I built this as a gift for my best friend who owns 2 manufacturing businesses; mostly machining parts of aluminum. After watching him run CNCs for a number of years I choose a toolset I thought would be useful for not only for everyday tasks but to also run a business, and while inside the shop operating manufacturing machinery… his favorite color is also blue. Pretty proud of this one, outa the few SAKs I’ve built this turned out to be the best one yet.
4 layer, 91mm x 20mm, 3.74oz,
Layer 1:
Reamer/scraper - big blade - corkscrew
Layer 2:
Large metal file
Layer 3:
Scissors - parcel hook
Layer 4:
Bottle opener - package opener - awl
Plus scales:
Pen - pin - eyeglasses bit - toothpick + leatherman flatbit - tweezers + ruler
Accessories:
D-ring - lanyard - miniclip
Haha yea maybe a little redundant but outa the back-tools options the awl is a favorite. For the intent of this build I figured it was more practical than any of the other options.
Good to hear. The idea behind it was essentially burr removal. My buddy has no idea I built this for him, as a seasoned machinist yourself what’re your thoughts on the toolset? Could you see yourself using this, what would you add or take away?
I answered you question in a different comment but did the ask, brother I use that as a scribe and I would love to have the inline style. That’s like game changer level of tool.
I did not realize you could put the awl from the Alox line on non-Alox knives. My dream knife is essentially a pioneer x with the cybertool bit driver and holder, and this makes me realize that this is actually possible, using a cyber tool as a base.
Yea someone else mentioned this in my other post. To be honest, I didn’t realize there was a difference with the reamer. I saw a bunch of other sak models has the reamer in the small blade location and thought it would be perfect for this build. So far so good, theres no play or anything like that, install was seamless. Maybe it’s not “correct” but it seems to work.
I did not. While it is slightly thicker than the pen blade it was still within the same range of all the other tools that share the same footprint, and less than 0.010” thicker than spring overall so I just sent it.
Etsy. There are a few different people that make em that store a leatherman flatbit. Any of them that have a hole in the pick to help add a little torque to the flatbit are cool but I’ve broken most of them. They usually fail right at that little hole so I’d recommend against those versions. I think it’s made from G10 too which is nice cause it’s a little more sturdy than the flimsy plastic pick that comes with every SAK.
Thanks! And no, no modifications. I didn’t even realize the reamer was different until people started asking in the comments. Now that everyone keeps asking I’m getting kinda worried lol but fitment seems fine and assembly was seamless.
This is amazing. One day I'm going to get round to getting hold of the file off a Companion and swapping it with the small blade on my Climber to make my perfect knife.
Very nice. I have one in my little spreadsheet to someday try to piece together that I also named the machinist. I haven't looked at it in a while, but I know one difference in mine is a Phillips. For the same line of work.
See, I thought about the Philips instead of the corkscrew too, I just don’t have too many of them left, with most already slated for other projects. Plus I wanted him to have the little corkscrew screwdriver for safety glasses and such.
We came up with very similar ideas for the "machinist" lol, here's my tool list. Btw, I would still keep the corkscrew, but would want an inline phillips. I don't have one with the box opener? But I may be open to that over the can opener. For all I know, I may not even be able to make this combo work, as I've just started looking into modifying them.
Yea someone else mentioned the Philips magnifier layer. Can def see the utility. The can opener was what I had originally planned for but swapped to the package opener last minute.
I'm honestly not sure the magnifying glass will be more than a novelty though, as they don't hold a candle to the magnifying glass and loupe I use at work.
Hi. Machinist here. Very nice toolset for the trade. I think the only thing missing is a magnifying glass. I use that thing daily for reading tiny print on endmill and insert packages.
Agh ya know the magnifying glass for small engravings is a very good point. Someone mentioned the phillips over the corkscrew but the magnifying glass / phillips layer would solve this.
I actually responded to that person and you made the right call. Calipers have tony screws in the bs k if them for adjusting tension. I don’t use the tiny flathead that goes in the corkscrew daily but it’s probably weekly. A phillips is nice but that tiny screwdriver is a godsend.
Also corkscrew itself is nice for screaming chips out of screw holes. We mainly use torx and hex for inserts and those motherfuckers get packed with chips. Then you out a driver in and…. Well you can guess.
