Character Discussion - General Rory being a hypocrite

I am rewatching the show as one does and I remember Rory being angry at Dean and lecturing him about dropping out of college to do more work. She can be pissed at him for that and judge him when she two season later takes time off from Yale after being told “she doesn’t have it”. It just really annoyed me, especially with how AYITL turned out, maybe he was doing her a favor.

She can tell people what to do with their lives and judge them but when she does it, it’s magically okay??

Character Discussion - General Lorelai and Luke

I don’t get why Lorelai lied so much to Luke and hid things. I’m talking up until he hid April from her, which was totally wrong and I dislike Luke for doing that, but up until that point she hid so many things from him, even they were not dating. She hid her relationships, her going out on dates, he lied to Jason only to not take him to the diner where Luke could see him and then when they finally started dating she hid almost every encounter she had with Cristopher, the lunch, the getting drunk with him and only told him because she was pressured by the context. I get the idea of not wanting to hurt the feelings of the other person, but at first, they were friends, so i think you need to be honest with friends and have boundaries, and then, they were in a relationship so why are you doing things that might hurt your partner’s feelings in the first place? And then not being honest and direct about them?

I think somewhere in the show they say shes a Taurus, but I'm a sagittarius and I relate to her so much.

OS Discussion 3 biggest misconceptions about Dean among the fandom

  1. that he was a "stalker" or "creepy".

Facts:

- Dean approaches Rory at school to help her lift her books. As they start talking he reveals that while at school as an underage teenager, he noticed her before and he noticed what she was reading before. However, he did not approach her to talk immediately at that first notice.
It is rather typical for most people, especially teenagers, to need some time before they gather courage and go talk to someone attractive.

- Dean never follows her home, or anywhere, without her consent. He simply notices a pretty girl at school.

- Rory and Lane both admit calling landlines of their crushes (Dean and Dave) and hanging up on the guys. And not knowing whether the guys like them - Dean is never shown doing this, he is actually surprised about this behavior.

  1. that he was "violent" to the point that Rory was "scared" of him.

Facts:

- Rory is often indeed worried that Dean will get angry - but always only in regards to jealousy of Tristan or Jess, and as she plainly says out loud to Lorelai, she expects him ONLY to break up with her, not to physically harm her (instead of breaking up, he gave her his corn)

- Rory never demonstrates any typical telltale signs of being scared of physical violence, which are typically used on screen. In real life, of course, that fear is not always visible, but on screen, we need to know what type of fear there is.
Lorelai's face,
when Richard grabs Strobe, is the closest to us seeing a woman being scared of violence on Gilmore Girls.

- Rory, however, has no problem running after a fighting Jess and Dean and yelling at them to stop. She never flinches in a way that is typical for fictional characters on screen to signal actual fear of violence.

- Dean is physically assaulted by a grown up Luke at the age of 16 (according to a yelling Lorelai) as a "punishment" for breaking up with Rory when he felt absolutely rejected by her. He is treated harshly twice by Richard for not being rich. He is addressed rudely by Ms Patty while she is addressing Rory nicely, as they both wake up at Ms Patty's place.

He is being often taunted by Tristan and Jess.
What happens on screen is Dean gradually experiencing painful events that create insecurities in every human, and the many reasons to feel insecure, unsafe, jealous just keep coming. And this never stops for him, the only way to get out is to leave Rory.

  1. That he was "too needy".

Facts:

- Rory tells him that she is cancelling totally reasonable plans of being with her boyfriend on Saturday, due to extra activities regarding Harvard and promising him to have time in the evening. Then, in the evening, she again has no time and freaks out about someting that is 2 years in the future. His reaction of getting hurt by this is completely human and normal, especially for a barely 17year old.

- His reactions to Tristan and Jess always taunting him and Rory giving reasons to why she is around them are completely normal for a teenage boy. If he was in his 30s, a more calm reaction would be expected but even then, feeling upset about such situation is just human.

General Discussion Lobster Pot Pie

I’ve been up since about 3am my time, traveled for about 9 hours, finally arrived at hotel (work conference). I kinda neglected to eat, or pack snacks. I’m sure there’s food downstairs if I only could change, fix my hair, put on makeup, and be ready to interact with coworkers and clients.

