Any medieval centric things to do or see in Prague aside from visiting the castle and wandering old town? Will be in 2 days. Looking for other nearby castles, old taverns and the like

I will be in Prague for a week, at the beginning of June. My time will be somewhat limited because I will be going as part of a Summer course on Musicology by Charles University, which I would guess will take up most of my morning/afternoon, leaving me with late afternoon/evenings to walk around and get to know a little of the city. I already have tickets to a Poulenc Opera at the Opera house. What else would you recommend doing? I am not so interested in night life, as I am in cultural events/walks in the city.
P.S. I will have the full day on both the Sunday after my arrival and the Saturday of my leaving before I leave for the airport at night. So feel free to add weekend-friendly suggestions!

Hi! I'm going back to Prague next month. First time was with the whole family but this time it will be just my siblings and I (they're based in Germany so they're asking me what I want to do because Prague is accessible to them). We've gone the sight seeing route of the palaces and the like last time we were here.
Since we've already done the touristy sightseeing and walking tours, I was wondering what you guys can recommend we do this time. We love food, I love beer and drinking (lol), and I enjoy seeing city parks and nature things (We don't have a lot of those where I'm from. Just lots of buildings in the city 😞). We have 2 or 3 days in Prague (We'll be coming from Vienna).
Thanks in advance!

Go to (by tram, or by metro to Nádraží Veleslavín and then the airport trolley bus) to Divoká Šárka and follow the A163 cycle path signs through the park to Restaurace Jenerálka (a 5km flat walk). Drink and eat there, and then take a bus back to Dejvicka. From there walk to Klubovna Cultural Center and get absolutely hammered until 4am.

We went to the zoo yesterday, it was absolutely a beatiful location. And super big! So maybe that counts as park (with animals)

Visiting Prague between the 21st and the 24th. Wondering about family friendly things I can engage the cousins with (aged 10-14), but also their parents (50s). Museums with engaging premises for kids come to mind for me, but any recommendation is appreciated :)

Hey! I will be staying next week in Prague as a solo traveller. What are the recommendations for places to meet some people speaking English and where you can find have a chill vibe like an outside party or something related?
2
u/DefoNotTheAnswer 9d ago
The whole Old Town is tourists. Pick pretty much any bar or pub, and it will be full of English speakers. For outdoor parties, check out Stalin (if it still exists) or Střecha Radost.

Taking my 13‑year‑old nephew to Prague soon, any must‑visit, quirky, unique, fun places/stores for teens his age beyond the usual tourist sightseeing.
He´s growing up to be of the nerdy type and loves manga, programming, etc.
Also open to any recommendations to hype him up before the trip:

You can stop by in this tavern: https://mysteriapragensia.cz/kellyxir/
They have many non-alcoholic drinks to choose from and it's a fun vibe.

We're visiting Prague next month and really like to run through any cities we stay in.
From what I've read about Old Town, which is where we're staying, we'd be best getting a tram somewhere else but we don't want to piss locals off any more than two Brits attempting to speak Czech will do already.
Also looking for gluten free food, for after the aforementioned runs.
Thanks in advance.

As for GF food, U Agamy, Al Riso, Babiččina spíž. The Coloseum pizza Na Poříčí has some good options and usually a knowledgable staff. Marthy's kitchen offers GF variations but I've seen how they store the bread and uh...safety protocols what safety protocols. Cukrárna Buchta if you feel like going to Dejvice is very good, but only open on weekdays. I don't recommend that ~rustic~ bread pekárna Dvorník sells at farmer's markets, it tastes like cardboard (probably a hit with the people who have yet to understand asking for kapusta won't get them the kale they want), but to each their own. For fast food options, Bageterie Boulevard and Wok-in offer decent GF options.
Most supermarkets sell a fair amount of safe food, Albert has a dedicated shelf and even their own store brand of bread and baked goods (the packaging of GF stuff is usually very orange to make it easier to find). Cheaper brands often have deproteinated wheat so be mindful if that's a concern. Unless you are super duper worried, I usually just avoid places that don't list the allergens on the menu because that's a sign it's not gonna be safe at all, and it works out alright.

Country Life in Melantrichova might have some, I know I bought a decent one there before. That or Sklizeno.

u/Veenacz 28d ago
I don't run myself, but if I did, I'd either run along the river or Stromovka park. Stromovka is huge and easy to get to by a tram. The river is right next to Old Town and your best bet is to run left, against the current, towards Žluté Lázně/Výtoň. You can even run as far as the city limits go, there is a run/bike/walk path in very good condition. You won't be pissing anybody off, surely. If the sun is out, the riverside is lovely. And you can take a tram back if you get tired, the tracks go along the river all the way.

