Mod Announcement And the winner of the banner contest is...

u/beginning-sugar479!!!!

The biggest of all congratulations to them!

Also to u/Loud-Fisherman-5254 for participating!

And to everyone else who voted!

It was a very close call. Let me say it here how much we appreciate our participants for well, participating! Both of you had such cool designs and looking at the votes, I think the community will be happy with either banner.

Truly, a vote either way could have swung it. But we do indeed have a winner. It's a very nice banner and fits quite nicely with the vibes.

Again, massive thank you to everyone! Maybe we can do this again in 6 months? A year? Or the next time we get complaints. Either way we'll see.

- XOXO

Mod Announcement Effective Immediately: Discussions about the cast are now banned (again...)

Hi All,

Some of you won't be surprised by this. Some (or most...) will go "it's about time" but here it is. We recognise we should have done this sooner and that is our mistake. But as they say, the best time to start something is yesterday. The second best time is today.

So effective immediately:

All discussions about the cast is banned on this subreddit unless it relates to their role on Gossip Girl. New rule (Rule 10) has been created to report posts about the cast if they are posted.

What does that mean? It means that cast talk will no longer be permitted unless it's to do with their role on Gossip Girl. So for example:

"I loved how Blake played Serena here"

"As much as I love Chace, I really wasn't a fan of his line delivery here"

"Penn is great and his acting really shines through here!"

are all fine. Reminder these are just examples.

General discussions of the cast such as what their doing now, Instagram posts, red carpet appearances are now all banned.

Please do not report posts created before this point. We're not going to remove them as we're not going to punish people for this as we mods did not enforce this as strictly as we should have.

Now for some questions you may have:

"Can't you guys just do like a weekly thread or dedicate a day to talking about the cast?"

We could. And who knows? Maybe that is what we'll transition to. But for now we need to just ban it so that we can restore some civility here.

"It's really just Blake/Ed posts that attract the worst so just like, ban talk about them?"

That is true. But we have to be honest with ourselves: the negativity and fighting (including but not limited to multiple members, including the mods themselves, being harassed both in and out of this subreddit) is breaking out on almost every post. For example: comparisons with other cast members when they aren't warranted.

"Can we just ban negative posts and enforce a positive content only rule?"

We can foresee this being super hard to maintain. It's either going to turn into something people take advantage of such as wanting discussions of Ed's allegations to be banned (we're already at this stage believe us....) or a toxic/sarcastic positivity thing where people are being negative under a veneer of fake positivity.

And then we're back where we started: here.

"Speaking of, what about sexual assault allegations against Ed?"

There is a pinned post on this subreddit with links. Any discussions about it now will just result in us redirecting you guys to the thread instead.

"What you guys clearly need is more mods tbh"

We agree completely. We want this subreddit sorted first before we introduce people to moderating it. Wouldn't be fair to expect new people to sort this out. It's on us.

I'm sure some of you will have lots more questions. Please redirect them to modmail. This thread is being locked as it's an informative post and quite honestly, to prevent more infighting amongst yourselves based on whether or not you want this.

Thanks for reading this if you made it this far.

- The mods

OG Series I think the best phases of Serena and Blair in terms of growth and likability happens to be when they were both with Dan. Especially Blair, I loved seeing her vulnerable and more delicate side.

OG Series 2nd watch - Why can't Dan just keep his nose out of people's business?

Upvotes

I know everyone hates Dan around here, but I thought I'd throw my hat into the ring. Every episode just gets more aggrevating, with his 'moral compass' that he really doesn't have, that somehow makes him involved in everything, anyone else? rant over, sorry :)

NO SPOILERS PLEASE Chuck and Blair

I’m only on the beginning parts of season 4, the part where Chuck is back with that woman who saved his life in Prague. I actually really like them together and would ship them to be endgame. It seems like Chuck and Blair will end up with each other though (no spoilers please). While I don’t like Chuck and Blair in their own ways, I think they’re perfect for each other too in some ways. I just can’t get past the situation with Jack Bass, I really believe Blair did nothing wrong. She was being coerced. Chuck is so wrong for what he set up. And then when he thinks Blair stood him up, he goes and sleeps with Jenny. I’m sure they’re gonna write something in and make Blair forgive him for everything and they end up together, but I think it’d be nice if they move on from each other too.

OG Series Ivy, I am stunned Spoiler

Upvotes

I know that there has been such polarising opinions on Ivy, especially as why she was introduced and how CeCe left her so much in the will.