So…looking at the in room dining options. One of the restaurants here has a lobster pot pie. It is *$155*. I lived in New Hampshire for a while - but I was a poor college kid, so lobster wasn’t something I had until years later (I didn’t have a lobster roll until 2020 🫣).

I’m hoping that’s for a whole pie - but is that a normal price? (If Sookie made it and it’s up to Emily Gilmore’s standards… I still wouldn’t pay that much 🤣). Oh - the lobster roll is $38, which also seems kinda ridiculous?

(And yes, now I’m even hungrier, and no closer to being presentable to my work crowd).

ETA: Meant to specify - these are the restaurant prices, not including room service markup. And my frugal side will probably win; I can throw on my hoodie and walk up the block to the Publix.

Critical Character Discussion Team Jess Is Overrated (Sorry, Not Sorry)

Upvotes

I know this is probably an unpopular opinion around here, but after multiple rewatches, I still can’t get behind Team Jess.

Every time I rewatch, I’m reminded that Jess basically spent an entire season trying to wedge himself into Rory and Dean’s relationship. I know Dean and Rory had their own issues, but Jess was absolutely pursuing someone who was already in a relationship and seemed perfectly fine with creating tension between them until it finally fell apart. I always find it funny when Jess later acts jealous and possessive about Dean because… sir, that is literally how you got here.

I also think people romanticize Jess because of his intelligence, sarcasm, and eventual growth, but teenage Jess was honestly kind of awful. Yes, he had a difficult upbringing, and I feel for him. But having a rough childhood doesn’t automatically excuse treating everyone around you badly. Luke bent over backwards for him and Jess responded by being rude, ungrateful, and hostile to practically everyone who tried to help him.

Then there’s the bedroom scene at Kyle’s party, which I find genuinely disturbing every time I watch it. Rory clearly tells him to stop, and he doesn’t immediately respect that boundary. I know fans debate the scene endlessly, but it always makes me uncomfortable when people try to brush it off or blame Rory somehow. That scene alone makes it very hard for me to view their relationship as romantic.

And speaking of their relationship, Jess was just not a good boyfriend. He was unreliable, secretive, communicated terribly, disappeared without explanation, and often made Rory feel anxious rather than supported. So many people focus on the chemistry, but chemistry doesn’t automatically make a healthy relationship.

Even later, when he shows up with the whole “Why did you drop out of Yale?” speech, I’ve never viewed it as the earth-shattering moment some fans make it out to be. Jess knew Rory for a relatively short period of her life. Meanwhile, the people who had actually known her for years had been expressing concern too. I get why the scene is memorable, but I’ve always thought fans give Jess way too much credit for it.

I do think adult Jess becomes a much better person than teenage Jess, and I genuinely like his character growth. But liking his growth as a character and thinking he was a good boyfriend for Rory are two completely different things.

So yeah, after every rewatch, I end up in exactly the same place: I like Jess as a character, but I’ll never understand why so many people act like Rory and Jess were some great love story.

OS Discussion 4 most popuIar misconceptions about Rory that some fans seem to often spread around a lot:

  1. That she was never criticized by anyone before she met Mitchum.

Facts:

She is criticized in every opening episode of every single one of the first five seasons by some adult: Lorelai, Richard, Lorelai, Taylor and Lorelai.

She is criticized by Doyle so harshly, that she even says that maybe she peaked in high school. Then by the ballerina for bodyshaming her in the roast, (and a bit by Lorelai who points out to her that people only talk mean but she is the only one who writes mean, too), then by Doyle again, for wanting to make things better and writing something positive about the ballerina.

She is criticized by headmaster Charlston and the guidance counselor for being a "loner", by Lorelai for telling Emily about the termites, by headmaster Charlston for fighting with Paris, by the Yale professor who gave her the D, by Jess and Logan for being too sheltered, by Marty for being too naive, by Dean for obsessing too much about Harvard and not having time for him, by Lane in season 1 for not having time for her, by Emily in season 1 for not appreciating the birthday party,

by Lorelai for lying to her to help Lane in season 1.

She criticized herself for letting Jess treating her like dirt, for not telling Dean about Tristan, for failing at Chilton, for failing at Yale.

