I like having kids occasionally tap the mat just because "make sure you can reach the floor" is a lot easier for new kids to conceptualize than just, "stay low" when it comes to keeping a proper stance. The idea that you should specify get on all fours before hitting a low single feels weird.
His reasoning of wanting a hard stop and go rather than having to decelerate and change directions sounds nice on paper, but that wind up give you more explosive power, and if you're faking your level changes like you're supposed to be anyway, it's not actually wasting any time.
I donāt necessarily have a problem with putting your hands on the mat, but framing it as āitās a bad level change if you donāt touch the matā is just silly and wrong imo
