Question ❓ Outsider-ish; is the theatre experience going to be bad?

Ahoy! So I will be taking my daughter to see The Last Act in theatre this weekend and was wondering about what to expect/mitigate for. I also enjoy the show a lot for what it’s worth to this conversation.

Am I in for an experience like if I took her to a My Hero Academia event or a YuGiOh tournament? Or are the opinions I’ve heard of the fandom overblown? Obviously most of what I heard is stuff about FunnyBunny shippers and such. We’re going either way, just need to know what to plan for or not plan for mentally haha

It's all overblown. Everyone on Reddit thinks every online fandom is full of cringe weirdos that are gonna scream at the top of their lungs every time there's a plot twist, sing along (loudly) with every song, and never shower or wear deodorant.

Go to a half decent theater that assigns seats, most of them will happily throw out anybody that tries to be disruptive.

Thats not true. Just because a crowd reacts doesnt mean the theatre isnt half decent. There’s more than amazing theaters out there and people STILL ruin the experience- and it is NOT over blown if minecraft movie, mario movie and fnaf are anything to go by.
Expect weirdos, disrespectful people and over the top people in ANY movie like this. Youd be stupid to go unprepared just because you think you and your theatre are too good for that

Iron Lung was made by one of the most memed Youtubers on the platform and yet had no disruptive trends tied to it.

None of the Sonic films got particularly crazy aside from designated fan nights with late night showings. Same with FNAF.

I think it will be more like a Star Wars premiere- some costumes, some lightsabers, mostly just an excited group of people ready to see a movie!

Great comparison since I’ve been to those myself haha thanks!

I don't think it's going to be as bad as people say. Outside of reddit, every fan of TADC, or Glitch in general, has been very kind. I went to the pop up store in NYC and it was a really nice experience. If fans can be not just civil, but kind to each other, in a cramped little store off of Canal Street I see no reason they can't be civil at the movies.

That’s great to hear, thanks!

What you heard is overblown. It's going to be fun!

A lot of the "negative theater experience" predictions from the fandom are overblown.

You'll probably see a few people in cosplay and maybe some people attempting to sing along to Caine's Episode 8 song but otherwise it should be fairly standard theater etiquette.

This is nothing like a Yu-Gi-Oh or other TCG tournament. It won't be that chaotic.

this ^ if you’re in a bigger city i think there would be a higher chance of troublemakers

Tbh the theaters will be full of people who have money or know others who have money. Expect cosplays and the like, but I'd doubt it'll be another Minecraft Movie

Exactly what I needed to know actually. Great comparison thanks!

There were a lot of leaks of the movie online, so thousands of people got spoiled and cancelled their tickets. I don’t think it’s going to be as big of an event as expected because of this honestly :(( But fortunately, with that, I think a lot of the people that I was worried would cause trouble have cancelled their tickets and I think it’ll be a much better experience than if the movie never got leaked to be completely honest with you.

edit: i didn’t read that you enjoy the show, so you probably already know about the leaks 🤦‍♀️ My point still stands though, I’m on tadc twitter very often and after the leaks the twitter fandom shrunk significantly and most of the problematic people have dropped off the face of the earth lol. It seems that a lot of people that caused most of the problems hated the ending so they just left. So that leaves all the people that actually enjoy the show!

And I also want to say a lot of digital circus fans in real life are a lot kinder and more respectful than fans online, and I overall think it will be a pleasant experience for you and your daughter.

That’s good to hear! We’re excited more to be out and experience it together so the big spectacle being lost sucks but isn’t a deal breaker. This thread and your comment are a good boost to know it’ll just be cool people that like the show! Thank you

I'm not sure because the same movie at different times a day can have different vibes. I feel like the worst you could expect is a theater of over rambunctious kids, maybe similar to a Five Nights at Freddies crowd? I went to a different movie on the opening night of FNAF and kids opened the door to my movie and yelled 6 7 twice. It was annoying, but harmless.

I don't think we will know. Some people might cosplay. I might face makeup myself to the moon.

If you are asking about the show itself, it consists of episode 8, which is the scariest, most terrifying episode of the entire series and even when I would rewatch it, typically from react content creators who gave commentary, I was not ready for it for 2 months after I had watched it because it's so intense. That's why it's rated PG-13. It includes a mental breakdown of an AI who either commits complex suicide or starts to abuse the cast believing he's worthless and broken and has a climax where he begins to try to prove something to the humans who don't understand him with individualized torture as an example of how they are wrong right before being accidently killed https://youtu.be/DMNlzf8PiEM?t=1686

Oh, we’ve watched the whole series together so far! So in terms of show content we’ve got passed that at least. Cosplay is super cool, she’d be jazzed if everyone was dressed up! Haha

If everyone is just having fun and dressed up that’s great. I had just heard some less than great things about the fandom from more chronically online individuals that have been a fan of the show longer than me and didnt want to believe it for face value honestly.

fucking hell, i cannot figure out how to spoiler tag okay deleted that last post. please just dm me if you can because there are some spoilers I have that you, as a parent, might want to know because they might cause Big Feelings in a younger child, esp if they're a jax or funnybunny fan and this is their first time being really invested in a fandom.

I would dm you but reddit's fucking moved things around again on old.reddit so can't figure out how

Ep9 is heavy and bleak, your kid's gonna get depressed

Caine fans are already there 👍Still in it to see the Final Act

I feel like this description of the episode makes it seem way worse than it actually is. Like yes, pretty much all of this happens but it's so easy to detach from cartoon violence that I don't feel like it was traumatizing or even scary, not even for an average child. The worst ever scene is Jax having his skin peeled off, the rest is pretty mild. No idea what OP's daughter's age is so it's hard to predict whether the movie will be suited for her. We can only assume it will be a little worse than episode 8. Honestly, from my experience as a kid, it's mostly how the characters feel that can affect the viewer rather than physical violence. If a character is treated wrong, framed, bullied or in the wrost case dies (especially if they're the viewer's favorite), that's when it really hurts. Kids have empathy and can relate in some degree to certain situations but most of people are lucky to have never experienced certain types of physical pain so we can't fully understand how much being shredded or electrocuted hurts.

I doubt the child on a single watch of a fast paced show/movie will fully comprehend what's happening. A kid will not "oh no, X is having a mental breakdown and will abstract!", "they'll just think "Oh no, he's angry!".

I think if the show/movie is PG13 then there's nothing to really worry about.

Honestly I saw more gruesome things in your average Looney Tunes short than Episode 8.

Plenty of pulverizations and body alterations into weird shapes lol

1

u/seedlessincanada 5h ago

Agreed. My main concern before watching the series all together was the existentialism and mental aspect was going to be the worst part. So I kind of explained that it leaned heavily on those topics (in more kid friendly ELI5 ways) first since she had only seen some YouTube clips and songs and heard from friends about it. We got through it all pretty easily. Obviously no clue if EP 9 gets wayyyy darker than the rest of the series but if it stays status quo or close it’ll be alright.

But other than that, it was a fun episode! /s

I seriously think episode 3 was scarier, but that's my personal opinion.

We'll see

Personally, I'm a pessimitic, so I think there will be a lot of loud children, people eating popcorn and screaming when a big reveal arrives and others on their phones and such

That way, IF it was a disaster, I don't lose much, I already knew it would be. IF I have a pleasant experience, I will be pleasantly surprised