  1. That she was always "chased after" by boys and everyone always loved her until she met Logan

Facts:

She was rejected by the guy whom she asked out in the laundry room and later she found out that he barely even remembered her. He had no idea why was she mentioning the laundry room to him. Later, she was ignored by the guy in Florida, until Paris kissed her, which was the only thing he actually liked enough to approach her. She was not treated very nicely by

the guy who Emily saw in diapers - he ditched her for his friends. She had an awkward date with the "preppy" guy, and Luke and Lorelai had to advise her on the phone.

She was ghosted and dumped by Jess. She got dumped 3 times by Dean. (Sure, he felt rejected by her all 3 times, but she still was the one to get the official dumping three times).

By the time she met Logan, she had a very good idea about what it feels like to be rejected or not chased.

  1. That she was actually perfect or almost perfect before season 4 or before season 3.

Facts:

Season 1: She pilot, she chose to not go to Chilton just because she just met a cute guy, Dean. They are not even dating yet. This makes Lorelai yell "does he have a motorcycle? Because if you'r gonna throw your life again, he'd better have a motorcycle!"... By the end of the pilot, she changes her mind back because of learning what Lorelai went though for her.

She ran away from home after a fight, lettig Sookie, Max and Lorelai desperately looking for her - she hid at her grandparents' house without even leaving a note for her mom.

She lied to Lorelai about helping Lane to go on the double date.

Season 2: She cheated on Dean in the finale of season 2, at Sookie's wedding.

She skipped school and missed Lorelai's graduation to go see Jess in NYC while still being offcially with Dean.

... Of course, she had lots of great moments, too, being a mostly good person wanting to do what is right. But she was never perfect.

  1. that she thinks everything should be handed to her, everything comes easy for her.

Facts:

She struggled in Chilton and had to put in hard work, she got her first D at Chilton, first year. She also struggled in her first year at Yale, but still made it into second year in season 5.

She stressed about final exams at Chilton so badly that Lorelai was afraid to tell her that Jess had left.

She changed a boring story that Paris gave her to write into an amazing one.

She tried over and over to impress Doyle who at first did not like her writing a few times. Then she struggled to convince him to fix her situation with the ballerina but she was not allowed to do that.

She wondered out loud in the car in front of Jess if she is brave enough to work in dangerous places.

She wondered to Lorelai if she is too sheltered after Logan called her that.

She came from the construction site in s2 having learned stuff about how to build a house and flexing her knowledge to Kirk, but in the morning she did not know anything about construction yet.

*honorable mention:
That she was always financially privileged. Not only did she grow up in a shed, and then with a mother who had to go beg grandparents for money, but also,
she is so broke in season 5 that Lorelai forces a 20dollar bill upon her and asks around for a job for her.
In season 4 she notices that her mom is buying "real food" and not paying for cable, because her mom is struggling financially due to the recently opened Dragonfly.
Rory refuses to accept money for Yale on "too easy" terms, too. She is privileged, but also knows money struggles that Logan simply doesn't.

OS Discussion Examples of Rory growing and learning from her mistakes

  1. After crushing on Jess and not admitting it to Dean or even to herself in the Lorelai's graduation episode, she learned from this. She told Marty up front that she likes Logan, she did not give Marty false hope.

  2. After assuming that the laundry room guy is spreading rumors about her, she did not assume anything about Marty's feelings. She waited for him to come out clean about his feelings for her.

  3. After dropping out of Yale, she at first almost admitted to Paris that it was only because of Mitchum. Later, she went right back to Yale and only lost one semester.
She got herself a job all by herself.

  4. After lying to Lorelai to help Lane in season 1, she never did it again, they always helped Lane without secrets among each other. She called Lorelai directly in season 4, when Lane unexpectedly showed up at Yale in the middle of the night.
Lorelai did not get angry this time, because it was not Rory's fault.

  5. After experiencing what it is like owing to her grandparents for Yale, she chose to have her father to pay for it instead - she finally saw the point Lorelai made in the termites episode in season 2. However,
even in the termites episode, when Rory could not fully relate to Lorelai's reasons, she still was willing to admit, that Lorelai was right to get angry,
since she is the adult whose responsibility is to get the money from somewhere and so far she never has failed in providing for Rory.

Then in season 6, Rory finally learned personally what is it like ,and agreed for her father to help her out of the debt to the grandparents.

