NAS hardware Help With Hard Drives

I recently bought a DS925 to backup my google workspace environment. I started with 1 8TB hd. I recently added a second 8TB hd and made the mistake of adding it to the same storage pool/volume so rather than adding storage it became mirrored to the first drive. I googled for a solution and ending up following instructions to deactivate the 2nd drive, physically eject it, put it back in and then create Volume 2/Storage Pool 2. This part worked but now my Volume is listed as degraded and it is listing the incorrect storage space. It thinks it has 36.4 GB available on an 8GB HD.

What is the best way to clean this up so that I can access all 16TB of storage.

u/gadget-freak Have you made a backup of your NAS? Raid is not a backup. 15h ago

You could copy everything over to volume 2 (don’t forget the applications need to be moved too), then destroy pool1/volume 1 and create it again.

You will end up with 2 x 8TB volumes and need to spread your data between them.

I would strongly advise against going for raid 0 as it has double the failure rate of a single drive. You don’t want to loose your backup at the moment you try to restore it.