But, I am flabbergasted at how remarkably quick she came up with the tall tale in S5 E9! Telling the family that Max was blackmailing her over a s3x-tape is WILD. If you look closely, you can see Carol hiding a smirk 😄

The fact that they never even question her makes me think that extorting money in this way is familar and entirely plausible on the UES.

What are people's views on this?

Fan Content OG gossip girl fanfic classics?

hiya!

my neverending gossip girl fixation has yet to die out, and i am reaching a point where i'd like to try dipping a toe into GG fanfiction

when i get into fan-written works for any media i'm into, i like to start out with the most well-known ones.
this leads me to my question: are there any GG fanfics that are considered 'classics' in the fandom - whether that be newer ones, or ones that were written way back in the 2000s/early 2010s?

ao3 is the site i'm used to, and i'm not very well-acquainted with fanfiction.net, which was the leading site for fanfiction in the GG era as far as i'm aware. but i'm willing to go anywhere for GG fics! i just need the material lol

as long as it's written with a decent amount of nuance, i'm not too picky about genre or ships. i'm sapphic myself and i do tend to gravitate towards lesbian/wlw fanfic though, so if anyone knows any good blair x serena fics (or any other wlw pairings), send your recommendations my way please!

thank you 🙏

OG Series The costume design is so smart (S1 SAT episode)

Post image
73 Upvotes

Re-watching S1, and I loved this little detail of Nelly Yuki essentially wearing a knock-off version of Blair's outfit to take the SATs.

Creme blazer cinched at the waist, black skirt, high-necked black shirt with some light contrast. Nelly's is more ill-fitting and looks thrown-together, showing that she isn't in her natural style.

This is a brilliant way to show that Blair "won" her one-sided battle with Nelly. Nelly is no longer the teen-genius threatening Blair's academic standing, or the loner that's too focused for friends. She's now desperate to be "in" with her peer group, and she's a dorky follower trying to keep up. From this point on in the show, she never stops being this person.

I love how the show uses clothing to show power dynamics among the social groups. Serena putting her Chanel scarf around Blair's shoulders in S2 to show that "Queen Serena" is back, Dan "de-throning" Blair at NYU by removing her headband, etc.

OG Series Thoughts on Rufus and Lily's ending?

Thumbnail gallery
218 Upvotes

I feel like we got robbed like WTF was that ending to their relationship????

Rufus is crazy for choosing ivy like I loved Rufus before that he was one of my favorites but EW that was so creepy??? He thought she was his niece for like a year? And she fucked over Lily ofc Lily is mad? Why did he act like Lily was heartless for that?

Also WILLIAM?!? Did we all forget he was drugging her and lying to her to get closer to her and her family? Taking advantage of her whole she thought she had cancer? That's crazy why does everyone forget about that except Eric but Eric disappears the last season.

Idk I thought we were so robbed it felt like such a waste but I'll sacrifice Rufus and Lily for Blair and Chuck to be together any day of the week

Also wtf happened to Scott? I was excited to see him after he left but nope he's gone forever ig

OG Series Worst storyline Spoiler

I’m curious to hear some thoughts on this and what maybe you all think is the worst story line of the show. For me it was Serena and Ben dating. I always skip those scenes because I find it so irritating. It went against the whole plot before hand and the fact that he was convicted for doing nothing wrong and then they date after that? No. I’m sorry. I also thought it was really important to the story that he was the one guy in the entire show that actually had ZERO INTEREST and said NO to Serena.

OG Series Initially Dan and Serena were the central couple of the show but by the end its all about Chuck and Blair

Thumbnail gallery
307 Upvotes

Dan and Serena really were the centre of the show in season 1. The season begins with the two of them and the season finale is their breakup. And throughout the season we see them have their first date, dance at cotillion, and more.

I think its funny how then the shows finale is basically entirely about chuck and blair instead. We see them get married and reference their past in a sentimental way.

Meanwhile dan had just published a hate piece on serena to finally gain her respect. Which barely made sense bc from the start she was the only one who didnt care about him being from brooklyn😭. And even worse he is gg. The fans of the show from s1 got done so dirty. Its so sad to see how all the og derena fans see is a flash forward of them getting married 5 years later😭??

Also I would like to add derena could not compete w what chairs connection became. Blair was engaged and still tethered to chuck. It is proven that they would choose each other over anyone else. Meanwhile dan and serena truly repeatedly chose others. Like when serena chose Ben donovan. And was stuck between dan and nate.