General Discussion Some complaints as a first-time viewer (pls no spoilers!) FYI I LOVE THE SHOW

I’m on Season 4 Episode 8 right now and I have some opinions (you don’t have to agree obvi)

-When Paris shows up at Yale I nearly rolled my eyes. Her character genuinely annoys me and I was excited for Rory to explore new friendships at Yale, feels a little lazy?

-Why so much of Kirk?!!! They are forcing him on us. I think the bit he plays is funny but wayy too much screen time IMO

-As a hopeless romantic, I need more romance in the show. For me, it’s what engaged me so heavily in Season 1 and I feel like the show is lacking it at this point… Lorelai’s sudden fling with Max in season 3 felt like a bit lazy too

-They gave us so much about Christopher’s new baby with his wife and they haven’t mentioned a single thing about her since she’s been born? I feel like that dynamic would’ve been more interesting to touch on

-I can’t believe after everything Rory goes to Yale instead of Harvard!

OS Discussion HOT TAKE JESS BURNED THE INN

Post image
570 Upvotes

It's very interesting timing that he left for CA so quickly after the Inn burned. Did he set fire to it? Was he using his forklift from Walmart on something untoward and the Inn was caught in the cross fire? Was that why Jimmy came to see him?? Was he involved?! The world may never know.

ETA guys this is a joke 😂 I was up at 2 am and Gilmore girls is my sleep show, so i listen to it while i fall asleep and this absurd thought came into my brain when I was listening to Rory talk to Jess through the window at Mrs. Kim's about how they thought it was a faulty wire.

General Discussion Lane’s honeymoon and pregnancy Spoiler

This popped into my head when I was dealing with insomnia at 3am.

Lane and Zack wait until their honeymoon to have sex and that happens in Mexico. Lane gets back a week or so later. Rory goes to visit her the day after she gets back and Lane has the “stomach bug” which turns out to be her pregnancy. I’m sorry but morning sickness one week after having sex?

Implantation usually takes place about 6-12 days after conception. Morning sickness typically doesn’t start until 6 weeks after conception. I guess that they could have found out she was pregnant because she had the stomach bug but it is heavily implied that she has morning sickness and not the stomach bug. But in reality-that timeline is weak at best.

General Discussion Zack is funny

now I will always be team Dave but I can’t help but like Zack. I know he did a lot of kinda bad things such as break up the band and stuff but I just enjoyed him purely because of how he brought comic relief to the show. his lines were so funny especially in season 3 I laugh every time he sings the bulwark song. and even later he’s just a goofy guy. I don’t really take Zack and lane’s relationship too seriously because it probably was lazy writing but even so they were funny together and I think they matched each others energy quite well - lane being quite stressy and Zack being laid back. I dunno I just enjoyed watching their scenes

wondering what your fave scenes of him are

General Discussion What do you think everyone’s up to in 2026?

Here’s my go:

LORELAI: Married to Luke, works at her Inn and has two others in nearby areas. Michele runs one, a new woman named Lorelei owns the other (jokes were made, the fifth Lorelai, etc.) Paul Anka passed away and now she owns two cats named Loompa and Doompetidoo (because Rory has a cat named Oompa). She has also experimented with letting her hair go partly grey to see how she can make it style with her winter clothing (even in summer) and has cut it to her shoulders for practicality. On occasion, Lorelai teaches managing classes in Hartford with Sookie.

RORY: She lives in Hartford and is married to a man named Tommy. She had a child with Logan and named him Laurence Lee (Laurie for short, she calls him the fourth Lorelai), and although Logan is a great father he is often away chasing whatever he’s always been chasing. His family are a part of Laurie’s life but yet to interfere with inheritance, etc. since Logan is married to someone else. Rory has carved out a respected niche in the publishing world as a literary curator and special editions editor, known for overseeing beautifully produced collector’s editions of classic novels. For Lorelai’s sixtieth, she will produce a special book on the Dragonfly Inn’s history. She also previously wrote a novel on Stars Hollow which, although not a bestseller, is much loved at the Stars Hollow Bookstore and always in the display window.

EMILY: Fully retired, she spends her days in Nantucket but bought a smaller holiday house back in Hartford for when she visits. She spends her time with a group of other retired ladies in Nantucket who have become her dearest (and only) friends — an eclectic group she never would have deemed worthy of her friendship twenty years earlier. Lorelai and Luke still visit her every few months and Lorelai speaks to her on the phone every week. When she can, she helps with the Dragonfly Inn due to her connections.

