Support/Advice Burning and pain after clotrimazole suppository
Hi everyone,
I used a clotrimazole vaginal suppository for a suspected yeast infection, and ever since then I’ve been experiencing burning, irritation, and soreness in the vaginal area.
The thing is, I didn’t have this kind of pain or burning before using it — it only started after I took it.
It’s especially worse during sex. The area feels very sensitive, irritated, and painful.
I’m not sure if this is a normal side effect…
Has anyone experienced this?
How long did it last, and did anything help relieve it?
Any advice would really help 🙏

Did you ever test positive for yeast? It can cause issues I have read. It can be harsh on the delicate skin. See a gynecologist and maybe ask for an exam.

Yes I did. And I have also done that! Nothing to be found…

Did they do any further tests such as q-tip test? I think technically it is too soon to call it vulvodynia. I have read it has to be ongoing for 3 months.

Yes, did not have this issue before!
Vulvodynia is just a stupid thing doctors will diagnose you with, when they can't find anything else. All such diagnoses in the vagina occur because of something underlying behind it (that has caused it)

That is somewhat true. You can be diagnosed with vulvodynia and it can be due to hormones for example. I don’t know how similar our situations might be but mine started with non-albican yeast however this might have been an accidental finding and not actually causing symptoms. I do actually have pain and burning but I do see red spots and damaged skin. A gynecologist brought up vulvodynia but it’s just too soon to jump to that before rhe biopsy results. Mine has been on going for 3 months now.

I do think the mucous membranes are irritated. I had the same candida type. It started after it, and I’m also a bit red down there

To be fair mine was already red and burning even before the cream. But I have read many times on this sub of other people’s experiences with topical creams causing more issues such as vulvodynia but from memory they had used them for a longer time.

Burning is normal upon first insertion (depending on how sensitive you are) but it shouldn't last a week. Also, it's possible that the suppository didn't do the trick and that's why you're still having discomfort. I'd go back to the doctor. And i suggest refraining from intercourse until you've seen the doctor and for at least 7 days after treatment (or until symptoms are gone, but at least 7 days.)

ahh that makes a lot of sense! hope you got the treatment you needed and are feeling better. i've only had it once and it was no fun and it also took awhile for them to figure out the issue :)

Did you get a treatment for it? And did you feel better fast after?

It was a long time ago but yes they gave me medication (i think antibiotics i cannot remember) and within a week i felt better. Didn't risk intercourse until i knew it was completely cleared

Ohh okey. How long did you wait before intercourse after completing the antibiotic.
And also when you had it, what were your symptoms?

you're going to want to refrain during the treatment and then for 7 days after you've finished the medication. It was uncomfortable and itchy, and the off smell was a huge indicator for me.

Did you feel some discomfort or pain during intercourse when you had it?

Did they confirm the infection? I don’t understand why they would only suspect it when there’s so many testing options.
I would personally stop it for several days and then take the Evvy test. It takes a few weeks to come in, but it’ll tell you everything in your vaginal biome - good and bad. They also do treatment plans and ship meds.
If everything is normal there, I’d look into vaginal estrogen.

There are preservatives in suppositories and creams to which you can be allergic.
