Contest FLAG FRIDAY - CONNECTICUT. Final hours of voting.
The original idea by u/Canjira was a weekly poll with 15 entries and three available votes - I'm organizing this weeks contest because he needs some personal time. (Our thoughts are with Canjira at this time) This week's vote has 25 quality entries, so now 5 votes are available for gifting towards good designs. (the current flag is shown twice - light and dark versions - the votes for it will be combined.
There were three general entries this week which did not gain at least 10 up-votes. Sorry people. Also not getting in, were a good handful of multi versions of these same designs. (only really need to see the best of them) Just about all the designs here have full descriptions on our sub-reddit. Most are very obvious from just their visuals. Next week we will feature designs for Massachusetts - entries starting from tomorrow. Link for this vote logging website: https://strawpoll.com/kjn1D991eyQ

Mississippi Flag Redesign
Prompt: As you've probably heard, Mississippi is retiring its flag and is in search of a new one. We're putting the contest up a little early this month because we're getting a lot of submissions to the sub, and want to give people the opportunity to submit them to the contest. If you've been here a while, you may recall our July 2015 contest to redesign a state flag with confederate symbolism, which had several Mississippi flags do well that you can look to for inspiration.
We approved 196 entries.
Voting
- Be sure to go through all the submissions, and upvote the flags you like!
- Vote on a good flag, not just a good image.
- This thread is in contest mode, meaning scores are hidden and flags are presented in random order.
- The thread is locked for comments for 2 days. Afterwards, you may comment on the flags, but do not comment on the thread itself.
- Anonymity is key so revealing your flag while the contest is in session will result in a disqualification. After voting is over, anyone may claim their flags and we will announce the top 20 and update the yearly standings.
- Voting will close on the 25th.
Thread went up just a little bit late, voting will still close at the normal time.

Contest Prompt Link
A Flag for a UNESCO Heritage Site
Prompt: Design a flag for any current UNESCO world heritage site that does not have a flag. Sites like Venice and Amsterdam already have flags, and so wouldn't be an option for this contest.
We approved 195 entries from across these categories:
| Counties | Entries |
|---|---|
| Europe | 61 |
| Asia | 43 |
| North America | 36 |
| Oceania | 22 |
| Africa | 14 |
| South America | 14 |
| Other | 5 |
A few special notes for this contest:
- With 1,073 different UNESCO heritage sites, continent was the only meaningful category here.
- Reddit has been acting odd with contest threads with many comments lately, possibly due to the redesign. Some flags may not show up on any given page load, and we've submitted a request to /r/bugs. It's at random, so no flag should be disadvantaged over the course of the contest, but do try to visit more than once so you can see them all, especially as 195 is considerably more entries than we usually get.
- A few people misspelled their name or deleted their account this month, and so their entries are not included. Make sure you spell your name right!
Voting
- Be sure to go through all the submissions, and upvote the flags you like!
- Vote on a good flag, not just a good image.
- This thread is in contest mode, meaning scores are hidden and flags are presented in random order.
- You may comment on the flags, but do not comment on the thread itself.
- Anonymity is key so revealing your flag while the contest is in session will result in a disqualification. After voting is over, anyone may claim their flags and we will announce the top 20 and update the yearly standings.
Schedule
Slightly different schedule this month with the new format, we'll return to the regular schedule in February.
- Submissions are due on the 10th at 11:59 PM ET
- Voting begins shortly after submissions close and ends on the 20th at 11:59 PM ET

Contest October 2025 Flag Design contest - Global Megacity in Liechtensteiner Municipality Style
Prompt: Design a flag for a global megacity in the style of Liechtensteiner Municipality
This month, we’re taking the biggest in the world through the lens of the smallest.
We want you to make a flag for any of the thirty largest cities in the world by population (according to a list found on wikipedia), and make it in the style used by a part of one of the smallest countries in the world.
Specifically one of the following cities:
Bangalore, India — 14,700,000
Bangkok, Thailand — 21,800,000
Beijing, China — 21,500,000
Buenos Aires, Argentina — 16,800,000
Cairo, Egypt — 22,800,000
Chengdu, China — 18,100,000
Delhi, India — 35,700,000
Dhaka, Bangladesh — 23,100,000
Guangzhou, China — 72,700,000
Istanbul, Turkey — 16,000,000
Jakarta, Indonesia — 29,500,000
Johannesburg, South Africa — 14,800,000
Karachi, Pakistan — 21,000,000
Kinshasa, DR Congo — 16,300,000
Kolkata, India — 17,900,000
Lagos, Nigeria — 21,300,000
London, United Kingdom — 15,100,000
Los Angeles, United States — 17,100,000
Manila, Philippines — 27,800,000
Mexico City, Mexico — 25,400,000
Moscow, Russia — 18,800,000
Mumbai, India — 27,600,000
New York City, United States — 21,800,000
Osaka, Japan — 17,700,000
São Paulo, Brazil — 22,600,000
Seoul, South Korea — 25,200,000
Shanghai, China — 41,600,000
Tehran, Iran — 16,800,000
Tokyo, Japan — 41,200,000
Xiamen, China — 15,400,000
And using the style of these kinds of banners
So this style would be a vertical banner, often with a single square element at the top and a longer tail element underneath.
Because this is going to be very different to the normal way we do things, we’ll need you to have a more specific size to the flags.
Please keep your flags between width 500 pixels and height 2500 pixels and width 1000 pixels to height 6000.
Again, thats a pixel ratio of 500 x 2500 to 1000 x 6000 Width x Height.
PLEASE Remember the basics - a maximum of ONLY two submissions per entrant. TWO. No more. You can do two designs for one city, or one design for two cites. NO MORE.
DO NOT show your design ANYWHERE ELSE on the subreddit before the contest is over.
Because this has been asked several times, let’s be clear - you will see all approved entries between 19-27th of October - this is the window in which you can vote on them.
If you want your flag to be included in the ones voted on, click here or on any of the other links immediately below.. We’re making this all as clear as possible.