Since your post is deleted, we don't know exactly what you are looking for, but from the title i'd recommend:
Jiřího z Poděbrad - nice square, lots of new coffee/food/drinks places on the north-east side. Basically can't go wrong, depends on what you are looking for. There are burgers (Fat Fuck, just a bit of walking), czech quisines (Lokál), craft brewery (Matuška), rotisserie chicken (KRO) and many more. You can check out the Žižkov TV tower in the next district, there is even a restaurant at the top. Riegrovy sady is a popular punk place to hang out, more like a chill place rather than a design one. Also, the church at Náměstí Míru is nice, but not sure how often it's open. The square is quite small, not much to offer, but nice to walk by. You will find more stuff in the old town, Vinohrady is historically more living space rather than touristy. It is quite authentic as there aren't many new buildings, but think 19th-20th century. Not medieval.

Hi! next weekend (eurovision weekend) I will be in Prague for the first time (solo) as part of a "holiday/Work trip", me and my partner usually watch eurovision but not this time. So where can I watch Eurovision, is there a bar where they stream it or is it not so popular there? maybe in my hotel room... or in any case, any suggestion for a saturday night? not a club since it would be boring by myself. Im F35.
thanks!
1
u/DefoNotTheAnswer 24d ago
It's just not very popular here. There is usually at least one LGBTQ+ club running a ticketed party for it. You can check on goout.cz to see if there are any events, but don't hold your breath.
I've very occasionally I've seen it on in a bar or pub, but most places close around 11, well before the end of the show. Your best bet will be your hotel room or possibly hotel lounge/bar.

Stag parties are widely hated here, so you won't get much help for that part. This sub already has a lot of info on travelling to Kutna Hora... use the search bar at the top to see tons of good advice. It boils down to: go by train, either using Czech Rail's website/app or use the Integrated Prague Transport app 'Litacka'. Czech Rail is simpler but more expensive (by 5 or so EUR) and includes a numbered seat reservation; Prague Transport is cheaper and covers transport around Kutná Hora, but doesn't cover seat reservations and is a bit more complicated to sort out.
For other Prague stuff, take a look at the recommendations post pinned at the top.

Me and my partner are spending 3 nights in Prague this summer as a part of a longer trip, so not a lot of time to explore. I'm wondering if anyone has some recommendations on tasting tours that would be worth spending a few hours on, beer or food preferably. Not pub crawls/heavy drinking, just some tasting, getting a bit tipsy and socializing would be perfect while seeing some nice parts of the town.
Also recommendations on any cool places that focuses on good music (rock, metal etc. not edm) and/or food and drinks are welcome. In two days we probably don't have time to get outside of the tourist bubble, but we don't want to stress too much and mainly just chill and enjoy good beer 😄

Dear citizens of Prague, I come to you in a time of great need.
This weekend, I will be visiting your magnificent city with my pregnant girlfriend, a woman of exquisite taste, and very specific cravings.
I had, in my infinite wisdom, secured us a reservation at Výčep. I was proud. I was confident. I was wrong.
One look at the menu and the cravings spoke without negotiation.
She wants burgers. Glorious, greasy, towering burgers. With fries. Possibly with something cold and delicious for me on the side.
And so the quest has been handed down to me, her humble servant, to find a place worthy of the occasion. Not just any place. A place with a great vibe. Maybe some live music drifting through the air. The kind of spot where the food is as good as the atmosphere and the atmosphere makes the food taste even better.
Does such a place exist in Prague? I believe in you. She believes in her cravings. And her cravings have never once been wrong.
Any and all recommendations will be received with profound gratitude.

I'm looking for any fun history/science museums to visit with a group of friends! We're all from NYC so not too phased by large buildings or city sights. What do you recommend to experience some of the city's rich culture and history? Hoping for budget activities :)

u/DefoNotTheAnswer 20d ago
Find a nice beer garden or pub with street-side seating. Get slowly but thoroughly drunk while you watch the world wander past. Then decide what you want to do with the rest of the morning.

