This is an incredible design. Something we studied in school

Looks a bit dodgy in black and white print though no? It is very swastika-ey.

Same. It ushered in a great set of Commonwealth Games logos: Edmonton and Brisbane (and Victoria).

Woah! I have shirt with this on it that I picked up in the Auckland airport. I thought it was just a clever "NZ" logo that evoked the Union Jack. No idea it was the logo for a Commonwealth games.

New Jack Zealand
Four blue triangles, edged by white, on a red field. A deconstructed Union Jack, representing NZ.

Which as the OP said represent Aotearoa. The reason is top secret —par with unearthed Viking longboats the kiwi government keeps in a secret bunkers guarded by earthquake causing weather satellites. That's why you don't see triangle shaped pounamu (jade pendants) —banned! My theory is that when Māui fished up the North Island He secretly used a triangle not his grandmother's jawbone, because physics.

This would make for a good brand logo. Maybe for knock-off Reeboks?

Like those “British Knights” shoes from the 1980s? These’d be Kiwi Kicks or something.

Reminds me of the N7 logo from Mass Effect, which means we could retcon Commander Shepard to being a Kiwi.

It looks like a flag a cartoon super villain would fly.
Or maybe the Zombies from Plants vs Zombies.
Edit: New PvZ theory, the zombies originated from New Zealand, for the funnies.

Can we have a fictional tag for posts like this?
I've been looking on my map for New Zealand for the past hour and it's Just not a real country!

Only thing that would make it better is having "ew ealand" in a tiny lower case font besides rach letter

You can even hang it sideways and it still says NZ, wouldn't approve, appreciate the effort

Something about this design is strikingly familiar from decades ago. I can't put my finger on it, but I think it's from my childhood in the 70s.
Maybe an airline bag? AirNZ perhaps? A bank? The feeling is so very strong. It was a physical object that I owned made of soft plastic or vinyl.
This is driving me nuts!
Edit: It was the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games flag. Thank you to u/FeteFatale!

But seriously, why does New Zeland still have its colonial era Union Jack flag, when it hasn’t been a de facto British possession since 1947?

Brb designing new flag with AUS written in same style. Not the first or last time we're going to steal your flag.

u/Karfiyeet Oct 06 '25
so stupid that it wraps around to being kinda totally awesome. best part is you can rotate it and hang it vertically and it still reads

if the British flag was not the British flag and actually made by someone redesigning the British flag for a Reddit sub known as r/vexillology:

If NZ changes it's flag to anything other then the Kiwi, I will commit acts of violence so deplorable the Hague courts would give all 5 guards live ammo
2
u/GrassyKnoll95 Oct 06 '25
Turns out you can do worse than just putting the Union Jack in the corner

I don't care for it as a flag, but as a logo for something of Kiwi origin, it's awesome.

A flag to replace reference to the Union Jack but it's only explainable by referencing the Union Jack lol. This is the logical flaw that anyone who thinks it seriously is a good idea is overlooking.

u/Resident_Attitude283 Oct 12 '25
If you look at it for a long time and then close your eyes, the colours are inverted. 🙂

u/No_Lead8765 Oct 30 '25
i nteresting take. I like that it keeps some connection to the original while trying something new. The color contrast works, but the layout could be simplified a bit—flags read better at a glance. Overall, it’s a solid redesign that feels plausible."

Why have a flag for a country when you can have a half-assed corporate logo?
0
u/Valuable-Garage-4325 Oct 09 '25
Wrong shape for a national flag. Looks like a corporate logo.

LOL, this is a 1:2 rectangle... what shape do you think commonwealth national flags are supposed to be, octagons?