And as much as i love rufus and lily i think their relationship inevitably changed serena and dans dynamic. Which we really see in s3a where derena are truly friendly and have no feelings between eachother. So its weird that the writers gave us rufus and lily the entire show just to ruin them towards the end for a derena endgame??

OG Series My Thoughts/Rating Of Gossip Girl Ships

Hate: Dan X Blair (I’m sorry it was so cringe could not watch), Dan X Vanessa (they were lowkey almost siblings it was weird), Ivy and Rufus (what was this?? What the heck), Ivy and William (again who did this??), Chuck and Jenny (um episode one)

I mean It Could’ve Been Worse: Serena’s random guys (lowkey couldn’t tell them apart), Nate’s random girls (same thing), Bart and Lily (they were both cold and boring woah they made each other even more so, crazy), Georgiana and Dan (what was this?? It was entertaining though)

It Worked Until It Didn’t: Blair and Louis (it was like a fairy tale and then…), Serena and Tripp (I liked it and then he left her in a car after an accident so um that was not okay)

They Were Chill: Nate and Vanessa (they kind of worked and the best out of Vanessa’s relationships I guess), Dan and Olivia (I kind of shipped honestly, then there was a threesome and well…), Serena and Nate (I mean besides the whole first season and preshow it was fine), Blair and Nate (they could’ve been good but they didn’t have any chemistry it felt so forced)

Endgame Worthy: Nate and Jenny (the chemistry was good okay? It was only a two year age gap and I liked the relationship), Dan and Serena (season one got it right these two were meant to be together, we’re not even addressing who was gossip girl because I’m in denial ok?), Georgiana and Jack (they were legit made for each other)

BEST: Chuck and Blair (I’m not explaining they just are, I don’t care what anyone says)

EDIT: fixed some of the names bc I lowkey forgot them sorry

OG Series Dans book being a love letter to blair and an attack on serena will never make sense to me

Especially considering when he wrote it blair had just banished his sister from the city😭?? Moreso blair was the one who constantly attacked him for not being “one of them”. And he brings up both of these things in his sequel of the book??😭

I would have understood if Blair was not included or given the same treatment as Serena but the juxtaposition between the way he wrote about the two of them is wild.

OG Series Dan and Blair

All I see is people rooting for chuck and blair and saying they were meant to be and they were the perfect endgame but I disagree sooo muchhh. Dan and Blair were in my opinion the best couple in the show and I just really wish the writers had made them endgame. Maybe its cause I love a good enemies to lovers but I always felt like they were so good for each other. They brought out the best in each other and were actually so cute, unlike blair being with that harasser chuck 🙄 anyone else agree?

The closest I can think of would be probably Inventing Anna? Are there really that many con artists in the upper society that the show got inspired by?

OG Series I HATE HATE HATE Chuck!

On like my 100th rewatch of Gossip Girl and omg my hate for Chuck continues to grow he is seriously the worst. I genuinely can’t believe people like his character besides his somewhat witty lines.

I cannot get past the fact that he literally sexually assaults Serena and Jenny in the same episode and the entire show just brushes over it. I honestly don’t like when people just cough it up to being the pilot episode like fine but it’s there and obviously I’m going to include that in my perception of him and it’s not like his character was too different in the beginning like he’s always just being a perv. And call me harsh but you know better at 16 and I don’t think there’s ever a “redemption” after assaulting girls even if you’re also a minor. Unfortunately, these pervert male characters are common in shows but I think it just makes it so much worse because he’s literally an assaulter, it would be a different thing if he was just making unnecessary jokes. Also, it’s not like he changed that much because he even sleeps with Jenny in season 3, his 16 year old step sister. Not to mention constantly treating Blair like a replaceable insect and stringing her along his drama. Cheating on her with Jenny, selling her to Jack (Also a sexual assaulter who literally forced himself onto Lily like the season before??💀)in exchange for the hotel and not even feeling guilty about that because “she went on her own” even tho he manipulated her the whole time into doing it, when he punches the glass wall barely missing her, and SO MUCH MORE!

They are like textbook definition of toxic and co-dependent, anyone who ships them together either watched with their eyes closed or have serious disturbing definitions of what a relationship should be. I know that Chuck gets a lot of hate, not unwarranted either LOL, but does anyone like SERIOUSLY hate him? I just have to constantly skip whenever he’s on screen.
