€150 for a mug 🤯

Post image

Does anyone else feel like Fiskars “(Moomin Arabia)” is taking advantage of us Moomin fans!?
Over the past few years the mugs have been getting more and more expensive, and more and more exclusive mugs are being released!
I guess they know people are willing to pay a lot of some of the old rare mugs, and they are finding ways to make the new mugs exclusive and desirable to justify selling them for 150€! This just seems ridiculous to me and I’m starting to have negative feelings towards the company!
This is a shame because I do love my Moomin mugs!

It's a money grab. You don't need their mugs to feel connected to moomins

Go out into nature then sit by a camp fire and play a little harmonica. go commit crimes
That's how I feel connected to Moomins for just a little.

Moomin has turned itself into a high end fashion brand, something I'm pretty sure Tove would be vehemently against. I'm here for the stories and the characters. Hell I even buy merch sometimes, but never stuff like this.

On the one hand I'm happy that Moomin is getting more and more popular, that a lot of everyday people are being exposed to these lovely stories. On the other I can smell how eager Moomin Characters Oy Ltd. is to make MAXIMUM PROFIT which is a big turnoff for me.

This is a problem i have with Moomin merch, I wont buy it myself other people do for me but i always think Tove would hate this. It does feel wrong.

They say it is hand painted.

It's just some random collector's item for collectors, investors and scalpers. The normal Moomin mugs for use and regular consumers are separately.

Yeah, I saw these the other day as well and couldn't believe it either.

To be fair, regular Fiskars brand scissors arent cheap to begin with

And they make really good blades, ive had a Fiskars bread knife (although non moomin branaded) its lasted years, and still the best one I've ever had

When I'm getting upset about not being able to buy some overpriced moomin products, I'm reminding myself that Tove has always criticized materialism through her entire bibliography.

Wanting to have some merch with your favorite series is completely fine, though, but you just gotta be rational about it. Sometimes, it's just better to look up for the alternatives or maybe even consider making your own hand-made stuff. Some people are often going way too crazy with trying to collect every single item from the particular brand, and the joy of this kind of collecting fades very quickly

Moomin mugs have increasingly been money grabs. The store chain and location exclusive ones, sold at a premium and ripe for the scalper market, are the worst.

I mean, you don’t have to buy it. There are other Moomin mugs that are cheaper

I like to buy them second hand, for like 10-20 euro (maybe not this specific special edition, but I dont care about special editions). I really like them and use them everyday, they fit nicely in hand, but wouldn’t pay 150$

Well.. the platinum one cost over 1k € at first days... let that sink in. Now the mug price is 800-900 €

It's far too expensive, not buying it, but it looks really cute! There's an upcoming collab with Rebels club that looks amazing, hope those won't be so expensive. I have a collection of moomin mugs, but I only buy the ones that I just think look nice, and there's plenty that I have decided against buying because of price.

New collection

It's hand painted, in limited quantity, in collaboration with another brand. It's going to cost more, it's meant for collecting instead of being a mug geared towards everyone. It's expensive yes, but by just being hand painted it should be.

Exactly, and the rest of the BEAMS collection is a decent price imo (T-shirts etc). A limited, hand painted ceramic mug from Japan for €150 feels justifiable, if you’re into that sort of thing, especially when considering there are so many other €30 mugs available

There are many, many Moomin stories that mock this type of object fetishization.

Sure but Arabia has made limited stuff for ages, and hand painted is always more expensive. I'd be disappointed if a hand painted item wasn't more expensive. Their regular mugs are still reasonably priced

It's not about hand-made stuff in general. This is merch, not art. It's neither unique nor artful, it's a pre-made template, approved by the copyright holder, drawn on a factory-produced cup. No one forces me to spend 150$ on it, true, but no one can force me to consider it a valuable piece of Arabic craftsmanship, or even a great product.

It's a limited edition run of a hand painted art print on a mug. You declaring it's not art doesn't make it not art, just because it's on a factory mug. Art and merch are not mutually exclusive.

so if an artist uses a template to create multiple copies of the same thing, it's not art? any ceramic mug-makers I know use at the bare minimum a design reference. that doesn't make it not art.

Exactly!

When in doubt, make your own or come to 3rd party manufacturers like myself.

I’m assuming import fees are affecting it along with rarity of fabrication.

I went to get a groke mug that looked cool in photos and it currently a very rare piece going for hundreds on eBay.

If you’re UK, try looking for a local print shop who can do sublimation printing on ceramic, otherwise, DIY if you feel like it’s too expensive.
