Hi there!

Severodvinsk is a city of regional subordination, a leading industrial center of the Arkhangelsk region and North-West Russia, located 35 kilometers west of Arkhangelsk on the White Sea coast. Founded as a satellite city of the country's largest shipbuilding complex. In simple words, Severodvinsk is a simple, hard-working city in northern Russia. Famous primarily for its submarines.

The territory of the Severodvinsk municipality, which includes nearby settlements, is 122,889.4 hectares. The area of the city itself is 9,063.8 hectares.

Geographic coordinates: 64° 34' N, 39° 49' E.

Our population, unfortunately, is falling, and it has been falling since 1991. The peak population was 255,000 residents in 1990. At the moment, the population remains at 155,365 people. Mostly they leave for St. Petersburg, because... it is “quite” close, there are more opportunities, more people compared to the city of Severodvinsk, as well as other cities like Yaroslavl, Murmansk, Petrozavodsk, Moscow.

The city's climate is typical for the North: moderately humid, with long, cold but not severe winters and short, cool summers. Summer in Severodvinsk is cool, with an average July temperature of 13-20 °C, with the heaviest precipitation in August. Winter in Severodvinsk is cold, but not severe, due to the proximity of the Atlantic, constant weak but warm cyclones, and the location right next to the White Sea (due to its heat capacity, the water gives off a lot of heat in winter). Thanks to the northern location of the city, it is possible to observe the aurora borealis.

Severodvinsk is predominantly a mono-ethnic city (the Greek "mono" means one), with a clear predominance of the Russian population amounting to 95.5%, of which many identify themselves equally as Pomors (rus:"поморы"). The most common representatives of ethnic minorities are Ukrainians, Belarusians, Tatars, Azerbaijanis, Chuvashs and Indians.

The economy of Severodvinsk is based on heavy shipbuilding (nuclear submarines, the basis of the economic potential is JSC PA Sevmash, JSC CS Zvezdochka, JSC SPO Arktika, which are part of JSC United Shipbuilding Corporation), which makes it a single-industry town. Shipbuilding enterprises employ ~44 thousand people (35.3% - 44% of the city’s economically employed population). But the food industry (bakery plant, meat processing plant, dairy plant), trade and production of optics, electronics and other vehicles are also developed, making a significant contribution to the economy of the Arkhangelsk region.

Q: Is it possible to visit the city of Severodvinsk both for tourism and for life?

A: Of course you can, in both cases. Having received the necessary documents, it will not be difficult to come, for example, to the capital (Moscow), St. Petersburg and other popular cities, because there are no restrictions on visits, just like in the city of Severodvinsk. But in any case, you need to consult your “tutor” to prevent any problems

V.I. Lenin Avenue was built up in the 1950s. This is one of the wide streets of the city that runs from north to south. The beginning of the avenue was the plant management building of JSC PA Sevmash, the largest shipbuilding plant in the country, most of whose production is fulfilling the state defense order for the construction of nuclear submarines. The wide strip of park running from the factory headquarters was planted by factory and city workers in the 1960s. This is a sanitary zone that separates the territory of the enterprise from urban residential areas.

70 years ago, the future Lenin Avenue was completely different. To transport materials and operate tower cranes along the street, then called Arkticheskaya, railway tracks were installed for the transport of building materials and operate tower cranes. The entire avenue was built in just a few years. It reflected the characteristic features of Stalinist classicism - monumental buildings using classical architectural orders and stucco.

The first houses on the street were built by prisoners; From 1938 to 1956, Yagrinlag branches operated in the city. Among the items found during the renovation of these houses, there are often notes from prisoners with congratulations and autographs.

These semicircular houses form the first square, which received the name of one of the directors of the shipbuilding plant - Evgeniy Pavlovich Egorov. E.P. Egorov led the company for 20 years from 1952 to 1972; in the West, the name “Egorov’s company” was used even in departmental circles. It was during these years that nuclear submarines began to be built at Sevmash. In 2008, an architectural composition was created dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the nuclear fleet and the 100th anniversary of E.P. Egorov was opened on this square. Its main element is the ship's anchor.

Among the residential buildings, the building of the House of Engineering and Technical Workers of Sevmash stands out. A team of sculptors, formed from specialists from all over the Soviet Union, worked on the external design of the building. Columns with capitals decorate the front porch; at the entrance you can see five round stucco inserts, each with its own theme. On the main facade there is a portal emblem with the inscription DITR\).

And a special decoration of DITR was an ornamented lyre in the form of two swans. It was made by sculptor Vasily Podvalny according to the project. But at the last moment the customer abandoned this idea, considering it an architectural excess. The lyre remained at the design location only because it had already been raised onto the roof; all that remained was to be concreted. Which is what they did.

For a long time people were allowed into this building only with passes, but now it is open to all citizens.

* - Russian language: Аббревиатура ДИТР расшифровывается как Дом инженерно-технических работников; English: The abbreviation DITR stands for House of Engineering and Technical Workers.

Comment from the author (pavel_petukhov):

Having examined Solombala in the last part, I went to the city of Severodvinsk, neighboring Arkhangelsk. Perhaps this was the shortest trip; I spent only three hours in the city, but managed to see a significant part of it (with the exception of the Yagry island area on the island of the same name).

People have lived on the site of present-day Severodvinsk since ancient times; in 1419, the Nikolo-Korelsky Monastery arose here, near which R. Chancellor landed in 1553... and so on, the author goes on to tell a history about the city

After renovation under the national project “Housing and Urban Environment” on the st. Captain Voronin was planted with 240 Canadian maples. 🌱Good news: only 50 of them don't have fully leafed leaves yet. Environmentalists note that the buds are alive and foliage will appear on the trees in the near future. 🤞All landings are under warranty for 5 years.

He says:

"Anyway, besides buying a steering wheel, that day I also went to my historical homeland (where I was born). What can I say about the city? It's small, quiet, and clean, with some Soviet signs and houses still standing. Compared to Arkhangelsk, I like Severodvinsk better..."
