lol, dude, what, no, russians use this as markings for their military, etc.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z_%28military_symbol%29?wprov=sfla1

"Due to its association with the war in Ukraine, the Z has become a militarist symbol in Russian propaganda and is used by Russian civilians to indicate support for the invasion, further adopted later by Russian far-right organizations"

My real name starts with Z.

When that whole shitshow started, I was actually accused of being a Russian sympathiser simply because my Google profile shows my initial "Z".

And no I didn't change my name. Why the fuck do I have to do so.

u/HCN 23d ago

Whenever I drove through Czechia, I saw many cars with a black "Z" in a red triangle. It made me furious why are there so many supporters of the Russians here. But then I realized, that there must be some other explanation, as Czechs are generally decent people and it's impossible for there to be so many idiots there. I dug a bit and... it turned out that "Z" in a triangle means "Začátečník", a beginner driver xD

12

u/pauliuk 23d ago

(Some of those less decent Czechs, who were not necessarily beginner drivers did however start putting these stickers on their cars post February 2022. For reasons you can probably imagine.)

4

u/HCN 23d ago

rly? What a jerks. On the other hand this sign looks quite aggressive. At least more aggressive than, let's say, green leaf xD

2

u/cronktilten 24d ago

Russia heavily advertises and pushes propaganda in Latin America…

4

u/SubstantialTax1630 24d ago

I'm not saying whether it promotes [the country] or not, but it's obvious that it's not working very well.

Data on "What is your overall perception of Russia?" from 2024

Brazil: positive 17%, negative 56%, neutral 27% Chile: positive 22%, negative 41%, neutral 37% Argentina: positive 21%, negative 39%, neutral 40% Colombia: positive 22%, negative 37%, neutral 41% Venezuela: positive 27%, negative 26%, neutral 47% Mexico: positive 38%, negative 22%, neutral 40% Peru: positive 41%, negative 25%, neutral 34%

The only Latin American country surveyed that has a more positive than neutral opinion is Peru; otherwise, the majority of opinions about Russia are negative or neutral.

Besides, I've never seen any openings for mercenaries to fight for Russia in the war, but in Ukraine, several Brazilians, Mexicans, Argentinians, Colombians, and Chileans have already died as mercenaries for Ukraine.

-4

u/cronktilten 24d ago edited 24d ago

Oh my God, you’re one of these insufferable assholes. Favorability opinions do not represent if people know the meaning of the Z symbol… what do you mean you’ve never seen any openings for Russian mercenaries? They hire all across the world, Colombians Brazilians all over the damn place what are you talking about? Both sides need soldiers so they are willing to pay, it’s not like this is anything new. Don’t act like it’s just one side that’s really dumb because it’s both of them. And there’s really not anything bad about that. A lot of Colombian soldiers need the money and they couldn’t make it back home but Columbia actually recently increased military pay by a lot because they were losing a lot of soldiers who were going to fight for Ukraine or Russia. Obviously more people were going to Ukraine, but don’t act like Russia doesn’t try to recruit people in South America, as well as Africa. I do geolocatons and Ukraine analysis as a hobby, I know my shit more than you thought, spent hours of my life every single day for the entire duration of the war learning as much as I can. I know what I’m talking about.

God, I have not heard of them since 2018...

1

u/Wide-Muffin3349 20d ago

Really? Even though they got into the Parliament in the last elections in autumn?

1

u/werdonokX 20d ago

No seats in parlament bud, the best i found is small influence in regional politics

1

u/Wide-Muffin3349 20d ago

Actually they had some candidates with the Pirates and two Green politicians (Gabriela Svárovská and Irena Ferčíková Konečná) got in! 😁

1

u/werdonokX 20d ago

So you mean two people went to Pirates and Pirates got in the parlament. So they are still irrelevant in grand scheme of things

February 2022 is when Russia invaded Ukraine and the letter Z was used to distinguish vehicles, but it very quickly became a symbol for support of the Russian military

3

u/Dominoe_z 23d ago

And later a symbol that russian far-right parties use.

3

u/Vaveng 23d ago

"Zelení", green in Czech.

But in 2022 since the Russian military vehicles had Z on them, the association with the letter become not the best

2

u/Polytetrafluoro 24d ago

2

u/A7etmed 23d ago

im out of the loop, what are these "unknown reasons" that everyone in the comments seems to know?

3

u/MattC041 23d ago

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z_(military_symbol))

tl;dr "Z" is a Russian military symbol used in the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war.
It became a popular symbol in Russia and its military propaganda. Russian supporters use it to show their support of the war.
Because Czechs are mostly supporting Ukraine, the Green Party presumably changed their flag to avoid association with the Russian Z.

2

u/Rogue_Element_2342 19d ago edited 19d ago

Started out as a tactical marking for russian tanks during invasion, because ukraine uses a lot of the same ex-soviet weaponry that russia does, it was a red team blue team thing for ID. in WW2 they did something similar by painting a white cross over the tops of their vehicles so that the allies could tell Soviet vehicles from German ones when bombing convoys. the Americans do something similar but more hi-tech, they put plates over the sides of their vehicles that show up as a different shade/color under IR/Thermal optics. however thats more for different reasons, as in Ukraine, its largely because you could see a T-80, a BTR, a Ural truck, and it could be either russian or ukrainian, 50/50 chance

but quickly became an ultranationalist icon for russian aggression and imperialism. basically a 21st century swastika for russian ultranationalists, imperialists, and fascists.

its prominetly displayed alongside the ribbons of st george, orange and black stripes, who IIRC is supposed to be like a Russian Orthodox patron of soldiers or something, but its just another symbol that got co-opted into justifying horrible things for propaganda

some people refer to it as a Zwastika. it's used in the same way, its a celebration of violence, murder, imperialism, and sometimes just used as a plain old pride/hate symbol "Im proud of what my country does, and I hate you for being against us"

Some countries in Europe have outright banned the displaying of a militarized Z. some have banned displays of the st george ribbon as well as it's used in tthe same context, the letters O and V were also used as ttactical markings, but Z is the one that is predominatley used as a symbol in propaganda because Z has no actual place in the russian alphabet, its not a letter, its a symbol. the Russian "zh" sound is represented by з a symbol that looks like a 3

In February 2022, I bought a t-shirt from merch made by the city hall of the quarter where I live. It was a big white Ž (the first letter in the name of the quarter). Two fucking days later, the Russians invaded Ukraine.

I wore it only once since then and spend the whole time explaining to others it has nothing to do with the Z Russians used.

Invasion of Ukraine by Russia, and the usage of the Z by Russian troops would be my guess

its not just the use of it by the military, but that the civilian population turned it into a symbol of glorification , celebration, and support of the invasion. they turned it into a hate symbol.

I'd hazard a guess that the reasons are known: the letter Z is used by Russians who support the Russo-Ukrainian War. The Czech Greens didn't want to be tainted by association (even though I suspect the word “green” might begin with a Z in Czech)

This isn’t a political party from an English speaking country, it’s a Czech political party. I know it may be hard to imagine but in the Czech Republic they speak Czech.
The word for green in Czech starts with Z.