LUKE: Happily living with Lorelai and still working at the diner, although he has hired a second manager so he can have more time off. (Caesar left for New Orleans to be a cook many years earlier) He often visits April in Maine with her partner (they have a spare room for him and Lorelai). Him and TJ often spend time working on fixing things unofficially around Stars Hollow.

LANE: Has moved to Middletown with Zach and the kids for Zach’s career. She teaches middle school music and plays with the band on the weekends (Kwan took over from Gil, and Brian of course moved to Middletown with Lane and Zach). Mrs. Kim lives with them (they have a big house) after Mr. Kim died.

SOOKIE: Still lives in Stars Hollow with Jackson, and is feeling lonely now that her eldest has gone to college (Yale!). She still works at the Dragonfly Inn part time, overseeing the new cook Woodrow, who has a love-hate relationship with Michele. Sookie mentors young High School students who come to the Inn when she cooks to train them. She and Jackson went on a Freshfoods Cruise for their 20th anniversary.

MICHELE: Is a manager at the Windsor’s Dragonfly Inn. He separated from his partner many years ago when his partner got cold feet about having kids. He and new chef Woodrow have a will-they-won’t-they bickering relationship going on, and nobody knows what’s going on. He adopted a child from France who he is concerned about now, because at age eight, young Louis is fascinated by North Korea, and seems to loathe Celine Dion. He also has a toy poodle named Franco who he takes to work with him and hides in the closet every day.

KIRK: He had a baby with Lulu, and named her Roberta. They bought the Wickham House. He took over Sophie’s Music Shop. It is now “Kirk and Lulu’s Magnificently Ridiculiferous Jamatorium” where they actually just sell everything and anything (the place is jam-packed, possibly a safety hazard, thus-its name).

PARIS: She is now in her third husband (the second one died during sex). She is now married to a 30-year-old stunt-man named Bryan who has helped her stay limber with exercises. They have a blended family and she teaches her step-children how to fence. She lives in New York and runs her own fertility clinic.

JESS: Onto his seventh novel. Making ends meet. Married to a woman named Heidi and has a boy and a girl, now 9 and 5, named William and Kimberley.

BABETTE: Still living next door with Maurey.

MISS. PATTY: Retired and bound to a walker, but still a big part of the community. Her dance studio is now just a community centre.

CHRISTOPHER: Who cares.

GYPSY: Early retirement, turns out she was making quite a living. Moved to a larger house just on the outskirts of Stars Hollow but still helps with community stuff. Happily single.

MITCHUM: Died of a heart attack in 2022.

SOPHIE: Retired, lives opposite Lorelai and Luke. Lorelai allows her to practice with her band in her garage whenever they are in town.

The episode where they see each other in the square, & fight each other. It’s so funny! But what I don’t understand.. is why they didn’t end up with ANY marks, & none of the town knew about it. They know everything. Lmao. But I’m more stuck on the fact it didn’t even look like they fought! There was plenty of hits to the face. They should’ve ended up with black eyes & marks all over the place. HAHAH. I realized this & decided I just had to post about it! What are your thoughts on them fighting?

I dont think ive laughed that loud or that much at the Gilmores fighting in a long time. I love the camera work too. When Rory was arguing with Richard and Emily and the camera would turn back and forth like it was Lorelai's head just added to the dramedy of the while thing. Best Friday night dinner ever. Has anybody else noticed how beautiful their porch is?? They have so so many flowers and plants growing like EVERYWHERE… I know they would not be taking care of it (Lorelei and Jason talking about that plant and photosynthesis) and if they have a gardener this does not look like it would be cheap and it wouldn’t make sense for them to be paying a lot of money for that. I love their house so much but it seems a bit unrealistic for them

General Discussion Lorelai should have accepted Christopher’s offer to pay her back for Chilton

When Christopher came into money and offered to pay for Chilton, Lorelai should have accepted the money.

He owed her for half of it, at least. And if I’m understanding correctly, he never paid child support so he owed her for that as well.

She was a new business owner and that money could have really helped her.

Also, Rory should have accepted money from Christopher for the first two years of Yale as well so she could pay her grandparents back immediately (I know they wouldn’t actually make her pay it back but I’m assuming she insisted).
