Penguins actually build lil nests out of rocks. One researcher actually referred to them as castles! A male and female penguin usually bond and make a nest together. Lonely male penguins without a mate are usually left collecting massive piles of rocks. Sometimes a partnered penguin will go over to them and begin a courtship and mate. The male penguin is usually bad at this and misses their load. But then allows the other penguin to grab a pebble and waddle off. She can’t just take a rock. They have to have relations first usually.

It’s a very interesting way of courting and an even sad version that there are penguins who collect endlessly because they have no sex