Hey everyone! I'll be in Prague for four days (starting May 20th). I've visited around ten different countries before, but this will be my first time traveling solo. I'd really appreciate any recommendations especially for good solo-dining spots.
Also, if anyone wants to meet up and hang out, let me know! (19M)

My girlfriend and I are visiting Prague from June 2nd to June 7th and would love some recommendations for things to do, eat and see.
We really wanted to visit the Planetarium, but tickets seem to have already sold out for the dates we’re there. Does anyone know if there’s another way to get tickets, or if extra availability is sometimes released?
Apart from that, we’re pretty open, so any recommendations for food spots, hidden gems, nice views, bars, day trips, or must-do experiences would be massively appreciated.
Thanks in advance! 😄

34F solo traveller visiting Prague for the first time in late May (Fri–Mon) and trying to decide between Alfons Boutique Hotel and Le Palais Art Hotel Prague (Vinohrady), thoughts??
Would love opinions on which area/location is better for a first Prague trip, which feels safer/more comfortable for a solo female traveller, which has a better vibe for someone in their 30s! I slightly prefer the modern boutique style of Alfons, but keep seeing Vinohrady recommended a lot.
Also happy to take any café/bar/restaurant recommendations 🙂
1
u/DefoNotTheAnswer 17d ago
I recommend you take a look around the hotels on streetview. The Alfons Boutique is on Legerova street... a 4 lane high way that runs across town and carries more car traffic than any other street in Prague. It's near IP Pavlov which on one hand is a big transport interchange so good for metro and trams, but on the other hand is home to a lot of late night food vendors and attracts a lot drunks and homeless. To be clear, it isn't even slightly dangerous, but it can feel unpleasant if that sort of atmos isn't something you are used to.
Les Palais Art is a quiter location on the edge of Vinohrady, well placed for all the hip cafes, bars and restaurants around the intersection of Americká and Záhřebska and also on Belgická.
I can't speak to the qualities of the hotels themselves, but as far as location goes the Alfons is better connected but in a loud, more boisterous area, where as Les Palais area is quieter, more high end area, but a couple of hundred meters away from most transport.
All of Prague is ridiculously safe by big city standards, so that's much less of consideration than it would be in a lot of other European capitals.

Hello, I am going to be visiting Prague with my 7 year old daughter and 13 year old niece in a few weeks. I have been before and loved the city but I haven’t been in nearly 20 years. We have a list of touristy stuff to do but would love to hear some local tips and also fun places to eat. Finally we went to Budapest last year and found an amazing playground so we would like to also visit the best playground that Prague has to offer! On our list so far:
National museum
Zoo via the zoo boat
Golden Lane
TV tower
Wax museum of legends (holiday tradition)
Illusion art museum (also a holiday tradition)
The restaurant that delivers your food by model train
I found the communism and Kafka museum’s fascinating but I think they would be a bit tough for a 7 year old.
Thank you!

u/DefoNotTheAnswer 16d ago
Perhaps the Children's Museum? The Karel Zeman Museum is a little pricey for what it is, but kids like it. Also a Prague transport pass also covers a lot of the cross-river ferries.

any small local stores that sell handcrafted things?
1
u/DefoNotTheAnswer 15d ago
Place store is a small shop that hosts work from a bunch of Czech artisans, selling anything from clothing to stationery. Despite it's location it isn't touristy; Place stores started and have outlets in some totally non tourist Czech towns.

u/Top-Echidna2243 8d ago
Hey, thanks a lot for the recommendation, I’m also interested in finding some places that sell handmade/crafty/artsy things, these are my favourite types of souvenirs to bring back whenever I’m travelling. Any other recommendations would be appreciated

my boyfriend and I will be visiting Prague from August 12 through August 14 this year. We know there is TONS to do in Prague but this is the timeline we are working with! That being said, I am really looking for more localized recommendations on what we absolutely must do/taste/try during those days.
We are huge specialty coffee lovers and foodies, but the endless lists of coffee shops and restaurants is mind boggling. I have no idea where to start.
We aren’t huge on sightseeing or tours, we really just want to hang out in pretty places and eat good food and drink good coffee (we are sober - so no alcohol). It’s just me and my boyfriend so we would love any pretty places to just sit and have a romantic afternoon or something. Very laid back.
Where are some places you’d recommend if you were on a tight trip like this?

