Discussion The Fifth Race Spoiler

Post image

The room that they gate into could very well be just a box in space, and I'm wondering if there's anything later to contradict this.

If the only purpose is to hold the Ancient archive then it wouldn't need to be ON a planet, right?

The gates in SG1 were located on/near a planet but in SGA the had the gate bridge between galaxies so I’m not sure about it lore wise…

no reason a milky-way gate can't work in space, as long as there's a DHD or something powering them (like the Pegasus space-gate modules which i imagine are cross-compatible.) The reason we don't see any in SG1 is that the Ancients didn't have puddle-jumpers when they made the milky way network, so there was no need for space gates. Also, the Goa'uld have been moving gates around to suit their needs for a long time, and since they don't use gate ship (any more) they'd most likely harvest any space gates they found and put them on a planet they wanted to colonise.

Milky way gates explicitly do work in space, they're shown being used on spaceships and also while being thrown into a sun.

that is what I said, i was explaining why we dont see space-gates in SG1 - its not a technical reason "there's no reason they can't work" - its because theres no logistical point for them

It is not, you said "there's no reason they can't work in space" when we have textual information that they do work in space.

It's like saying "there's no reason the Seahawks can't win the superbowl" when you should be saying they have won a superbowl.

the person was familiar with the gate bridge, they know milky way gates work in space. The can't is referring to space gates - gates that are left alone in space: they can exist in the milky way, but don't because neither of the factions that are responsible for placing them had any use for them.

I only recall them being operational near a gravity well….moon planet or sun…I love the show but can(and am a lot of the time wrong) definitely be wrong. Do you recall an episode in SG1 where it was operational outside of a gravity well?

The ori mega gate?

Gates don't need to be on a gravity well, just powered. Gate addresses are not exact. Like the gate address for Earth doesn't tell the wormhole to go to the 3rd planet in the solar system, it just tells it to head towards this star or general location in space. When the wormhole gets there it locks onto the powered gate and makes the connection.

A gate floating in the void of space could be dialed just as easily so long as the coordinate system is accurate enough to create the wormhole in the general relative area of the gate and the gate itself is powered/has a DHD.

You are correct. There are Milky Way gates used as the gate bridge.

I know in SGA it was possible(galactic bridge dealo) but I don’t recall any episode in SG1 where it occurred…I know that there’s a lot missing from the lore and thing can get retconned but is there an episode in SG1 that shows them using a gate outside of a gravity well?

The milky way gates get used in half of the galactic bridge, all the way to the space station in the middle. And the gate bridge did appear on sg1. Being on planets is not a technical limitation, just a practical reality in a galaxy without consistent access to gate ships.

Oh shoot that’s true… I love learning stuff I didn’t realize about this show. Thanku very much
