Recommendations The DELCO Homeowner/Renter resource guide thread

We have gotten a lot of repeat posts and the Reddit search feature sucks so we wanted to create a resource for everyone here. The point is to keep discussion to here so we can use this thread to point recommendations out.

In this thread I will write a comment, please reply with recommendations and/or avoidances (everyone is free to start a comment with something that was missed).

Please only upvote the recommendation if you have experience with them!!

/r/delco_politics /r/delco_politics for prolonged political discussion for locals

Hello everyone, the sub historically has had a no politics rule. This rule was mostly respected and voted to keep it. Obviously, this has not been fully enforced recently. We have tried to allow as much discussion as possible but it gets to the point where it’s an unfortunate screaming match at each other. Not to mention all the you know what hats that apparently have tags or bots set up to flood these threads without any post history in the sub. You don’t see these due to the spam filter but our poor asses have to read every single one of these comments and determine if they are brigading or just saying plain stupid shit, my iq has gone down. Anyways enough complaining.

Introducing a new sub, /r/delco_politics for now we are leaving it open for all political discussion. We prefer that users post their thread there then crosspost here. Discussion will be restricted to /r/delco_politics. These will be determined as posted, we will still allow local politics posts here, if they get too off topic or going to the national level, that’s when we will lock and move discussion to the politics sub. The reason why we lock them up is because insults start getting thrown around, don’t forget we are a local sub, you could potentially be talking to someone living on your street. We are all angry but calling each other names is not the way to go. Please use the report feature as that helps us. If you get a mute or ban it is because you have a long mod log and we have been keeping notes.

Finally we are looking for a new mod for to help out with /r/delco_politics if you are interested send us a mod mail. As always we are open to feedback!

Question Good hidden gem restaurants around Radnor area?

I don’t mind driving but thought I’d be more specific in terms of location.

I’m going to be celebrating a birthday soon but tired of the same old, same old. And good places that I need to try? My family tends to prefer steak houses and stuff. Also love Italian, BBQ or just a good burger. I’m not choosy and open to anything where the food is good. I’m also a shameless dessert person, but who isn’t.

Moving to Rutledge

My boyfriend and I are moving this summer from Northeast Philly and Wilmington respectively. In our search I found areas of Delco I never knew existed (was really only familiar with Media and what borders DE or can be seen from the SEPTA Wilmington line). Living in Wilmington my whole life, I know the best routes here to avoid rush hour or school traffic, what gas stations sell the cheapest items, what grocery stores are nice but not too expensive, etc.

Looking for local input to the nuances near us and recommendations for good places to go for what we enjoy. So please tell me what’s the least congested way to to get to 476N as well as 95S from Rutledge, what gas station and grocery stores are best, where to go for a good beer selection (we don’t mind dives but I’m a ipa hipster), what’s the best local place to hike or walk outdoors, what places have trivia and/or live music (and parking). TIA!

Okay, im just going to come out and ask; what the hell is the deal with the lettuce store in Lansdowne? Ive never seen them open, they advertise as being a hydroponic green shop but that isn't code words for selling weed ( I found that out the hard way)

Why is there a store that just sells lettuce, but they're always closed and the lettuce costs more than what it would at the Aldi literally across the street.

Hydroponic lettuce also isnt code for a place to buy Marijuana. Ive never seen anyone in there or the store open and I moved here around the start of Covid.

their online store is always sold out of everything but romaine and I had to download an app to even view it.

Whats the deal with the lettuce store?

We're interested in getting a shed for storage. We'd like to have a "full service" installation where they also prep the ground/base before building. Any advice on where to go, dos and don'ts, etc. would be very welcome!

Question Bodhi Real Estate

Does anyone here have experience with them? We moved to Ardmore (just inside the county line) in August and have had a pretty decent experience overall, but our hot water heater went out last week and I've put in a maintenance request as well as called multiple times but haven't heard anything back yet. Previously when we've needed repairs they've been responsive so I don't know if it's just a one time thing or if this is going to take a while to resolve. Thanks!

Question Is it safe to take a job and work in Chester?

I have a phone screen on Friday for an industrial/technical job in Chester, PA and was concerned about Chester, given its reputation.

I grew up in the Parsippany area in NJ, went to college in Newark. I moved from NJ to CA (Bay Area) in 2020 and I currently work in San Francisco. I really miss the East Coast and I am desperately trying to leave California and move back to the East Coast. I love PA.

How safe is Chester actually for someone just commuting into an industrial facility? Note that this is shift work and I think I may have to work at night.

Is it safe to:
getting food during lunch
sitt at red lights
park at work
gas stations
car break-ins
getting bothered walking into a facility getting mugged

I heard there is nothing to walk to so I think I would have to bring lunch to work daily since it does not sound safe to leave the workplace. I think this facility has parking at least I will not have to take public transit.

Is it really worse than Newark, NJ and Oakland, CA? That's the way people seem to describe it. Also I am a suburbanite type of person and only would come to Chester for work, but live in a comfy suburb (far enough to be affordable).