u/DefoNotTheAnswer 14d ago
Prague's first sober bar just opened a couple of weeks ago. https://www.soberprague.cz/
For coffee, Kampus Hybernska, Anežka, Petrohradská kolektiv, Coffee Room, Spižírna 1902 (based on the quality of the coffee and the surroundings). For restaurants, there is just far too much choice to give recommendations without knowing more about preferences, budget and willingness to travel.2
u/emixbritt 14d ago
Thank you for this! The sober bar seems so cool. As far as restaurants go, we are wanting to eat as much of the local food/things we can’t get as easily in the states. We’re hoping to do one more “upscale” dinner then casual dining for the rest of our time there. Our Airbnb is is really close to the Franz Kafka head statue and we’re fine with walking. Also plan on using the metro and buses so no issue there either. My boss recommended Gruzie Restaurant to us but wasn’t sure if it would really hold up.
2
u/DefoNotTheAnswer 14d ago
Well, Gruzie restaurant is a Georgian restaurant (the country, not the US state), so not the best place for local food 😄. Výčep does modern takes on local classics and has a Michelin guide listing. It does a good job of being a high-ish end restaurant disguised as a pub. Properly local and famous is U Bansethů (cash only). Very close to you is U Pinkasů, one of the few downtown pub/restaurants I can recommend... but only if you can get into the back garden, between the pub and the church... even on the warmest days, it stays relatively cool back there. Kuchyň has decent food and good views.
Oh, and I forgot about VNITROBLOCK for coffee and cool surroundings.
Lots more recommendations in the pinned post at the top of this sub.

I've traveled to a bunch of countries, I'm not new to this, but I'd like to get Prague- specific things.
How much cash should I have on hand, or are most places card only?
Is there a tipping culture?
Are taxis a good price? Is it worth it to use one for going to/from the airport?
How late are things open? Restaurants, shops, etc.
Any helpful tips are appreciated. Me and my friend are fairly well behaved, we know how to respect other cultures, and we're very excited to come here at the end of the month!
1
u/DefoNotTheAnswer 13d ago
- 99% take Visa/Mastercard-backed cards. Worth having 1000CZK on you just in case.
- There is. Others will say otherwise, but they are wrong. It's rounding up to the next round number that is within 5-10% max and it is by no means mandatory. Most places don't have those card terminals that have the tipping options, so when paying by card you add the tip to your total. So they say "that will be 380", you say a number between 400 and 420, depending on how you feel, and they say thank you and change the number on the terminal. Alternatively, you can not tip. They won't shout at you or chase you down the street. More American-style aggressive tip culture has started to appear in the tourist traps downtown.
- Don't use street taxis. Use app-based cabs like Uber, Bolt and Liftago. Uber are the official cab company for the airport. It will cost you 600-700CZK. A public transport ticket will cost you 46CZK. For public transport, use the official 'Litacka' app.
- Most pubs and bars close at 11 and stop cooking at 9. If you want to keep drinking there are plenty of exceptions... if you want to eat late, that's a lot trickier.

Hey, I’m visiting Prague for 4 days and looking for chill bars/pubs where it’s easy to meet locals. I’m into good beer, music, and just hanging out. Any recommendations?

Tourists and locals don't generally mix socially here. Tourists stay in the tourist areas, and the locals stay away from the tourist areas as much as possible.

Is anyone visiting Prague from India in between 26th of May to 10th of June? If yes, please DM
1
u/Monkey_man1202 8d ago
Hello Everyone!
I will be visiting Prague from June 26th to June 29th and staying right in the city center. I want to hit the major sights, but my main goals are to soak up the local culture, avoid tourist traps, and find some amazing bars and food.
As a huge football fan, I also realized my trip aligns perfectly with the end of the World Cup group stages and the start of the Round of 32 knockouts! I’d love to find a place to watch the weekend games with a passionate crowd.
Could you recommend:
World Cup Sports Bars/Pubs: Where is the best place to watch the weekend games? I’m looking for somewhere lively with a good mix of fans, great screens, and ideally an excellent tap list.
Authentic Local Pubs: On non-match nights, where can I find exceptional, properly poured Czech tank beer alongside locals rather than just tour groups?
Traditional Food: Best places near the center to try local dishes like goulash or svíčková at reasonable prices.
Hidden Culture: Any specific architectural spots, hidden courtyards, or unique neighborhoods just outside the immediate center that are worth exploring?
Thank you!

I will be in Prague for the Night of Churches tomorrow (Noc kostelů). Are there any that are particularly good to visit as a part of this? Either unique programming, entry to a space that isn’t usually open to the public, or just really cool to see at night? Thank you!

I think you can put this enquiry in the regular part of the sub. You'll get more responses.
Personally, I like Saints Peter & Paul Basilica and Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius (Karlín) for their hand-painted interiors.

My partner and I will be in Prague from May 14–17. We’re looking for a masquerade ball or something similar. If not, we’d also love recommendations for cabaret or burlesque shows. If anyone has recommendations, tips, or knows about events (even smaller or less touristy ones), we’d really appreciate it!
