Sperm flag :D
Second one is really cool though
163
u/GroundbreakingTwo213 Mar 12 '26
Yeah, 2nd one looks cool, it reminds me of the Philippine flag, but with the Philippine revolutionary flag's sun
22
u/random_nohbdy Mar 12 '26
The second one reminds me of Donetsk Oblast’s flag, minus the sunrise’s reflection on the water.

The symbol on the first flag look like sperm
74
u/MephistoTheDwarf Mar 12 '26
My first thought was the souls from Soul Eater, but my second one was sperm.
37
u/Portlander Mar 12 '26
The first flag looks like sperm and the second looks like the egg. If these two nations merge it'll be the birth of a new civilization.

Dude, they would come off like sperm to most people imo. Blood and water droplets are almost never visualized with what look like flagella.

u/LowDownBear Mar 12 '26
See, this is the issue. You post something that I think genuinely looks cool, but when people point out that it kind of looks like sperm, instead of just saying, “Oh dang, I didn’t even think of that,” your immediate response is to get defensive and strike out.

Maybe the fact that everyone is talking about it should tell you something. It looks like sperm. And what context? The colors? Plenty of flags have symbols whose color does not reflect what it looks like in the real world. For all I know your fictional world is the mythical land of Vas Deferns.
20
u/catharticargument Mar 12 '26
Not taking criticism very well here. Water and blood droplets almost never have twisty tails like what you have depicted. I’ve shown this to a couple people now to make sure I’m not crazy and all have said “is it supposed to be sperm?”

u/nou-772 Mar 12 '26
My first thought was that it's an Asian flag (Tibet or smth) with some stylized fire, but on second thought it does look like sperm
43
u/One_Win_6185 Mar 12 '26
You gave them a tail. The droplets idea is neat but maybe make them more tear drop shaped and less sperm shaped.
18
31
u/RegularEmployee1038 Mar 12 '26
Dude you gave your 'drops' squiggly tails. Drops don't squiggle.. Sperm squiggle This isn't on us being weird. Trust me you players on gonna see that flag and think sperm.
12
u/montezuma300 Mar 12 '26
Droplets do not look like that. They don't abruptly pinch off into a little tail. In reality they're spheres but the symbol at least is basically a circle with a point on one side.
Also, color doesn't matter. If you put the outline of a skull and make it purple, it still looks like a skull. If you draw the outline of a sun and make it green, it still looks like a sun. If you draw the outline of a sperm and make it red or blue, it still looks like sperm.

u/Alone_Gur9036 Mar 12 '26
Drops of water and blood don’t have squiggly tails, they’d be the same shape as a teardrop - the universally recognised shape of falling liquid
2
2
u/Careful_Echo_2326 Mar 12 '26
Drops of water doesn’t have a little wiggly tail at the end of it…the image strongly conjured that of sperm
2
u/jdhutch80 Mar 12 '26
There are lots of symbols on flags or heraldry that are not the literal color of the real life object. If you want it to represent blood or water, make it more of a teardrop shape than a head with a tail. A circle with a distinct wavy line coming off of it is going to look like sperms or tadpoles to most adults. A circle that tapers to a point will look more like a drop of water or blood.
2
u/victornielsendane Mar 12 '26
Drops of water and blood usually don’t have squiggly little swim fins

It’s wild that middle age folks running around with sperm banners unironically simply because the microscope had not been invented to see them yet.

Maybe, but the guy with six gouttes argent on his banner knew what he was doing.

20
u/Bang237 Mar 12 '26
I would personally recommend changing them to #4 to prevent looking like sperm while still keeping your intended effect.
11
u/jdhutch80 Mar 12 '26
None of the gouttes you linked to look as much like sperms as the OP's flag. Luckily, for him, he didn't read the Wiki that says water is depict as silver/white or it would really look like sperm.
2
u/XVince162 Mar 12 '26
Why are 9 and 10 banned now?
2
u/Condottiero_Magno Mar 13 '26
The second link is from an unofficial Society for Creative Anachronism site, so 9 and 10 aren't registrable, according to the SCA's College of Arms in the March 2013 cover letter.

u/ImOnlyHereForTheCoC Mar 13 '26
Please tell me that’s pronounced like “booty” but with a goo- instead of a boo-
1
u/Condottiero_Magno Mar 13 '26
Unless there's an accent, it should be pronounced as "goot". Depending on the context, goutte is French for gout.
319
u/Dry-Organization-426 Mar 12 '26
Maybe unstylize the droplets ??
123
u/Meroxes Mar 12 '26
I've honestly never seen liquid droplets either look that way IRL or be stylized like that.

