Fictional Flag of the North American Union.
This flag is meant to be a representation of if the U.S. Mexico and Canada made a union similar to the E.U. .
I know it's not the best, and I would genuinely like feedback on how I could improve it.

I, for one, will never live under the domination of the Philadelphia Eagles.

u/SonOfHugh8 Mar 15 '26
That's okay, they are actually under the Dominion of Canada in this flag.

As a Canadian, I think I'd rather the eagles rather than the leafs
Quick question what sport are the eagles?

Have you considered that “go birds” is fun to say? I’m not even a football guy, but I think that that’s a good time.

The stripes on this version appear thinner which i think is better. The shade of blue for the US feels off by a hair. Could just be my screen though.
14
u/CatrpilrQueen Mar 16 '26
The stars should be rotated, so they are standing on two points on the diagonal bar.

What if you do a simplified version of just the eagle, snake, and cactus? Meet halfway
14
u/UrdnotSnarf Mar 15 '26
That’s okay. This sub hates seals on flags for some reason anyway.
11
u/ShowResident2666 Mar 16 '26
Oh, they have a reason—outlined in a (in)famous pamphlet called “Good Flag, Bad Flag” by the North American Vexillological Association (NAVA)—most of them have never actually read it or the much better and more nuanced design manual it’s an executive summary of tho, just parrot it without any of the actual CONTEXT or NUANCE tho.
The pamphlet points out that the ultimate purpose of a flag, as a part of a complete set of symbols for an organization, is quick and immediate identification of a group’s allegiance, especially in bad visibility conditions, and the American state default TO just slapping their—usually very good as seals, but way too complicated to actually recognize—state seals on a blue background is not very good at communicating that. But of course, as the pamphlet they worship ITSELF POINTS OUT, great designs like Mexico’s often violate the simple “rules of thumb” of design manuals like theirs because that’s not what such design manuals are intending to do.
Linus Boman, a professional graphic designer with a youtube channel, has an excellent video on the topic: https://youtu.be/fSzx0k_C6TI?si=OOPU-IcHOABdAv5I

Thank you for pointing this out. People here seem to have a rule following kink and are applying it too broadly

Following this comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/vexillology/s/jEN4Xr4fRn I'm thinking about something like this:
|\/*|
With each star replaced by the Seal of each country.
Make the blue part a triangle, and use the proper seal for Mexico and the "Great Seal" of the US, or at least the eagle from it.
1
u/Void-Cooking_Berserk Mar 16 '26
I think it's fine. Use the actual emblem of Mexico, and use 50 stars for the US. That'll make it look like an organisation of 3 nations. Otherwise it looks like you're creating a new nation.
1
u/this_is_cooling Mar 16 '26
What if you just used the eagle and the snake part of the seal without the stuff underneath?
1
u/Old-Ad-9064 Mar 16 '26
I agree w the guy that said the thinner stripes are better, I also understand not putting the full Mexico emblem but the style of the eagle doesn’t seem right
1
u/impy695 Mar 16 '26
You made the correct decision, but I think there is a better symbol to use for Mexico than either of them.

Just like NATO.

Not bad, but the U.S. might want a different symbol. In the U.S. flag the stars represent the states and the stripes the orignal 13 so that bar kind looks odd and more like the Confederate batttle flag. The bald egle would be a better idea something like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Seal_of_the_United_States
1
u/Void-Cooking_Berserk Mar 16 '26
Oooh, the US Eagle would be great here!
And make the blue part a triangle, so it's something like:
|\/*|
With each star replaced by the Seal of each country.
8
u/ZhouLe Mar 15 '26
Guess I'll just copy my comment from the previous.
A flag all three countries can unite behind in their hate.
In isolation it looks fine. But in execution it feels like it's fundamentally mistreating the symbols of each.

