Never Tear Us Apart
I am at a restaurant on Block Island in the USA, literally ONE DAY (!) after booking a trip to Australia for April of next year and praying Port is at home while I'm there. "Never Tear Us Apart" just started playing at the restaurant I'm at. I have literally never once heard this song in the wild before.
IT'S A SIGN. I hope.

POWER!
I hope ya get to a game AND we win.
Usually Port fans are born into the team (fam supports them). What's your story?

Buddy of mine and I always used to watch the AFL Grand Final back when we were in college because it was such an oddity to us and it was on at midnight lol... That was my introduction to the game.
So then a few years ago my wife and I were making plans to visit our friends who live in Goolwa Beach, the husband a Richmond fan and the wife a Port fan. I REALLY wanted to go to a game while we were out there but it was going to be during the finals. So with Adelaide off the table since our friend is a Port supporter, I followed the entire season really really closely absolutely praying Port would finish 1, 2, 5, or 6 so they would host finals the week we were out there.
🍐 finished 2nd!! ...And I got to go see us get absolutely launched into the sun by Geelong, which was obviously not fun lol but after living and dying with the results all year I was fully hooked. I also really loved the city when I visted. And it also doesn't hurt that I think this is probably the most exciting sport humans have come up with.
It's so incredibly difficult to watch the games live out here but I wake up early/stay up late when I can. We're in the midst of a tough couple seasons but you can see it starting to come together (last week's regression notwithstanding). Can't wait to be back out there next season and hoping the timing works out!

Glad to have you back here in Adelaide 🫡 though that geelong final was indeed horrendous lol

Great story! I was kinda right. No one just picks Port without some kind of connection. My Dad was the weights trainer for Port Magpies in the 90s. It's in my blood
When I was in my 20s (also in the 90s) I bought a campervan so I could camp and surf at Goolwa and Victor Harbor on the weekends. Nice area.

Oh wow that's great -- yeah, I didn't want to just pick a random team; I was glad to at least piggyback off my friend being a supporter anyway.
It's just beautiful down there. I really love South Australia. Last time the first day we were out there my friends took us out for a meat pie & Farmer's Union iced coffee and we rocked up to the beach and that really set the tone. They also lived in Coober Pedy for a while and while we never did get to visit them while they were there, it looks otherworldly.

Coober Pedy is over an 8 hour drive from Adelaide. My wife wants to go there the next time we're in Adelaide because she thinks it's close.
When you see on r/afl someone looking for a team to follow, no one says Port, no one.

My connection was that my dad is a Crows fan so that meant I had to be a brat and go for Port. Best choice ever though.

Great surf at Goolwa and their local footy club are the Magpies, just need them to win some games!
Oh yeah, great cockles at Goolwa too!
