%). No gimmicks, no "lost" credits, just one price.

You still need to look at your base energy charge and any monthly usage charges. Why guess, when you can use free tools at MyPowerNegotiator.com:

  • Check My True Rate → Upload your bill, authenticate from your email and upload the EFL. It will instantly show you the real cost of any plan on your exact usage pattern.
  • Other usage analytics tools that break down your day/night split, monthly swings, and high-usage periods so you can match the right plan type every time.

Need help to run the numbers for you? Send your bill to [hello@MyPowerNegotiator.com](mailto:hello@MyPowerNegotiator.com) - Its free.

Who else is shopping for summer rates right now? What’s your typical monthly usage and biggest frustration with electricity plans? Drop it below 👇

(Pro tip: Always check the EFL — the fine print is where they hide the real math.)

Why "Personalized" Electricity Plans are the new trend (and what to watch out for)

There is a big shift happening in the Texas market right now. Electricity companies are starting to move away from "one-size-fits-all" rates and are exploring ways to offer plans tailored specifically to your usage.

The problem here is - the plan that looks cheap for your neighbor might be a rip-off for you. As a customer we need to use our usage pattern to our advantage to level the playing field.

Use the free Check My True Rate tool to see what a plan will actually cost you based on your real usage and not the average on the teaser trap rates.

Just came across this on LinkedIn. Looks like Base Energy price and TDU will start increasing as we see the load hitting the grid. Thoughts?

Am I Paying More? (Probably.) Here is the 60-second way to find out.

Post image

With hundreds of plans in the Texas market, finding the right match is a data challenge. A rate that works for your neighbor might not work for you and a "cheaper" advertised rate doesn’t always mean it’s cheaper for your specific usage profile.

Use the free "Check My True Rate" calculator. It matches your actual usage against current market offers to give you a free second opinion.

Ensure your next electricity plan is optimized for your home's unique usage, not a generic average.

I kind of know my usage. I dont need to dig into weeds. I am with you but look at this

Post image

Above are two plans with similar rates, Plan 1 (top) - free nights and the 2nd plan (bottom) with fixed rates. Although Plan 1 is slightly higher but its with free nights, so the user was inclined towards it. We ran the users past 12 monthly of usage profile thru Check My True Rate (graphs on the right corresponding to each plan). The fixed rate plan (bottom - NO Free nights) costs $136 cheaper for the user. The reason is - this particular fixed rate plan is designed for users with atleast 35% night time usage and this user's night time usage during the free night duration is 24%.

So ITS IMPORTANT to understand your usage and the plan's EFL.

Free Nights Plans: A "Steal" or a "Trap"? How we calculate the break-even point.

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone, we get asked this constantly at MyPowerNegotiator: “Is a Free Nights plan actually a good fit for me?”

The answer isn't just "yes" or "no" it’s in your usage data. Most people see "0 cents" night rate and get excited, but they overlook the 20+ cent daytime rate that comes with it.

If you are trying to DIY this math, here is the quick checklist we use to see if it makes sense:

  1. The 40% Rule: Generally, if you can’t shift at least 40% of your total usage to the free window, you’ll likely pay more than a standard fixed rate.
  2. High-Load Appliances: Do you have an EV, a pool pump, or a multi-zone HVAC? If you can't automate these to run at night, the plan usually fails.
  3. The "Work from Home" Factor: If you’re home all day with the AC at 72°F, these plans can be brutal during a Texas summer.

If not sure, use "Check My True Rate" (top right) at www.MyPowernegotiator.com - Upload your bill, confirm from your email and upload the plans EFL.

What’s been your experience? Have you managed to game the system and get a crazy low effective rate, or did you get burned by a $400 August bill? Curious to hear your stats!

When you are about to sign a new electricity contract, is there a specific provider you trust, or a specific "gotcha" in the fine print that you always watch out?