Great idea and strong design, but right now the design elements are too large and are overwhelming each each other reduced the stars the eagle and the Maple leaf icons each by about 15 to 20%
5
u/remkovdm Mar 15 '26
There is no union though. Trump made sure of that.
1
u/Void-Cooking_Berserk Mar 16 '26
Maybe in 50 years, after the US loses its delusions of grandeur, it'll agree to a union of equals with its neighbours.
2
u/hiphoppocampus Mar 15 '26
Would we just not let any of the other North American countries join?

8
u/Salty_Reach4104 Mar 15 '26

They are North American though. Central America is just a region of North America much like Scandinavia or Iberia are regions of Europe

which is part of north america

u/RnotIt Mar 22 '26
It would probably go something like the EU. Take NAFTA and gradually enlarge it politically according to requirements being met.

u/flyPBA Mar 15 '26

1
u/clay-teeth Mar 15 '26
Belize. El Salvador. Costa Rica. Greenland. Panama, etc. Was that a joke or do you not know geography
0
u/flyPBA Mar 15 '26
Oh you’re including Central America as part of North America … I left off Greenland because I always associate that with Denmark
1
u/clay-teeth Mar 15 '26
Im not doing anything, its a fact. Central America is north america. North America is a continent. Central America is a sociological concept.
5
u/ZhouLe Mar 15 '26
North America is a continent. Central America is a sociological concept.
Not siding with the other person, but both are social constructs. There isn't really a good, unambiguous definition of a continent.
1
u/RnotIt Mar 22 '26
North America has a tectonic plate that stops in Panama, but it also goes into E. Asia, so yeah.
1
u/ZhouLe Mar 22 '26
The North American plate cuts Guatemala in half in its border with the Caribbean plate. Panama sits on its own plate with most of Costa Rica.
1
u/clay-teeth Mar 15 '26
You're right. We can at least agree they're the same landmass not separated by an ocean
3
1
u/ZhouLe Mar 15 '26
Agreed, but they also do not necessarily overlap.
2
u/clay-teeth Mar 15 '26
What do you mean
1
u/ZhouLe Mar 15 '26
If you view America as a single continent; north, central, and south America can be separate entities without overlap. They share the same landmass but are not individually the same landmass.
→ More replies (0)2
u/hiphoppocampus Mar 17 '26
Also, the Caribbean is North America. So Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas etc are all North America.
2
u/flyPBA Mar 15 '26
I was basing my question on the social/political definition since the thread is about a flag which is social/political.
2
u/clay-teeth Mar 15 '26
Socially and politically central america is also in north america. There's no instance of north america that excludes greenland and central america. Economically and politically, the group of 3 are sometimes called "USMCA", but normally they'd just be named separately
2
u/bohuiginn Mar 15 '26
I like this. Solid design. Very representative, easy to read, relatively easy to draw. Top marks from me.
2
u/JohnCanadian_ Mar 16 '26
I do like it as a Canadian, nicely done. Though I would prefer a red maple leaf on a white background. Curious to see what this would look like also with the white diagonals switched to red.

u/KittyKittyowo Mar 16 '26
Like I understand the stripe but does it have to be diagonal? It reminds me of the Confederacy Edit: the US part that's a TON of room
5
u/ChameleonCoder117 Mar 15 '26
United states of North America.
Also, then the name would actually be pronouncable(USAN)
The demonym for the people would be North Americans, or Usanians.
6
u/vonhoother Mar 15 '26
Independent Nation States of America's Northern Extremity might be just as apt.
1
u/Salty_Reach4104 Mar 15 '26

As a mexican I found this Insulting. You are using the "made in Mexico" logo when the mexican flag have a lot of deep symbolism

Could also go with the Pemex (Petróleos Mexicanos) logo.

NEMA (Northern Eagle Military Alliance) from Palladium’s Chaos Earth setting.
1
u/First-Ad-7960 Mar 15 '26
I like the concept. Suitable for a Clive Cussler novel (see: Night Probe). The symbolism for Mexico needs to draw more from the actual flag but I take your point about how busy the full seal would be.