"Droplets"? I saw them and instantly thought "Why is OP decorating a flag with multicoloured sperms?" xD

I’ve seen them I heraldry but are more rain drop shaped thought they can be squiggly
14
u/nome_ann Mar 12 '26
This is the main way droplets tended to look in medeval heraldry.
5
u/Dry-Organization-426 Mar 12 '26
guttée de sang and guttée de larmes I am aware can also a be smoothed sided. Yes that is historical, but it has a different visual context now a days

As this is true for that time in history, its not true now and anyone looking at this is going to say wierd looking sperms flag. A lot has to do worh the number of droplets too, 2 to 3 might be drops many of them looks like sperm

u/jeffykins Jamaica Mar 12 '26
I know you're defending yourself in another comment and I'm not here to be a dickhead, but droplets arent typically depicted this way. Perhaps some culture does/has but I mean, liquids form tight droplets in our gravity.
Unless they're not meant to be free-falling droplets but more flowing/dripping off a surface?
Idk man! Help me help you
95
u/flyinggazelletg Chicago Mar 12 '26 edited Mar 12 '26
The way the droplets are designed is based on a heraldic symbol called a Goutte. They happen to often appear like sperm. I’m actually down with OP keeping it as is.
131
u/HugeEgoHugerCock Mar 12 '26
OP should definitely keep it, but also admit that it looks like sperm lol

u/jeffykins Jamaica Mar 12 '26
My man with the info, thank you. I knew it couldn't have been something so random they just came up with. Oh, internet.
10
u/Pollomonteros Mar 12 '26
After looking at the pictures in Wikipedia, I could see that, problem is OP made the tail part of the drop too thin so it ends up looking like flagella

In case there are history buffs in your audience, in period the gouty (droplets) flag would have had an even distribution/number of each color.

ITT: a lot of people who think cartoon pictures of sperm are more relevant to a medieval worldbuilding idea than medieval style depictions of droplets.

I love seeing OP argue with people about their opinions on the flag. Don't post about your flag on the internet if you don't want to hear people talk about how it looks like jizz. NSFW tag plz.
4
u/Eleve-Elrendelt Brittany Mar 12 '26
Urgh, this IS the heraldical guttée, or droplet. There are coats of arms that incorporate it. The fact that we now know how sperm looks due to microscopes ruined this figure - kind of cool if you ask me - permanently. I love the first flag and while I'd reccomend changing the shape to some other stylised droplets if it was to be represented graphically in a movie or as an illustration (just judging by how crazy people went over it), it's perfectly fine for its purposes, and IS accurate in terms of incorporating medieval design.

I can imagine the first one trying to invade a much bigger entity with lots and lots of soldiers, but when one soldier penetrates the bigger entity then the bigger entity becomes solid and cannot be penetrated anymore.
Also, the soldiers live in a Cylinder.

u/RiseOfPiratron Mar 13 '26
First flag fits a medieval setting very well. Second flag is cool but too modern

The first one reminds me of Super Mario, specifically the climbing Koopa level. I'm not sure why, but maybe it's the colors (the shapes are really cool too, gives me some vibes of those ghosts in Super Mario lol)

Why are all the sperm traveling south? This is more a passport bro flag than anything 😂

u/CapGullible8403 Mar 13 '26
Good stuff. My suggestions:
I feel like the sperm should be swimming upwards, it's more optimistic that way. This way around, they seem bottom heavy.
Switch the black and white around. Yellow on white just ain't right.

I think they both look fantastic! :o
The droplets don't look like sperm cells to me. But if you want to avoid people thinking that, maybe you could thicken the stems of the tails slightly.

Second flag is great!
First flag looks like some weird sperm based RTS flash game you’d find on a website that claimed to be like Cool Math Games.
0
u/SwissForeignPolicy Mar 13 '26
Both are kind of gaudy, but in like an endeading way. I would consider using a more saturated shade of yellow for the first one, to contrast better with the red, although that might mess with the vibes a little. I would defnitely change the proportions of the second one so the horizon is centered (also, your sun would look better if it were slightly lower wrt the horizon [also also, the wavy sunbeams would look better if they were symmetrical, rather than all pointing the same way]).
