Identify What’s this flag I saw at yesterday’s No Kings Day protest in DC?

u/BigEasyh Oct 19 '25
To add more context, the Straw Hat Pirate Flag from the anime One Piece has been used as a protest symbol in several south east Asian nations

Listen up… You can pour drinks on me, you can throw food at me… You can even spit on me. I’ll just laugh that stuff off. But… Good reason or not… Nobody hurts a friend of mine!

It's an honor to be this person today.
This flag is from a popular anime called "one piece" the protagonists, led by a man with that hat, fly it everywhere
The main philosophy of the pirates, and the show at large, is fairly revolutionary (going to war with the world because their friend is sad being a prime example)

u/The-Great-Calvino Oct 19 '25
I don’t want to conquer anything, I just want to be the strongest pirate !
22
u/ElghinnOG Oct 19 '25
No Luffy wants to be the King of Pirates!!! 😁
Power n fame mean nothing to Luffy it's just about doing the right thing.
3
Oct 19 '25
He wants to be completely free and for every one in the world to be free with a full belly. I am so glad this flag is showing up.
10
u/Patriot009 Oct 19 '25
Right thing? Luffy just wants to be free and be strong enough to protect his friends. He's no hero. He's a pirate. Heroes have to share their meat with other people at feasts. Luffy wants all the meat.
4
u/Downtown_Degree3540 Oct 19 '25
Patriot is right you know.
A hero is someone who will share his own sake with someone. But they want to drink it all themselves!
2
u/ClassicHando Oct 24 '25
Luffy won't fight for you unless youre willing to fight for yourself. But once you are willing, hes very ride or die. he doesnt care about the right thing, just freedom for himself and those who want it.
"Im no hero! When a hero has meat he has to share his meat. I want all the meat!" -Luffy
10
u/Downtown_Degree3540 Oct 19 '25
Pretty sure the quote is
“What, I don’t want to rule anything. Being King of the pirates is about being more free than anyone.”
3
u/nickcan Oct 20 '25
Well, if you want to be pedantic about it, the actual quote is: "この世で一番自由な男が海賊王だ!"
But the meaning in English is as you you said. It's about being the most free.
3
u/The-Great-Calvino Oct 20 '25
I defer to your wisdom, I am just a casual fan of the Straw Hat Pirates
4
u/lolslim Oct 20 '25
I dont want to be a hero, you know what a hero is? Lets ay you have a hunk of meat, heroes will share that chunk of meat, I wwant all the meat for myself.
Which thats huge paraphrasing but I think I still made my point.

Worth pointing out that Monkey D Luffy has declared war on the authoritarian World Government, punched several oligarchs in the face, freed slaves and imprisoned people, supports the queer community, and consistently fights for food security.
He is also a goofy goober, and we love him.

People have already answered what it is but I have a small fun fact of how it (as I observed it) the flag became popular because of awful graphic design in Indonesia.
Indonesia had their 80th anniversary last August. And revealed this as the logo. People thought it was so ugly they turned it sideways as form of mockery.
People then just began to use it in a one piece style. And then finally just straight up using the one piece flag all together.
PS: Links work but the websites are a bit shit, sorry. Couldn’t find better atm.
3
u/Kosaki_MacTavish Oct 20 '25
Pretty much that's what happened. The 80th anniversary logo is so rushed

As a fan of one piece since the early 00s, even part of my username, and my dog is named Luffy, I'm absolutely stoked that it's taken on this connotation globally after the Nepalese revolution.
The straw hats regularly topple monarchies, scummy hyper wealthy extravagant slavers & world nobles, & the corrupt police establishment of the navy haha. Shooting the WG flag at enies lobby is a pivotal moment. They're cool with fishmen, Okama, & may not be in the revolutionary army but align with Dragons goals, absolutely the antithesis of authoritarian racially charged rhetoric. I'm sure Oda would approve.

u/kittehmummy Oct 19 '25
Warfronts YouTube channel did a video about this recently. Or. If you want to search, it's "How One Piece is Shaping a Generation of Protests"

u/Morgainfly Oct 19 '25
Funny how right wingers constantly yell to stop politicizing One Piece when One Piece is literally the most political anime next to Code Geass.

The way they've been misapporpriating Lord of the Rings jargon into their evil corporations (e.g. Palantir), they're not in a position to talk.

Hello takethemoment13,
Check out our frequently asked flags page! Your request might be there.
When asking for a flag to be identified, please provide context when possible, including:
Where the flag was found (without compromising privacy)
When the flag was found, or the date of the material containing the flag
Who might own the flag (a general description is fine)
These details help users narrow down their search and make flag identification easier.

Wealth, fame, power, gold roger gained this and all else the world had to offer. With his dying words he revealed that he hid all his treasure in one place, in one piece. Thus began the great pirate era.

Atraw Hat pirate flag form the Anime One Piece.
The main theme of this anime is that the government is the bad guy. Aligning with the Staw Hats means aligning against fascism.

It’s always amazing to me how symbols from One Piece now have meaning in our world - beyond “Straw Hat Pirates.” I truly believe that it will be held in a similar regard to “The Odyssey” in the future.

Most people are forgetting to mention the key plot point of the show that serves as a parallel to these revolutions happening across the world. In the show, the Strawhat Pirate crew and their allies fight against the WORLD GOVERNMENT who is made up of oligarchic despots who oppress the people of the world.

It’s from the anime one piece. It’s the flag of the protagonist crew. Luffy’s whole deal is pursuit of his dreams and standing up against impossible odds for his friends and for what is right. Straw hats mean the same thing. 🙂

straw hat pirates from one piece, the iconic ensign of the protagonist's (very oddly benevolent and caring) pirate crew. the hat on the skull also represents the protagonist's similar headwear.

It's the Straw Hat Pirates' Jolly Roger, a pirate flag from the One Piece manga series flown by a group who fights for the oppressed. It's recently gained popularity in pro-democracy protests IRL, including in Indonesia, Nepal, Madagascar, the US, and more.