Flag for a Bird
Prompt: This contest is for the birds! In August, 2011 we asked you to design an animal flag, won by /u/thefrek's pigeon flag. In May, 2015 we asked you to design a flag for a taxon, won by /u/jabask's peacock flag. Both contests were won by birds, so use them as inspiration for this contest, in which you will design a flag for any species of bird. Good luck as you design a flag for a flock, a banner for a bevy, or a pennant for a parliament!

Two special notes on this contest:
- 192 submissions is quite a few more than we normally get! Reddit gets a little odd in contest threads as it approaches 200 entries, please modmail /r/vexillology if you don't see your submissions.
- This was a more specific contest than usual, and we had a lot more rejections than usual for not following the prompt. There were some edge cases that could have been approved or removed. Some were approved, but you are welcome to factor in how well they satisfied the prompt into your voting criterion.
Update: A few flags were removed after the contest started.
Good luck and may the odds be in your favor!

Flag for a Conquered Earth
Prompt: Description: Earth has fallen. After a several millenia long run of innovation, exploration, and fighting each other, we no longer control our destiny. Humanity now serves under the yoke of:
- Subterranean humanoid Martians
- Sentient robot overlords
- An intergalactic federation of insectoids
Humans are largely a curiosity to their new leaders, and are kept alive mainly to harvest their:
- Prowess in agriculture and mining raw goods
- Abundance of cheap entertainment and media
- Utility as affordable off-planet tech support
Being conquered hasn't been all bad though, for the new leaders have brought with them:
- A solution for cancers and hunger
- The end of intra-human conflict
- Free pizza on Tuesdays
In seeking to define its new identity under foreign rule, you are tasked with designing a flag for:
- The Human Resistance, an underground cell to cast off the yoke of tyranny
- The Planetary Emissaries, a group of human leaders that try to negotiate with their new masters as best they can
- The Assimilation Movement, a grassroots effort that loves the new overlords and wants humanity to be a part of them
Treat this like a Mad Libs. In each of these four choices, choose exactly one of three options to get your full prompt. You can use any information from the resulting prompt to help design the flag, but feel no need to use all. While we usually allow flags in the spirit of the contest, there's been demand for a more prescribed contest, so try to stick to these choices. Be creative with your flag descriptions as well!
We approved 108 entries in the following categories:
| Category | Entries |
|---|---|
| Human Resistance | 50 |
| Assimilation Movement | 40 |
| Planetary Emissaries | 18 |
Note: We didn't get to approvals until late this month, so we were a bit lenient on the rule requiring attribution for public domain images. For future contests you must properly attribute if you are using public domain art, and non-public domain art that is not yours is not allowed.

Contest Worldbuilding Contest - R/Vexillology Alternate April 2026 - North America
Worldbuilding Contest - R/Vexillology Alternate April 2026 - North America
In April of 2021, R/Vexillology began a tradition. An alternate history tradition. Every April we focus our flag design contest around alternative history of a specific location.
In April 2021 we focused on Africa, then in April 2022 we moved onto Asia. April 2023 saw us go to Latin America an the Caribbean. April 2024 went to Oceania. Last year, we did Europe.
This year, the Alternate April contest returns to reach North America. Now, we need your nations.
We’re asking you to submit outlines for the information and history of your alternate history nations. Give your nation a name, write out a summary of important details - perhaps including notable history, culture, symbolism etc - the sorts of things that would inspire a potential flag, maybe include a map. Then some of the submitted entries will be the subject of the April 2026 flag design contest!
To submit your entries, click this link
For some helpful hints, the following are samples of successful nations from previous years.
For some basic rules, please keep your nation summaries etc below 1,200 words.
Multiple entries are accepted.
If you want to be successful, and have people making flags for your alternate history country, try not making it super racist/sexist/hyper-colonial etc. We want history changed, not mutilated.
For the purpose of the context, North America is defined as the United States, Canada, and Greenland areas. We’re not including Mexico and Central America as they were covered by the Latin Americas contest from 2023. We won’t rule your country out if it has spillover into the central American/Caribbean regions, but if it’s primarily based on those then there’s a good chance it won’t be accepted.
Do not prescribe the flag itself in the description. The goal is to create a country where others can be inspired to create a flag for it. This will require leeway.
You will need to submit the URLs of your google doc or other document/image sharing system. Please ensure you have set these to enable public access or we will not be able to read it, and your entry will not be selected. We will not be chasing about this. If we can't get in, we won't read it.
To send your entries click here.
Deadline for entries will be Saturday 28th March 2026.
