John Glover IS Philly Boy Roy

Post image
13 Upvotes

Ok not *really*, but in John Frankenheimer’s 52 Pick-Up (1986), Glover‘s villain character is doing what is technically a Baltimore accent, but it’s so close to Roy and the performance is simultaneously so overtly evil that I got an entirely different appreciation of the movie than most

Anyone else know what I’m talking about?

I’m looking for the post-FMU (I’m pretty sure) episode in which Mike alerts Tom that Sarah Jessica Parker mentioned him on Howard Stern. Parker talks about filming Divorce and asks Howard if he’s heard of Tom. Howard swiftly replies “No,” and the interview moves forward without a hiccup.

I remember Tom playing the audio over and over again speechless and Mike cracking up in the background.

Do streaming apps rip off the best show too?

Just curious if anyone has had a similar experience:

I listened to a lot of "alternative" rock and punk and garage etc growing up, but did not listen to or know about the Best Show until a few years ago. Sometime in the last 5 years I gave Spotify a try and while it was hit and miss, I would run into bands and specific songs I had never before heard that were pretty good. Infrequent but enough.

Fast forward a few years. I figure out the best show exists through Hollywood Handbook and listen to all the post wfmu stuff. I find that the overlap between the few specific songs that spotify has shown me and the specific songs that have been played on the Best Show is pretty overwhelming. I don't know what info is fed into these algorithms, but does anyone else think that they might have pulled a song list from FOT message board or.something and used that to inform certain aspects of it?

Not looking for science, just anecdotes.

From the book "Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism" by former Facebook executive Sarah Wynn-Williams. Sheryl Sandberg's Spike references apparently go waaaay back.

Best Show Vinyl Haul

Just went on the Best Show shopify store post-garage sale and was able to snag the Rated GG 7”, the Gary the Squirrel 7”, and the Best Show Magazine w/ flexi disc all for ten bucks a pop.

I’m surprised they were holding back any significant quantity of this stuff for so long. I’ve been listening since the first post-FMU episode and would have picked this stuff up years ago if it had been available.

Best albums fatigue

This week’s Rest Show best albums of the 2000s was hard for me to listen to. Maybe it is fatigue, and only couple albums getting added weekly. Or the multiple weeks of debating Kanye. One person in the chat wrote: “we don’t need another milquetoast rolling stones list”

I would love to hear the gang’s (RIP 4 Horsemen) personal favorite albums of the decades. Not what was popular or representative.

Anyway I love the show maybe too much and buy all the merch I can, but with the recent dearth of Patreon bonus shows the Rest Show’s best albums has not impressed.

Trying to find song Tom played on an old Best Show

I'm trying to figure out a song that Tom played on an episode in the WFMU days. The song was about Bruce Springsteen being a sellout - my recollection is it was a lo-fi sounding punk sound, it was almost certainly from the mid-to-late 80s (in the midst of Born in the USA being massive), the band may have been from New Jersey, and it had a snarky/sarcastic sort of tone. I think the band may have also used elements of mashups/pastiches in the sound, and clearly had other songs that were bitingly political and snarky/sarcastic.

Any ideas what that was?

I’d been a fan of Joel’s since his first call way back, but lately he’s gotten kind of out of hand. Trying not to be too harsh but it’s just too much.

FWIW here's Spiro's list of the worst of humanity

Andrew Jackson
Andy Dick
John Landis
Anthony Cumia
Hulk Hogan
Marge Schott
Margaret Thatcher
Gallagher (the comedian)
Nick Di Paulo
Ricky Gervais
John Kricfalusi
Murry Wilson (father of Brian Wilson, an entity unto his own)
Joe Piscopo
Rick Dees
Wild Cherry
Howard Stern
Pat Sullivan
Pat Boone

Some of these I don't understand even having Googled them. Wild Cherry? The '70s funk band Wild Cherry? And which Pat Sullivan?

Interestingly, Spiro's father is allowed to say Barenaked Ladies is "just kind of a funny band" and "silly" without getting screamed at.

This weeks Spiro call was great

It's been awwwwhile since I laughed so hard. Tom and Spiro singing BNL's Pinch Me together had me laughing so hard. Spiro rambling on after Tom cuts the song off was hilarious. Tom's exacerbation when he asks Spiro what BNL has over him. Spiro's singing/humming during this call and others and his consistent eagerness to please Tom is great. The Led Zeppelin vulgar Hot Dog song bit was classic Tom.

I really thought when Spiro handed the phone over to his dad it would be Wurster. I had theory that Spiro was Wurster's son(if he has one) in character. Got kinda weird when Tom hung up on him at the end. If Tom keeps taking Spiro's calls this eposode has plenty of future material. I just finished this part of the show and don't know if he calls later.

Yeah, it's how music works dude

• 1 bottle Smirnoff Ice, chilled

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Remove from fridge.

  2. Pop the top.

  3. Pour into a glass or drink straight from the bottle.

  4. Enjoy.

• Seltzer water, to taste

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Pour Smirnoff Ice into a glass over ice.

  2. Top with a splash of seltzer.

  3. Order at a bar as a "Shackleton Adventure" or "Smirnoff Ice Dream" — any bartender worth their salt will know it.

5. Heatwave

A warm Smirnoff Ice for cold winter nights. Unconventional, but perfect after a freezing commute.

INGREDIENTS

• 1 bottle Smirnoff Ice

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. At home: Pour Smirnoff Ice into a pot, pan, or kettle. Heat over the stove for a couple of minutes until it reaches a gentle boil. Pour into a glass and serve hot.

  2. At a bar: Ask your bartender to microwave it for about one minute (if they have a microwave).

6. Canterberry Tail

A festive holiday drink with an exotic fig twist.

INGREDIENTS

• 1 bottle Smirnoff Ice

• Fig juice (to taste) OR 1 fresh fig OR 1 fig leaf

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Pour Smirnoff Ice into a glass over ice.

  2. Add fig juice if available (easier to find in the city), or drop in a fresh fig or fig leaf.

  3. Serve as a holiday treat.

7. Harlem Shuffle

For the coffee lover who also loves a kick.

A cappuccino-style Smirnoff Ice. Best enjoyed at a bar with an espresso machine.

INGREDIENTS

• 1 bottle Smirnoff Ice

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Pour Smirnoff Ice into a glass.

  2. Stir vigorously for approximately two minutes until all carbonation has dissipated and the drink goes completely flat.

  3. The result is a slightly syrupy, smoother liquid — an entirely different drinking experience.

  2. Serve.
